I'm already seeding clients. I guess others found this torrent.

I haven't upgraded to Andriod 2.2 because I'm not sure if I can at this point. I set the network settings but it won't connect. The settings are correct as I have erased and reset them about 100 times. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Upgrading has nothing to do with the network in this case as you either use a USB flash or microSD card to do the upgrade. Consider the 2 as separate issues.

Network -- I assume you went to "Settings" -> "Network Contorls" -> "Wi-Fi" to turn on Wi-Fi. Then into "Wi-Fi settings". You then found your router in the scanned list, selected it and entered your password. At this point it would not connect.

Update: Oops .. Did you actually see your router listed there, or did you do a manual entry? That's what happens when I stay up to late and get up before I had enough beauty sleep. If you see a picture of me, you would now be ROTFL.

It could be several things. The first would be a hardware problem. If you are already using Wi-Fi with other devices then it could possible be your PE. Before we go there you should check your router to see if it is a setting issue.

Is your router set up to only allow known devices to access it. In other words have you set up a list of MAC addresses of known devices, and if so have you added the PE's MAC address to the list. If you have no idea what I'm talking about here, then you most likely are not using this feature.

Is your router restricted to one mode(i.e. N only). As the PE is a b/g device, you would need to have the router in mixed mode to allow the PE access.

If you are using a selectable dual band router, is it restricted to the 5GHz band? The PE only uses the 2.4GHz band.

Some routers have a max device limit. This can be fixed or something that can be set depending on your router. You should check to see if this could be the issue. Is it possible that you reached that max.

Off the top of our heads(talking to one of my sons on the phone as I type - he received his PE yesterday also) this is all we can think of right now. Hope this gives you some place to start looking.

I just received my pocket edge, and I have unsuccessfully been trying to find a way to update this device in order to access any apps. Since the manufacturer site is closed, the older posts on the web sending you to their site no longer work. I came across something called dustyfeet.com, but when I click on it, the website consists of 6 downloads from June of this year. Is there anyway to update this device at all? I can't seem to make the device work without the update. I tried to access the amazon android market, but this device would not allow me to. I can browse the internet and check my email, even tried the journal, but then I am stuck. Please help. Thank you.

Click the 4 corners counterclockwise on the tablet, and you will bypass registration. I watched it on youtube.

When I click the 'journal' icon, it pulls up a sheet of lined paper on the e-ink side, but no matter where I draw on the page, it just makes a vertical line on the far right edge of the display.

Am I misunderstanding something, or do I have a defective unit? Who should I call to deal with this, woot customer service? Would upgrading the firmware either void my warranty or solve my problem?

Click on the menu button on the e-ink side. It will pull up a menu where you can click on tools and then the pencil icon. You should be able to write in your journal after that.

HERE will break you out of the registration. I would suggest you go through all the discussion pages here and at least glance at the posts. There is a wealth of information about the Pocket eDGe and what can be done with it, including upgrading the software, and why you have to break out of the registration process.

You should also check out Mobile Read. The community over there is supporting the EE and PE. Registration is free.

Got mine yesterday. So far Son, I am a disappoint.

I got past the registration using the four corners trick. (youtube it)

Then I upgraded by getting the torrent (search this thread)

Thought I was good to go. I was wrong.

The good -
1) I did get it to play youtube videos and they looked really good.

2) The price is fine. Even if the tablet part is a basically a brick, if I can ever figure out how to get a e-book on it than it will be fine.

The bad -
1) Most things in the 2.2 update just crash. They crash harder than a drunk frat boy on a country road.

2) No gmail app or syncing with your gmail. This is the main reason I wanted the thing. While teaching class pulling out my cell phone to look at the latest "urgent" e-mail about who's lunch is missing sucks. I thought I could use this. Yes, I know I still could use it, but I would have to be logged on to the e-mail account in the browser, and that is a minor pain. The MAJOR pain is not having my calendar sync. I really would love the google calender function. So I don't have to carry my macbook pro with me everywhere, or try to add a calender event to the correct calender on my phone...something that only a spider monkey on crack could figure out.

3) No android market. I never knew how important it was. I can't get netflix, or the before mentioned gmail app.

4) The only way to get the android market is a workaround using a rooted android phone and rooting the device. That would be great, but I can't root my phone - no PC.

