been 5 hours now! sighsssss......guess it wont be today....and this center is only an hour away. No idea where its heading

Odds are the USPS. Mine did show up today - but tracking would indicate that it shouldn't have. You can go nuts trying to figure it out. Just breath, in, out, in, out. Now keep that up and you should be OK.

I received mine yesterday and I've been playing around with it. Charged it, bypassed the setup screen, then restarted to install the Ermine update and in about 5 minutes I was on 2.2. Seems to work well enough at browsing most websites, the e-reader side is surprisingly very functional and integrated decently with the other applications on the device (being able to send websites to the e-reader is a nice touch). The PDF reader works pretty nicely as well, at the PDF reflow option under the menu makes almost any PDF books perfectly readable.

But I have to admit, it's not quite up to what I was hoping for. For one, it seems to have no real GPU acceleration at all...even simple fading and menus feel sluggish, Angry Birds is pretty much unplayable at about 5FPS, and most other games either won't install or just hang at a black screen when launching (admittedly I understand the device wasn't really targetted at people that play games). Even video playback is sluggish, with an 800x480 DivX/MP3 video skipping and chopping constantly. Is there a problem with my device, or is that really how it's supposed to be?

Otherwise, for what it is, it's not a bad. I love that it has a full sized USB port to hook in flash drives/keyboards, and the scroll pad on the right side is a pretty awesome addition that makes web browsing and document viewing a breeze (why don't more tablets have that?). Worth the price, in any case...although I was surprised at how heavy and bulky it feels.

Also, does anyone know how to get Flash onto the device? Froyo is supposed to support it, but I see no way to really install it (hopefully it can work with full Flash and not just Flash Lite). For that matter, where can you get an updated Youtube app for it? I have a 2.2 android phone if that will be of any help (any way to transfer apps from it to the eDGe without rooting it?)

It seems that everyone in this community got a good PE, only mine doesn't work even for a little! It's frustrating.

Here in NYC, mine arrived today despite a delivery date of September 19. Pleasantly surprised to say the least... and to say the most, I am ecstatic! Charging now. Curious to see how the configuration/update will progress. From appearance alone, it is a solid and well formed device. The black outer encasing isn't a filled black but a glossy speckled finish (likely a finger print magnet, but seemingly an easy wiper with a cloth). The inside is more a chrome-like grey... form factor is appealing... does not feel like a plastic square, pleasing corners and the access buttons are, well, nicely accessible. I approve so far... we'll have to see of course how it runs, some of us don't seem to be fairing too well in that regard, but it may just be a matter of careful review and instruction from the very informative posts here in the forum... we should all feel fortunate for this community! Thank you all who have contributed!

You might try one thing more. Do a reset. There is a small hole next to the USB connector. Use a toothpick or something like that and depress the switch inside(reset most likely works only when powered up). I'm not sure if the reset does anything more then a power cycle does, but its worth a try. If it works you're that much ahead of the game.

I got mine today and, so far, I like it. I couldn't wait until it fully charged to try it out. I hope I didn't hurt my battery life too much with my impatience. Anyway, I tried it before upgrading to Android 2.2 and all the other posters are right. It's much better after the update. Maybe it's just my imagination, but even the e-ink side seemed more responsive. I tried the journal and the cute little frozen balls game before I turned it off to finish charging. Once it's charged and I setup the wi-fi connection I think I'll like it even more. :-)

For those of you are really interested in how SmartPost works, I found a write up over on the Bag o Crap discussion(Post ID: 4633324). It was written about a Bag o Crap, but it should apply to most any order. There are some specific things related to Bags o Crap, just skip those parts. It is quite detailed.

Check this previous post. I assume you're trying to do the registration during setup. The URL in your PE points to a site that is no longer active. It was up for some time after they went out of business but it shut down a few weeks ago.

You should also check out Mobile Read. The community over there is supporting the EE and PE. Registration is free.

OK, I'm using the PE now. Not as happy anymore.

My first question is these were supposed to be new, right? I thought it was weird that the box wasn't sealed and then when I looked at the screen protector on the tablet side it looked like someone had been drawing circles in it. Was this how everyone else's was? The open box, I mean?

Anyway, now it's charged and I'm using the browser. It keeps crashing randomly. I also can't get any videos to work whether on the tube app or the browser. It just says failed to load video. The k9 app wont load my email either. Am I doing something wrong? Any suggestions?

