LOL sooooo true!

Let's face it, it's C-R-A-P! It's fun to get, but C-R-A-P nonetheless.

Carry on....

I saw this "fan" at Fry's one day, and once I got up close and saw how it worked, it was like seeing a magic trick that you'd already figured out. In a word, yawn. That's what this fan is: a snoozer magic trick.

This thing moves less air than the processor fan on a netbook. It's probably fun to throw footballs through at 20 yards, but that's where the functionality comes to a halt.

They had one of these next to a Vornado compact at Frys. Similar size, one $40, the other $200(on sale). I turned both on low and the Dyson was fairly quiet with the vornado being slightly louder but the Vornado was actually moving air, the dyson was blowing no harder than an 80mm 10cfm fan. I turned the Dyson to high while leaving the Vornado on low, the Vornado was still moving more air but the Dyson was obnoxiously loud for how much air it was moving. The other problem was it wasn't typical fan blade cutting through air, it is an annoying motor noise. I turned the Vornado to high and it was a bit louder than the Dyson, but it was air noise not motor noise. In terms of moving air, I'm surprised the dyson wasn't blown off of the table, because the Vornado clearly blew it away. Dyson hypes the anti buffetting technology(as any squirrel cage fan will do), but the vornado has a similar effect. With it's odd shaped blades and louvers it makes a smooth air stream. As a final test I turned off the Vornado, kept the Dyson on high, and walked back to see how far I could feel it. By 15 feet out I was trying to tell myself I could feel it, but wasn't sure. At 10 feet I could tell air was coming from it, but 5 more feet I wasn't sure. I walked over and turned off the Dyson and cranked the Vornado on high then started to walk away. At 50' away it was very easy to tell that I was still feeling air from it. I didn't any more samples.

Dyson is great at marketing, their vacuums suck pretty well, but this fan simply sucks and even at this price you'd get a far better blow getting a different fan.

1) Buy a 120mm PC fan.
2) Put a duct on it.
3) Shape the outlet of the duct into a ring.
4) ???
5) Profit.

If you buy one of these, you win a prize.

I would agree, but I still think that's paying Dyson a bit of a compliment. I'd call them the Monster Cable of vacuums and fans.

  • You want something aesthetically pleasing
  • You have children or pets
  • You hate money
  • You need a quiet fan...actually no, just get a Vornado then
  • You hate wind buffeting...actually no, this is just OMGOMGOMGPONIESOMG PONIES!

For everybody else, you should just get a variable speed Vornado or Vornado-clone.

Man, I don't know. Everyone claims that Vornados are quiet and all, but the small Vornado I have is easily louder on low than my big box fan is on medium, and it moves a whole lot less air.

The Vornado is also noisier than another similarly-sized fan I have, of course, but it's tough to say which of those moves more air--probably the Vornado.

I am an avid Dyson vacuum user and when these were first announced I was very interested and went to try them out locally. The positive is that it does produce a smooth, gentle breeze that is much more comfortable than the standard fan which is much choppier. However, the breeze is only effective within about 5 feet, outside of that it drops off too much to really provide much sensation. So it needs to be placed fairly close which leads to the second problem. Because the air is sucked in from the small base through even smaller pinholes, there is a very loud, high pitch suction noise. To me, this noise is too loud to sleep with and is very noticeable.

So basically you trade out the visible blades, smooth breeze, and modern looks for noise and efficiency. If they were maybe $100 I might reconsider but there are just too many trade-offs to be priced this high ($50 and I would definitely get one or two for various applications but not as a 100% replacement for standard fans).

I'd like to see one of these gizmos in person.

some one said there is fan blades in the base of this this thing. makes me wonder how it works.

i was under the impression that it was some sort of new innovative bit of technology that there was no way to build it economically in my shop but now I am thinking maybe it's just an over priced chunk of plastic.

I wonder if the fan in the base is powering the ring by drawing air out of those vents?

After reading the Gizmodo review on this thing, I realized my vanity almost had me convinced to fork over $150 for a fan that is undoubtedly good looking, but that's about it. If your going to buy this, you have to look at it as an investment in art as much as function.

Consumer Reports damned it for not moving any air (because it didn't have a fan, of all things).

NewMaster wrote:The hand dryer looks cool, but doesn't work any better. This fan doesn't work better either. There's no buffeting air, yes, but that's because it barely moves air at all. Like all Dyson products, you pay more for no more functionality. In my opinion, of course.

I am in Afghanistan and all of the Dining Facilities are installing the hand driers. They work pretty well but I wonder how cost effective they are compared to the good old recycled paper towel...

Ok, I'm gonna share something with all the people who really think this neat looking thing has no blades...
in the "Base Unit" as it is called...there's a fan.
Sorry if that ruins it for everybody.
It looks just like a regular fan that you find in your average PC box computer.
It's kind of like Bose tries to act like they invented sound and eardrums and then proceeded to patent the laws of physics, but actually make really expensive little speakers that sound like other sound equipment a third of the cost -- hence the acronym B.O.S.E. as Better Off w/Something Else or Buy Other Sound Equipment.
This Dyson is quiet though, and does blow a gentle breeze, but there's some nice "Air Movers"(not fans) out there that you could get three or more of for the price --
may not look as cool I suppose. (but it's got a fan!)

Yeah, those things are totally no-nonsense. First time I used one, I ignored the sign that said to put your hands in from the sides, and stuck them in through the top. The thing turned on instantly and blew the water off my hands (still only half-inserted) and into my face. I think my hands were dry in about 3 seconds. The Dyson model isn't bad, but it's not remotely as aggressive.

I just looked this up - these things are not complicated at all - i see no justification for teh cost.

i thought originally that this thing had some sort of slightly ribbed piece that spun inside the big . wrong.

the Big O is just a tube cleverly shaped with an exhaust pointed in the direction you want the air to move.

http://retellect.hubpages.com/hub/Revolutionary-Bladeless-Fan

the tube is shaped like a plane wing and the air is forced out of a small slit all the way around the plane wings under side creating a drawing effect.

nothings is spinning other the Traditional FAN that is powered by a Brushless motor in the base.

this exact same thing could be powered on a bigger scale remotely, Like and A/c unit outside your house could force air into a pvc that directed the air flow to a "RING" in say the same place you might have an attic fan.

DOH! I might try this out. maybe i will get filthy stinking rich and get sued by Dyson, i would then counter sue for getting jammed on this darn vacuum i bought.

Did anyone actually complain about the airflow from conventional fans being 'choppy' before someone at Dyson decided it was a problem? It seems that a main selling point of their fan is based on a problem I've never heard anyone complain about. I must admit that this is the best price I've seen this sold for, but I'd still rather buy 4 nice Vornados for the same price.

Even if money were no object, the fundamental problem with this is the same of all such fans: They move less air at higher velocity. What one needs, whenever possible, is the large blades of a ceiling-fan.

Then there is the consideration of cost: Depending on how much one is using refrigerated air already, it may be more sensible to put the money toward the electricity and receive the added benefit of cooling the entire room or house. Remember, fans don't actually lower the air temperature, they only offer evaporative cooling through the moisture on the skin.
