How is the note taking experience on the e-ink side? Would this, theoretically, replace the vaporware that is the noteslate?

Supports:
MP3, WAV, 3GPP, MP4, AAC, OGG, M4A

You can connect to it via USB, I do it with Linux all the time, so Mac shouldn't be a problem. Looks like another folder.

I assume you are asking if there is an iTune app. Don't know, but you can always covert to MP3 and download to it. Maybe someone else can tell us if there is such an app.

The web browser is just OK since it has Android 1.6.
There is an upgrade to Ermine (Froyo 2.2) possible through 3rd party sites. Since I upgraded, the tablet works great and is as good as most of the less expensive ones out there (its NOT an Ipad) for email / simple web browsing.
Boots up quick and is easy to use.
I like mine and don't think you can do much better for the price.

How do you upgrade?

I ordered one earlier today and decided to get a 2nd just now. Does Woot have some sort of policy about ordering the same product again? It says my account has laready ordered this product and won't let me order another one.

Thanks,

Does anyone use one of these for general note-taking? Does it come with OCR, or is there an app that will do OCR and make notes searchable?

Some Android powered devices have software that lets you import iTunes playlists, guess for this it's not the case... thanks for clarifying.

Can it handle .mkv and .avi video files? I have moboplayer on my phone that handles these great and was wondering if moboplayer works on this device.

I love my touchpad, but get tired of converting .mkv's to .mp4's all the time (and no, I will not sell you mine... In fact, I want to buy another one).

The product is pretty solid. Its on the slow slide so you won't be using it to play any games, or use an app like netflix. Its best for browsing the web, using rss feed readers(pulse), dropbox, woot, reddit, as well as the amazon app store. The lcd screen isn't that great, but its usable.

The eink screen is the same quality as a kindle and the refresh rate is really fast. I tend to use this more as a dedicated ereader device, but one that has a better internet experience by far than any other ereader on the market.

Its small, lightweight, and the outer case provides very good protection making it quite durable. The batterylife is so so, ~6hours with the lcd, ~12 with the eink screen. Standby is hit or miss, but usually it works pretty well. Sometimes the battery doesn't drain out even after a week of standby, sometimes I think its in standby and its dead the next day.

At 80.00 you won't be disappointed. I'd highly recommend this product even when considering the newest wave of ereaders that have been hitting the market.

Well, it's certainly not a "minimalistic design," so it's probably safe from an Apple lawsuit.

I want one of these. I don't have the money right now, but I did do some research today on the device:

- Color screen is nice and responsive, eInk screen isn't as responsive and might downright suck, so really only good for eReader function. Some games seem to run good on this device.

- You can plug in an external USB keyboard

- Comes with Wi-Fi, but if you want wired ethernet you need to purchase an adapter

- Upgrading is a mixed bag. Rooting the unit is not needed. Upgrading can make your unit not work at all and at current there may be no way to fix the problem. The Ermine 2.2 upgrade was Beta, so it was never finished.

- Borders Nook and Amazon Kindle software works on Android 2.1 and above, so you won't be able to use these on a stock device.. you will need to risk trying the upgrade. You can however just stick to free ePub and PDF books that are available online. If you use PDF books they sometimes don't work right, so you will need to convert them, but not all of them will convert. As far as I see ePub has no issues like that.

- As suggested by others here that mobileread forum is a great community and wealth of knowledge. They are quick to help. There's some people there who might be able to help you save your device if you're upgrading and it doesn't work, but no guarantees. They're probably just the guys who have the most knowledge. From what I read some people are working on fixing the upgrade so there are no problems upgrading.

So- which one is worth the $100? The enTourage or this eMatic eGlide sold at Wal-mArt?

That is flash memory, for storage. The original poster asked about RAM, which was not shown in the product description. 512MB is the actual answer to his question.

Got one last time. Excellent hardware for the price. However, the OS is very out of date. It is hard to find apps that will run on this device. That said, at the price, it does do what it was intended to do.

I still intend to try to hack it and install Android 2.2.

One big drawback was that some of the DRM ePub readers only work on the tablet part. They will not drive the e-ink display.

A good device for the price, but it is a bit of an orphan.

Little comparison. If you are OK with a standard tablet get one. This is only of interest to you if you want an e-ink display.

Just bought one, I'm planning on giving it to my step-dad since I already have an e-reader and Touchpad. He's interested in the concept of e-readers, but doesn't like that on most devices, you can't take notes on the side.

Hopefully, this Dualbook can help fill that void.

As others have mentioned, it's really easy to do. I get apps from Amazon and books from wherever - I have Nook, Kindle, and Overdrive software installed on the tablet side in addition to the e-ink reader, so can read books in just about any format there is. That said, I mostly use it for web browsing. I have been quite happy with mine.

I bought my first one from the company for nearly $400. Everyone that sees it wants one, and my early teens grandkids fell in love with mine so I picked up two for them today.
There is a lively community on MobileRead and they have preserved all the tips and tweaks from the original user forum over there as well. The final 2.2 beta upgrade adds a lot of speed and access to apps that weren't possible on 1.6. In my opinion the only downside to this device is that it will never progress any further due to the company's demise, but for the time being it's a great little device and the reader screen is much better than my Kindle 2.

Haven't had any luck with Skype. It's not one of their supported boxes and it seems to just have the app crash.

It does do video and chat with some other apps out there. Getting android apps without market access is a bit of a PITA... I found it great for email and light web. After upgrading to the 2.2 Android beta (took 15-20 mins) it's been a workhorse email tablet for me.

I bought one... if only because this will do better than the upcoming Boogieboard RIP (you can recall notes you previously made and edit them) and has the addition of an android tablet on the side which neither boogieboard or the noteslate could provide.

Can anyone comment on the notetaking performance? That's my biggest concern.

I bought 2 of these last time. Basically a waste of money IMHO. They are just too outdated and too slow. Sure you can reflash with newer OS, and sure you can root it and put Google's Android Market on it. But nothing neat from Android Market works on this device. Only older apps that are basically poorly supported any more.

Next time around I'll just get a Kindle. Easier to use, MUCH longer battery life, and fully supported.