5) Downloaded the kindle app and it crashes the unit every time I try to read a book.

6) No idea how to get a epub book on the device, but then again I was tired and frustrated so I did not try that hard.

Well, I was super excited when mine arrived yesterday. It worked beautifully for several glorious hours! I updated! I read books! I showed it off to anyone who'd listen! And then, I turn it on to discover that I get nothing but a bright white screen on the tablet side. I seriously love this thing, so I'm really hoping woot! can replace.

I saw a post on another site that said importing and exporting of vCard was possible on version 2.2. It didn't go into details(it was like a features list).

You should check over at Mobile Read. The community over there is supporting the EE and PE. Registration is free. They have the knowledge base archives from enTourage there. Search their Pocket eDGe forum, someone may have already answered this.

I am wondering why I can't get through the registration step for this device. It lists a code 80 network error but I know I connected to my home network in a previous step. Is this because the device is discontinued. If I can't get past this step, I can't use any of the workaround features. Please advise.

Received 2 of these Friday, and 2 HDSC memory cards and SD size adapters from Newegg Saturday. Both SDHC cards are Transcend brand. One is 8gb and the other 16gb. Both seem to work fine, with good speeds, although I haven't benchmarked them for specifics.

I updated the software on both new pocket edges to android froyo/ermine using the downloaded torrent file named "PocketEdge_updates.zip" and following the included instructions.

Note: If you are updating the software on two of these (as I did) using an SDHC card, the process of updating erases the files from the SDHC card. After I was successful updating my first one, I popped the SDHC card into my other one, and the process failed to work. After a couple of tries, I figured out the problem and recopied the files onto the SDHC card and the second unit updated fine. Just thought I'd post this in case someone else wooted two or three and wanted to update the software like I did.

Thank you to everyone! I followed everyone's advice and successfully bypassed the registration mess (watched YouTube video to figure it out). Then I downloaded the Ermine update files, formatted my USB flash drive, renamed the pocket edge upgrade files to update.zip (as instructed....before doing this it wouldn't work). I followed the instructions to insert my USB device, hold down the menu and rotate buttons, power on my pocketedge and continue holding the buttons until I saw the update screen. Voila! It worked!! Then I once again copied the downloaded files back onto my USB device and repeated the process with my second pocket edge (someone had mentioned that the files would need to be put back on for a 2nd device). THANK YOU!!!

There have been many many individuals who have come across this issue without going across the information which is readily available in this forum on how to navigate past the registration/activation. The device is still fully functional, but the registration process is now obsolete since the company has gone under. That does not change the fact that this touch screen tablet/ebook delivers everything that the product is advertised to do. Again, to bypass the registration simply follow the instructions here Post 4621649, provided by one of the many members who have shared this advice continuously each time it has been asked (and now it seems there is an inquiry about it every next post)... I don't mean to come off as sounding harsh, but it would do some good to glance through what has been contributed here in this thread, especially those messages which include questions from other owners (they are likely confronting the same problem/solution as you and others).

Also have noticed that using amazon apps, I have to have it in the landscape view in order to successfully download anything.
Anyone have success with getting android market? I feel like there really is no way to get this thing fully functional without it.

Try putting the update file back on the USB or microSD card as you did before and power it up again holding down the "menu" and "rotate" keys at least 10 seconds. This could take several minutes to get up, so don't get impatient. As long as the boot firmware is still intact, you hopefully will be able to recover.

If you downloaded the torrent file, there is also a version there called update.golden.zip.dingo.PE which you can copy and rename to update.zip and try it, if it loads correctly it will restore the PE back to the original 1.6 version of Android.

Hello.

Concerning your "bad" issues, after the update, my browser was crashing a lot. It's since settled down. I think it might have been a system resource issue as I keep closing apps that I don't need and that's been successful thus far.

