You can buy skins for $14.99, tons of designs to choose from, it's surprising how many are available.

I have the pocket (thanks woot) and enjoy it. My route was to upgrade to frodo, throw in a 8 gig sdhc, load up on ebooks (tons of free, even legal(!), books out there) and occasionally play bejewled/minesweeper clones. One minor complaint is that recently MANY of the apps in the Amazon app store report they are not compatible with the device. These aren't gps driven apps, some seem like they should work on any android device (examples escape me) but it is a bother.

This is mildly off-topic but I was wondering if anyone owns the full size edge dualbook? I would be interested in buying one for the slightly better processor and e-ink screen. Or at least hearing if anyone uses it on the jobsite like the included video alluded too.

Thanks

Actually, the lack of accelerometer and need to tell the system to rotate the screen I view as a plus. Thing I hate about auto rotation is laying in bed, reading, shifting position just enough that the system thinks it should now display in landscape mode. Arrrrrgh.

I bought one of these last time and like it pretty well. I just bought another one for my husband, who said he liked mine and would like one if it ever shows up again.

I upgraded it to the 2.2 beta and haven't had any problems with that version.

I had originally bought it because I wanted an e-reader and/or a table but didn't know if I would like the e-ink or lit table side better, and this thing had both.

There are going to be a bunch of changes coming down the pipe in the Android tablet market in the future, and the prices will no doubt come down. This device will tide me over until it all shakes out and until I decide what I really want to stick with.

I use it mostly for reading books (Kindle app on the tablet side), PDFs of technical docs for work (on the e-ink side) and light web browsing from bed when I can't sleep in the middle of the night.

The only thing I don't like too much is that it's a bit heavy, I have carpal tunnel in one wrist and sometimes it starts to bother me after holding this for awhile.

Sorry, hadn't visited the site since I received our last PE, maybe a week or two ago. At worst case I'll see if I can find a place to upload the copy I have. One kind person has a copy, but the download was slow so I'll see if I can find another site. Hopefully I will post the URL for another location yet today, If not at least before they ship. I'll keep you update.

I have one that I paid $150 for and am so tempted to buy a second at this price. I absolutely adore this for travel. It fits in my purse (which is not huge by any means) and doesn't weigh 15 lbs like my old laptop. Any epub book will work as long as you have registered your device (and although the company has shut down, the site IS still available to register. Instructions should be included with the device), yes library books included! Did the upgrade to 2.2 (google search for xda developers pocket edge) and it is great. True, no google market but I don't care to much about that. Enough other places to get apps. You can also get really nice skins for it online. Only problem I have had so far is the eink side touchscreen isn't working anymore. I have heard it can have problems with the ribbon cable. I don't care as I only use it to read anyways and can type notes on the other side if it's really important. Yep, you can plug in a usb keyboard (also found a tiny one for travel). I prefer this touchscreen myself as I have long fingernails and as such I always screw up on the capacitative types. Screen is very responsive. I think I just talked myself into another one

Bought one of these the first time it was on woot, and I was thrilled with it for the first week. After that I began to realize the limitations imposed by the sluggish hardware and dated OS. It does what it was made to do--reading, music, etc.--but not smoothly. The whole thing just feels really slow.

Worst of all, after a month or so of use, the e-ink side just stopped working. I tried everything, including taking it apart. I eventually gave up and trashed it.

I think the idea has potential, but the backing behind the product itself is too small to warrant a purchase of $80.

I have one that I bought when they cost about twice this . I use it a lot and have no complaints with the speed, but I did upgrade the OS. As others have mentioned, it's really easy to do. I get apps from Amazon and books from wherever - I have Nook, Kindle, and Overdrive software installed on the tablet side in addition to the e-ink reader, so can read books in just about any format there is. That said, I mostly use it for web browsing. I have been quite happy with mine.

someone mentioned that you can hook up an external drive to this with the USB port? Can anyone verify that? Because that is awesome. Holy hell, if that's the case you can buy a portable HDD pretty cheap, load it up with whatever movies and music you want, and this becomes a pretty handy little travel gadget. Back in the early days of the PSP that was always my greatest frustration, that it seemed like such an OBVIOUS oversight not to include the ability to add a more substantial external data source.

I have to say to all the haters on here, I think most people realize this is not an iPad. I've had a niggling notion to buy an eReader for a while now (so I don't have to pay for the ridiculous number of books that exist in the public domain), and having looked around, this seems like a pretty good deal for someone who doesn't mind putting in a little bit of effort upgrading.

To be fair though, I haven't actually received mine yet. I may sing a different tune after it arrives, but I'm optimistic.

F**K. Even in the future nothin' works.

