I didn't give them my answer until I had fully checked it out, but 46 years of computer experience told me what to look for. I ran it for 72 hours checked out all features before keeping it. I hope this question does not put you out...it is off topic. From this discussion (and your 46 years experience) I have come to respect your opinion, Friartek.

What do you think of turning the Nook color into a tablet with the preloaded microSD card with Gingerbread. Not rooting the Nook, but using the card as the operating system?

I wish I could answer that question, but contrary to popular belief I don't know everything.

On woot-offs I tend to miss items if I haven't seen and researched the item first. Come to think of it, even on regular woot, I've missed items that sold out early while I researched them.

My first reader was a kobo, given as a gift(it wouldn't have been my personal first choice). It did server me well until the e-ink screen died. At least I already had my 1st PE before it died, so switching over was easy. The added features made it even easier.

The PE was fairly easy to get into for me. 27 years of UNIX servers and workstations(Sun, HP, SGI, IBM among others). FreeBSD, NetBSD and OpenBSD somewhere in there. 17 years of Linux. The progression from UNIX to Linux to Android(Linux) wasn't hard. My primary PCs and Servers(even my routers) all run one distribution or another of Linux. The PCs are dual boot - Linux and Window 7, but booting W7 normally only happens when a family member calls with a MS problem.

I wouldn't be surprised that someone over at MobileRead hasn't already tried it, or maybe that is why you are asking. Even my mp3 players(SanDisk Sansa) are running RockBox. So dual booting is not uncommon. Alpha versions my be a little risky. Beta versions, at least wait till the major bugs have been fixed. If thy are already calling it a stable release, there shouldn't be much of a problem.

Reading through the discussion groups will tell you a lot of what is going on with the software you want to use. I wish I had a more direct answer. Good luck.

Update: Running from a microSD card will be somewhat slower, but at least you won't have the problem of restoring the nook back to its original state since your not changing the core software. The one video I saw looked good. It was a Mac based setup, Linux should be easy. A Windows setup may need some additional software. Looks like my kind of fun. I'm not going to go out and buy a nook, if I did I would have to find a new place to live, or at least sleep in the dog house for a while.

Thank you! I was able to get a new Nook color at another site for 149.99 and have seen the microSDs with the dual boot on eBay and Amazon that do not affect the Nook itself and was hoping that you might have some insight. I am using Mobilereads, and cnet had some info. I was hoping you might know, too.

I think I will give it a try....if it works I am getting a great tablet for less than $200.00.....fingers crossed!

We know you're anxious to get to multitasking with the dualbook. Unfortunately, shipping to APO addresses can sometimes take up to 6 weeks for delivery, but it usually comes sooner than that. Give it until the 6th week to deliver and you might want to check with your local delivery service to see if they have it. Please email us at service@woot.com if you need further assistance.

Your infolink post should be stickied at the top;
very useful index to everything-

On the ebooks, I've downloaded a few in the different formats available, and it looks like most of them need to be read with a corresponding app on the tablet side; is there any universal conversion process that can bring it over to the reader side to take advantage of the low power consumption of the e-ink?

I've been mostly getting books from Gutenberg, and they have epub format which works fine. I haven't checked out the others, yet.

To convert you should get Calibre. Its free and works great. Runs on Mac, Linux and Windows.

From the manual/FAQ:
What formats does calibre support conversion to/from?

Calibre supports the conversion of many input formats to many output formats. It can convert every input format in the following list, to every output format.

Input Formats: CBZ, CBR, CBC, CHM, EPUB, FB2, HTML, HTMLZ, LIT, LRF, MOBI, ODT, PDF, PRC, PDB, PML, RB, RTF, SNB, TCR, TXT, TXTZ

Output Formats: EPUB, FB2, OEB, LIT, LRF, MOBI, HTMLZ, PDB, PML, RB, PDF, RTF, SNB, TCR, TXT, TXTZ

What devices does calibre support?

Lots of readers..., Entourage Edge,...Lots more.

There is also support over at the MobileRead Calibre forum.

There is also an epub editor by Sigil, along with a Sigil forum on MobileRead. This editor can be used to clean up epubs after conversions. Sigil supports multiple platforms(Linux, Mac OS X, and Windows) and has 64 bit versions.

Both applications are downloadable and free but they do except donations.

Heads up - for those interested in connecting to the Market, a fix has been recently posted on the Edge forum on the mobileread.com site.

I am still waiting to try it, but judging from the reaction to date, it appears to be a working fix. It also appears to be helpful in getting Talk to work.

P.S., I purchased my PE on the second Woot. This thread remains very useful.

I've bought 2 of these little buggers, one for me and one for my husband. So far, so good.
I did do the upgrade to the 2.2 beta on mine, it worked perfectly.

The Amazon Kindle app works great on it and while you can't run every other Android app on it you can do quite a bit.

I find I use the tablet side far more than the e-ink side. It's great to read on in bed in the middle of the night when you can't sleep.

I had originally bought it as a "tester" to see if I liked e-ink or or a lit screen better before spending a lot more money on a new Kindle or tablet, and figured it would tide me over until the newer stuff came down in price and clearer standards shook out.
It's been well worth the money so far and I'll use it until it dies.

My only complaint is that it's a bit heavy because of the dual screen. I have carpal tunnel probs in my left wrist, and sometimes it flares up while holding onto this thing.

Ive got the update flashed to the PE; when going to youtube through the browser, the videos don't play, only showing a big circle/slash. It'd be one thing if it was just choppy due to processing power, but it doesn't even give a college try.

Is there some other app that's needed to play youtube videos? I recall before the update, there was an icon for youtube, but that didn't work either.

My Pocket Edge is my new best friend. With a sprinkle of love and an upgrade of the Android OS, this was an amazing deal. The gizmo carries my books, tells me the news and weather, plays movies for me, and spins tunes from Pandora. I forgive it for being too weak to run a normal paced game of Angry Birds. I love you, pocket edge. MWAH. If WOOT would run this deal again I'd buy one for everyone I know. We don't need no stinkin' entourage store. Everyone should have a friend like the Edge. That's what Bono says. But I guess that's irrelevant.

I believe the post over at xda-developers gives a more detailed process. I installed it and it worked like a champ. There were some cautions about doing it after installing other apps after the ermine upgrade, but it has worked great on mine and several others without going back to scratch. I already updated my earlier post towards the top of this page with the info.

Also note that some things are added/changed on existing apps. If you go to "settings" -> "About eDGe" you will see that the Model number instead of being "edgejr" is now "Nexus One" and the Build number is now "Froyo" where it was "ermine-0.9". Best guess; the update was adapted form a Nexus One update, and not everything got changed. It doesn't appear to effect anything, at least nothing I've found so far. The reader still works, which was my first concern.

I'll wait a few more days, and if there are no more posts added here, I'll re-post the long post at the end.

Someone was asking about Netflix - I can tell you that 1.4.1 does NOT work - it will attempt to start the movie, fail, and go back to your queue screen. I read somewhere (can't find the source) that it has something to do with the fact that Netflix doesn't support the processor that the eDGe uses (I think it's ARM5 or something).

There is a new version of the Netflix app (1.5) and there is some hope that the eDGe will work with it, but it seems unlikely, as new versions are unlikely to be working towards backwards compatibility.

If anyone knows of a previous version of Netflix app that works for ARM5 processors, I'd be interested in finding that out.