2. I think I read that the Froyo email app syncs with your gmail calendar. I stopped trying to use the K9 app and switched to the Froyo one and I like it. I don't really use my calendar, so I can't speak to that. Check this thread K-9 versus Froyo Email

3. There are other sites you can use to get android apps. I got a couple here.

4. See 3.

5. I also downloaded the kindle app. It didn't crash, but I like using the e-reader side much more so I've begun downloading e-pub books outside of amazon and just putting them in the PE's native library. It really does work well. The only complaint I have is that you can't select a word and open the dictionary. You have to type it into the dictionary yourself. I can copy the word, but I can't find a way to paste it. Perhaps you can paste it into an online dictionary, but I haven't tried, nor do I want to as that would be another unnecessary step.

6. You can either download it straight into the library or download them on a computer and use a flash drive or microsd card to transfer. You can also, and I really love this, turn on LAN sharing on the PE, find your computer on the network, and transfer files from your Public folder on your computer. That's how I'll probably transfer anything.

Oh, and it won't recognize NTFS formatted usb drives. Only FAT32. Another reason I'll probably just use the LAN method of transferring files.

The more I use this thing, the more I love it and really hope it doesn't die on me.

Status:

I updated to Ermine 0.9 (2.2.1 version of Android, 2.6.34 kernel) using the MobileRead.com forum advice. Still unable to play videos. Using YouTube or using the "Tube" app it still says "Failed to get video".

So I got the YouTube video app (.apk) from this webpage.

http://www.freewarelovers.com/android/download/temp/1313157019_com.google.android.youtube-2.2.16.apk

Works. I'm watching Allison Krause sing right now.

But hey, it's not that fast loading HD video across my wireless LAN so the video has pauses. I should have looked for the low res version of the video. This video is too high quality! Looks good!

Good luck!

P.S. I am not optimistic the Pocket Edge will always play YouTube videos. Seems like YouTube keeps tweaking their format because they hate programs that download the videos instead of playing them, and I guess they don't recognize some of the older versions of Android.

After a day of sampling the PE and getting a feel for it, I have to say that it is an indispensable tool for those who read ebooks frequently and research as well as write on topics. From that aspect alone, it is a gem for me since I am very heavily weighted in activities requiring my authorship or editing... the device basically consolidates everything I would typically use to write on a subject, review, and edit.

As for the PE being an entertainment device (which is not the reason I had purchased it), although a nice convenience, many of the features require add-ons/apps that are either impossible to get (because of the lack of accessibility in the android market) or requires much technical savvy to acquire. I'm sure there are websites that will assist in the obtaining of apps (a few have been mentioned here) but they do seem limited in content.

One huge gripe (and question) I have is that the PE cannot run animated GIFs in its browser (as far as I'm aware). As a pilot, this is an upsetting inconvenience to me since I sought to use the device to access time-lapse loops of weather satellite and radar. The PE with its native browser software does not animate any of the images I typically use. I also installed a separate browser (Dolphin) with no successful outcome in that regard. With some research I learned that this is a limitation of Android(?)... although, there may be a work around? If anyone knows any good way to remedy this, I'd value the feedback immensely.(?)

Boots up quick and is easy to use.

Boots up quick and is easy to use.
I like mine and don't think you can do much better for the price.

What 3rd PaRTY site did you get the upgrade to 2.2 on??? I can't find any.

I got mine yesterday, charged it up, booted in for the first time and found it interesting that I didn't get the registration screen at all. Interesting, but somewhat handy, I suppose, since people have not been able to register.

I have since updated it to ermine, downloaded a bunch of apps and content, and I finally became frustrated with the inability to use Android Marketplace, so I tried to root the thing.

That would be when I discovered for sure that I was NOT sent a new machine, as there's an email address for a construction company in CT set up as the Adobe ID, and whoever had the machine there apparently set the system password that I need in order to turn debugging on, which is critical for rooting, from what I can tell.

I'm another customer who got sold used goods as new, and I am NOT a happy camper. I've emailed WOOT about it, and we'll see what they have to say for themselves.

Did anyone figure out how to register the Pocket Edge? I cannot get past part 6 of the registration. Frustrated.

Sorry if I sound curt, but I already answered this the last time your asked(see a few post back). Also it has been on, if not every page, almost every page of this discussion. I would have to say you have not looked everywhere. There is a wealth of information on this discussion, it would be well worth your time to go through it.

You should also check out Mobile Read. The community over there is supporting the EE and PE. Registration is free.

It's completely white. Just like this person's. Unfortunately very much a hardware problem, so it's going to have to go back to woot.