I already have one of the, bought the first time they were on Woot! and I love it. Upgrade the op system and it is fantastic.
As for reading books, you can read ANY book from anywhere on it if you Calibre to convert the book and then use Bibliotech on the Edge to open it. You can also open the book through the reader side or the tablet side, so I can read at the pool or beach with the reader side and in bed with all the lights of (so I don't keep my hubby up) with the tablet side.
My sister bought and a friend of mine both got one and they both love theirs also (as long as I continue to handle the tech stuff for them...lol).
If you have enough skill to find the websites with instructions (and can follow the instructions) to upgrade this, it will be a great little gadget for you.
My friend is in nursing school and uses it to record lectures (camera and microphone are built in), has school books downloaded into it, which she opens on the reader side and highlights and marks in them, gets her email in it, plus recreational stuff (books and games).
I just bought another one, so I have a back up if mine ever breaks! At this price you can't beat it!

I've have mine for 8 months now and like it a alot. I have been able to pull apps from many places and I like the dual screen. It's lite and since it closes like a book I don't have to worry about the screens getting cracked like other "Pads".

I reccomend if for those on a budget.

The version of android isn't compatible with hardly anything. You can't even get the market on it! Even after it was rooted there were minimal apps that would actually work with it. There are only a hand full of books that will work with the e-reader. Check it out fully before you buy!

What books are you trying to read? I've had no problems at all with pdfs. If you have other formats, Calibre is a great program to use for sorting and for conversion. You can get Amazon app market on it (though not nearly as large as google's) I have run into problems with app compatibility, especially newer games. Most of the issues stem from the lack of accelerometer and multitouch. Mostly I use mine as a media player, so it doesn't bother me that I can't play many games.

Oh well.

Can you have an ebook on the e-ink side and your email up on the tablet side? I'm a constant email checker (work email, usually) and that would be a nice function.

Yes, oh most definitely yes! I do this frequently- read a book on the e-reader side, and have google chat or something else open on the tablet side.

Yes, there are drawbacks to this device, but for what it is, I LOVE IT! It is an e-reader, so I can take as many books with me on a trip as I want, without taking up more space. It is a tablet so as long as I have a wi-fi connection, I'm online. It is a bit bulky, but For Pete's Sake- it's an e-reader *AND* a tablet! It's two devices so it is going to be bulky!

I have converted a couple of my son's DVDs to MP4s and that saved my bacon on our flight from AZ to PA last month. I saw no problems with the video playback on the Edge.

Yes, I wish I could access Android Market, but there are workarounds (I just haven't tried them yet, and don't have an Android phone). Mobileread.com forums are amazing. Huge amounts of information there, just please, do a search before asking a question that has probably been asked before!

Good luck, and dangitall, BUY ONE!! (I'm seriously considering buying a second one...)

Since the Edge uses Adobe DRM, this isn't necessary if you have their Digital Editions software. Just authorize the device with your Adobe account.

So good I bought it four times now. My wife and I each have one and the new ones are going to the oldest kids. It's a great ebook reader that functions equally well as a media player/internet browser. There are enough apps that work on it to fulfill many of a standard user's needs.

Here are the apps I currently have installed on my edge:

Android Zip
Titanium Backup
Amazon Appstore
MTG Deck Forge (yeah, I still play at 32)
Ebay app
tTorrent
Backgrounds
Manga Watcher
DroidAppz (another good source of apps)
Life
Monopoly
Jewels
DarkNova
Wordsmith
Chess/Checkers
MechanicsTouch
Deadly Dungeon
Townsmen 6
Grave Defense Gold
Majesty
Angry Birds
Star Trader
Pirates and Traders
Droid Minigolf

There are more that I had installed in the past that I eventually got bored with. Titanium backup makes it easy to uninstall and reinstall later if you wish.

All in all, I am very pleased with my pocket edge and since it is now about half the price of when I bought mine, I would say it's a must buy. This recommendation still stands despite the lack of manufacturer support. There seems to be a growing community of users, hackers and developers hell bent on making sure this little dandy fights obsolescence.

So far, Netflix just won't play with the edge. Sorry... There are alternatives but none have the convenience factor of Netflix. I've relegated myself to buying mp4s or ripping them myself (from movies I own, of course). These will play beautifully.

I bought a red one last time. I am very happy with this product. In fact, I just got 2 more. I use it for work and home. You can do everything on this that you can with a laptop or desktop, just not as easy.
I have written and edited word and pdf files.
I have gobs of music and pics on it.
I switch out SD and USB's frequently.
I have watched a movie (fast and furious 5 dnld).
I read ALL the time, and have text books, regular books, and reports.
I surf the net often.
I play games. Granted, I play card and tile games, but games none the less.

I truly enjoy it. It is small, goes anywhere, and everyone always asks "Where did you get it?" The only bad things are
1. after the upgrade, wifi connection is spotty sometimes, not often enough to be its downfall, but annoying.
2. No android market unless you have android phone or emulator. But you have Amazon and others.
