I was just able to get pandora, facebook and youtube to work great!!

PS
I have upgraded to the newer android.

I have updated mine and I am STILL trying to use it as an ereader for all of my textbooks and it DOES NOT WORK!!!! I suppose it needs the adobe flash to work, but its not. When it pulls up the link to my textbook (an ipublishcentral website), it won't pull up the book. VERY frustrating and thinking this piece of garbage may end up in a garage sale if it doesn't get to working right soon.

Have you tried over at Mobile Read to see if they have an answer. They are supporting the EE(10" eDGe) and the PE(Pocket eDGe). There is a much larger group of contributors there with a broader knowledge base. Registration is free. There is a Pocket eDGe forum you can search. Also enTourage's "knowledge base", as it was called, was mirrored there before they closed their doors. Someone else already commented that it is a "wealth of information". I already found several answers myself.

Hello, folks. Thanks for the very helpful information that has been posted here. I am curious if anyone else has experienced the issue I am having with my PE.

I received it Saturday, charged it for several hours, played with it for an hour, closed it up, plugged it up, and went to bed. Sunday morning I was greeted by a blank LED screen and the unit will not wake up (from hibernation, I suppose, after having closed it up the prior evening). The green LED is lit showing it should be powered on. I have reset it a >10 times using a paper clip.

This is a heartbreaker. Anyone else in this camp?

At this point it might be best to take these issues over to Mobile Read. I believe the community over there is more knowledgeable in this area. A number of us have been hanging around here to help get everyone started. To get past the registration issues and even get the upgrade installed.

You can register for free. They also have a mirror of enTourage's knowledge base they obtained prior to their shutting down. You can also search the Pocket eDGe forum there, it may already contain your answer.

You haven't said what is going on, on the reader side. Depressing the reset switch is just like doing a reboot. The reader should flash several times displaying initializing... When it completes the reader should show the X image along with Pocket eDGe, with lines that start with Read - Write and Surf under that. This would indicate that it rebooted. Can you confirm that this is happening? This would give us a better idea of the health of your PE.

Someone else a while back had mentioned that their screen had a loose connection, too, that might be an issue.

I haven't gotten my PE yet, but I've been following this forum since I ordered it, and Friartek has been a friggin superhero with the question answering. Plus he has an awesome name.

Patience people! You bought it because it was inexpensive! I say if you have to do a little reading and ask a couple of questions to get your gadget working, that's well worth the money you didn't spend buying it new.

Unless yours is bricked. Then you have my condolences. Sucks, dude.

Is there anyone moderating this discussion that could insert a comment up above the first comment with the most useful links? Might cut down on a little of the "Hey, I'm stuck at registration" stuff. Certainly complaining about it isn't going to help, as it would require people to read the discussion before posting, which is kind of the problem to begin with.

F**K. Even in the future nothin' works.

Concerning your "bad" issues, after the update, my browser was crashing a lot. It's since settled down. I think it might have been a system resource issue as I keep closing apps that I don't need and that's been successful thus far.

2. I think I read that the Froyo email app syncs with your gmail calendar. I stopped trying to use the K9 app and switched to the Froyo one and I like it. I don't really use my calendar, so I can't speak to that. Check this thread K-9 versus Froyo Email

3. There are other sites you can use to get android apps. I got a couple here.

4. See 3.

5. I also downloaded the kindle app. It didn't crash, but I like using the e-reader side much more so I've begun downloading e-pub books outside of amazon and just putting them in the PE's native library. It really does work well. The only complaint I have is that you can't select a word and open the dictionary. You have to type it into the dictionary yourself. I can copy the word, but I can't find a way to paste it. Perhaps you can paste it into an online dictionary, but I haven't tried, nor do I want to as that would be another unnecessary step.

6. You can either download it straight into the library or download them on a computer and use a flash drive or microsd card to transfer. You can also, and I really love this, turn on LAN sharing on the PE, find your computer on the network, and transfer files from your Public folder on your computer. That's how I'll probably transfer anything.

Oh, and it won't recognize NTFS formatted usb drives. Only FAT32. Another reason I'll probably just use the LAN method of transferring files.

The more I use this thing, the more I love it and really hope it doesn't die on me.

Thanks for the reply. I finally manged to root my phone, so I plan on fooling the device using the mobile reads trick. I will be using the rest of your info for the other stuff. Thanks again!

I like the idea, but what if in front of the "+ add a comment" button was a button that said something like "valuable comments, a must read"(open to discussion) that would be linked to that first comment. Also if it was a special color to make it more noticeable. You would think it would require a minimal change to do something like that. We could also take this over to the "world of woot" discussion so every one could discuss it. Also the staff is more likely to see it there.

I hope I get a good one after all this....starting to worry after reading all these posts. Does anyone know how many of these were sold by Woot?

Page 1 of this discussion, the very top of the page, shows all the stats. I know it doesn't feel like it when your the one that got one that is bad, but with the number sold and the number of reported hardware/not new issues that I've seen here; the odds of getting a bad one are very slim. I hope that holds true for the rest of you awaiting delivery.

friartek,

The reader screen looks as you described (logo, Read, Write, and Surf). But there is nothing going on with the Android tablet screen--it's blank. When I press the reset switch, there is no flashing of either screen. The reader just turns off (the power light goes off).

friratek (and many others) thank you for helping those of us new to woot. This is a very helpful community and there is much wisdom contained within the 16 pages of this discussion.