I just got my Pocket edge, did the 'click the four corners' registration bypass, and have been playing around with it. I think the e-ink touch side is broken, unless I misunderstand. When I click the 'journal' icon, it pulls up a sheet of lined paper on the e-ink side, but no matter where I draw on the page, it just makes a vertical line on the far right edge of the display.

Am I misunderstanding something, or do I have a defective unit? Who should I call to deal with this, woot customer service? Would upgrading the firmware either void my warranty or solve my problem?

Mine arrived in Milwaukee before 11am. FedEx site still said it had arrived at the local postal facility at 7am so I didn't expect it today. Charged and was looking to start the upgrade (still have to download) and realized I have no idea where that microSD card I supposedly have around here got to, so I have to re-read install instructions for the upgrades. I think I saw somewhere that you can connect directly to the pc instead of using the microSD card.

Try going under settings>display>reader screen calibrator and going through those steps.

Can you explain how you did the 'click on 4 corners bypass'?

kennube

quality posts: 0 Private Messages kennube

I have tried to do the press-four-corners procedure about 100 time so far, with no success.

There does not appear to be a problem with the touchscreen, as it works perfectly normally (up to stage 6) except for this four-corner thing.

I have watched the linked video many times. I have looked at the linked image. As far as I can tell, I am pressing in the right areas.

(I no longer get the Welcome screen after the first powerup, but I have been trying this on the connect-to-wifi screen instead.)

I have tried with the stylus and with my fingertip. I have tried pressing lightly and pressing hard enough to see little swirly designs on the screen.

I fear my next implement will be a hammer.

One question: if the four-corner attempt fails, do I need to power off and back on again before trying again? Or can I just keep poking at the corners over and over and over without power cycling?

kennube

quality posts: 0 Private Messages kennube

And as soon as I posted that, the next attempt worked!

To anyone else having difficulties, be sure to post your failure here. Only then will you succeed.

I received my Pocket Edge today and it will not let me register it. It's the same network connection issue mentioned in other posts. I called the 866# reported to be the customer support for this product at a now defunct manufacturer and the number doesn't work. I can bypass the registration but would really like to be able to have full functionality. Does anyone have any ideas?

Keep trying or do a hard reset and then try again? I saw another poster had a similar problem, but kept trying and it eventually worked. Sorry, I don't have any other ideas.

---

After browsing around on the mobileread site, I went back and bought a squaretrade warranty (link's still available on the woot blog site for the PE). $20 for a 3-year warranty (only $12 if you don't get the accidental damage coverage) doesn't seem so bad given all that could go wrong.

Unfortunately all the boxes come unsealed. You have to look inside to see what you got. I bought one from 2 other places and both were not new. The one I returned because it was missing the stylus. The other I kept after I was told they didn't have a replacement and offered to take $25 off. Other then a missing speaker protector, everything was there and didn't have any wear or tear. It has worked OK so far, so it wasn't a bad deal. Woot! was suppose to have gone through all theirs, at least a couple of rounds ago. Not sure where they got this batch. You can always contact Woot! to see what they have to say.

Update: I do believe that most are new. 5 out of 6 that I now have are new. BTW the not new, did not come from Woot!, all my Woot! purchases were new. I haven't seen very many this round mention this as an issue.

Yeah, I have done reset for many times. I tried everything that I can do, I even have updated the system to Android 2, but I still can't work with the touch screen. The problem may most possibly lye in the hardware.

Not sure where you are right now. Your first post sounded like you could bypass the registration, but the second post sounds like you're still trying to register. You will have to skip the registration. We need to know exactly where you are and what you are trying to do in order to help you proceed. There should be options and for my part, I would be glad to help.

Man, Chesterton is AMAZING, isn't he? I bought a Kindle over the summer and the main thing I've taken away from it is the rekindling of my deep love for G.K. Chesterton. Even his casual, era-appropriate racism is easier to ignore than that of other authors.

Well, you guys never know what I have done to my new PE. As what I have posted before the touchscreen didn't response to any operation I did on it. So, tonight I opened it! Yes, I opened PE to see what the problem is for this tablet. And I also pull out the wires of both the LCD and the touchscreen. You know what happened then? When I put the wires back to the slot and start the PE again, the touchscreen responded! And it worked. I take less than one minute to set up. And now I can play with it.

Thanks to friartek for his advises. It seems that the problem of my PE is the connection of the touchscreen with the PCB board, maybe cause by delivery. Anyway it is solved now. I am so happy!