I will be posting this issue on the mobileread forum as well (thanks, all, for the pointer to that helpful site, as well).

No, something did happen. Your have to remember that in order for the reader side to change, the system has to change it. If the power just went off the reader would remain exactly as it was. That is the way e-ink works. Under normal operation, before it goes into hibernation or turns off, the system displays a diagram of the reader with instructions or what to do to start it up from these states. These remain on the screen until the system changes them. When you first opened the box there was an image displayed on the reader side.

UPDATE: Oops.. Maybe I didn't get enough sleep again last night. I think I misread your information. Brain said the reader screen went blank, but that does not appear on second reading to be what you said. So ignore the above, but I still think it worth while to at least try charging the PE again. What do you have to loose - a little time and electricity?

If the power light is off, what happens if you try to power the PE back up. Also have you tried to charge the unit since you did the initial charge?

This is a shot in the dark, but the PEs have been reported to have an issue with the power connector. Even with the plug in, sometime it just doesn't sit quite right. The way you know if its charging would be to look at the LED. it should be flashing slowly, two seconds off and one second on(a full second, not just a quick flash). Fully charged it will be on solid. As I said a shot in the dark, but worth a try. BTW I have one that has a touchy power plug. An irritation that I find worth living with.

It's not quite the corners. Press just under the white banner for the top. I think people have been trying the very corners at the top... sort of confusing.

This procedure will break you out of "any" setup screen, even if the network is not available. Just remember that if there is a top bar displayed, the touch point at the top is under that bar, still in a counter clockwise direction. Even if it doesn't work the first time, try it again - slowly making contact for up to a second. My testing would indicate that the procedure resets itself each time you touch the upper left position.

I'm in the same boat - I'm over on the other side of MI, but was tempted to drive over there this weekend just for fun, it's not a long drive... So why is it so hard for FedEx? Here I was thinking since it arrived at their facility Friday evening, they'd just be shut down for the weekend and start moving stuff again when Monday came... so much for that.

Amusing thing is, I ordered some products from Japan this summer, and despite ordering Sunday, and the international post suggesting it may take two weeks for delivery, I had my order in my hands Wednesday. Both times.

I'm hoping it comes soon so I can just get my stuff set up with the help of the useful posts in this thread before I have to go sift through a hundred more posts asking how to get past the registration screen. I don't even have mine yet, and I know how! It's kind of frustrating. ;)

I wouldn't blame FedEx to much. From personal experience of at least 20 SmartPost deliveries, it is most likely the USPS where most of the issues lie.

After I see that my package has left the my closest FedEx SmartPost center the rest is a crap shoot. Also the updates tend to be slow from USPS. Mine go through a USPS hub before it comes to my local post office. It sometimes sits at the hub for days before moving on. Sometimes I get the package before the post office does any updates. Other times I see it at the local post office and delivered before the hub does there update to the status.

As I said - a crap shoot. I do have to say most make it to me by the estimated delivery date(knock on wood).

Yeah, I used to work for the USPS, so I know how many things they're trying to do at once, and how often the ball gets dropped on little things like tracking updates. Can't even tell you how many times I've gotten tracking info after the package has arrived. In this case, though, it's been listed as sitting in a FedEx facility since Friday afternoon.

Given past experience, if the USPS had had it Friday evening, I'm pretty sure I'd have received it today regardless of what tracking updates there may have been, if not Saturday. (I mean, the USPS is moving things along, 24 hours a day, even on Sundays and holidays - I actually worked a few Christmas Eve/Christmas overnights. With FedEx, I don't have the inside knowledge, and thus when I see a package just SITTING there, fear of the unknown kicks in... or at least impatience with the unknown. ;))

Unboxed it and put it on charge for an hour...then I upgraded to 2.2 - man what a difference. I dont have a wireless hotspot i can connect to right here or I would test that too.

I was a little puzzled by the Journal, but finally figured out the settings for that - sweeeeet. When u launch Calendar (for instance), not only can you set an appt on the tablet side, but the Journal side pops up so you can jot a few notes to add to the calendar.

I have a Kindle as well, and I am converting some books to ePub with Calibre (http://calibre-ebook.com/) to try reading on it. I already converted some news feeds the same way.

The USB drive to update the OS worked flawlessly, and only took about 5-10 minutes.

I love how you can flip from the Journal to the ereader so easily. Soon as i get my wireless connected, i am going to try doing some Google word searches from the ereader side.

so far, my PE rocks!!

EDIT: One thing i did notice that it doesn't do which my kindle does...is the ability to click on URLs on the Reader side, or on different chapters. You can do this on PDFs because the table of contents shows up on the tablet side, but on ePub books you cant (from what I have see already). I do most of my reading on my Kindle anyway, so I don't know how much that is a factor for me - I still love my PE

I assume both of you mean you can't get through the registration process. No one has reported being stuck at the time section before. If that is the case, I would have to say you are not connected to the network.

You still need to break out of the registration process on matter where it is hung.

You should read this previous post.

It would also be helpful to you to read through these discussions. There have been many posts in it answering this and other questions, including how to obtain the file necessary to upgrade your PE along with the instructions.
