Well, I'm definitely cancelling my order. In addition to the lifetime maps not being part of the package, I also just noticed that this thing doesn't have an SD slot. My old TomTom does and I had planned to swap the card into this one. My son reminded me that the old one also has bluetooth which I always use when renting a car. That's an important feature to me because my car at home does have bluetooth. Anyway, I'm out on this one.

Here's were my confusion is... If you look at Tom Tom's website, they show this unit as having lifetime map updates.

Look here...
http://www.tomtom.com/en_us/products/car-navigation/xxl-550-series/#tab:maps

I want one bad, I don't care about the traffic updates but the map updates would seal the deal on this one.

Not sure if the refurb thing factors in on this as well.

So it's been a little over an hour since they changed the description and took away the "Lifetime Traffic and Maps" line. Still no email about cancelling the order. Those order confirmation emails make it to you lickety split tho....

I only paid $80 for a Tom Tom 4 quarter year long update last year.

the description still lists the USB traffic receiver - is this correct or not? I purchased for this feature, AFTER the lifetime map update correction, but if there's no traffic either I'm not sure I want to stay in...

I'm disappointed in my fellow Wooters' stance that Woot is somehow the Big Bad Wolf and trying to take your money through a bait and switch or some other dubious action.

It was a mistake, folks...one that Woot has corrected. They've stated you will get an email with the option to cancel your order IF and only IF you ordered before the description was updated.

folks, maybe it's time to let up a little bit on the woot! staff. I have bought hundreds of things from them, and they've all been accurately described in some of the best copy writing anywhere. it is very unusual for them to make an error.

Woot! staff seem to be friendly, funny and competent people (or possibly an amazing artificial intelligence program). People like this are hard to find. (TMOT: I'm a small business owner). I personally would like to cut them a generous amount of Slack (TM J.R "Bob" Dobbs).

they said they made a mistake, and they said they would take care of it. what more could you want?

Fun, nasty fun.

But you'll never find your nasty fun without this Tom Tom (club) GPS! Far better than the Talking Heads GPS, not as nice as the No Talking Just Head GPS, but that isn't legal in the U.S., except in Nevada outside of Clark and Washoe counties.

the main purpose i bought this Tom Tom is so i don't have to go to Map Quest and print off directions. I don't live in a big city and mostly will use it to find a business or friends house.

Will I honestly need the Lifetime maps for what I use it for?

What is all the fuss? tomtom has a map update service for under 20 GBP (british pound), you get 4 updates each quarter for 1 year. that seems to be much cheaper than having to buy a new map and install it. am i misssing something here?

i did see somewhere in a link that the TM version was under $100 US. but for the $45 difference i can have updates for 2 years. seems reasonable.

if this one has lifetime maps...and it can be confirmed, i'd definitely be in for at least 1 unit.

I picked up 2 of the Ease's. I had the same problem "device is past the time period to be eligible for updates" for 30 day guarantee. You have to call Tomtom 866-486-6866 and get the 30 day guarantee "pushed" to your device.

But before you call-Turn on the device first and do the setup- then get tomtom home from the website (v 2.8 something now). When you plug in the device it will ask if you want to connect to the PC- say yes. then it will ask you if you have an account or do you want to create one (create it).

Also- you have to have a separate account AND e-mail for each device- so since you have 3 Ease's be prepared with 3 different e-mails when you call.

If you are getting these as gifts, you will want to update the maps before you give them out or risk giving out the device with a severely outdated map (Year or more old?). My parents previously purchased a Tomtom but waited to long and never got the map guarantee AND they are too cheap to buy the new maps. Can't say that I blame them ($30+ to update)

Last tip- They didn't ask, but I would stop short of telling them it is a refurb. If they would have asked (shouldn't they know by serial no>???) and refused to give me the 30 day map guarantee, I would have argued the point that the guarantee is written on the box and manual they sent with the device.

Truthfully, probably not as long as you are willing to live with the occasional "indirect" routing. I've got a 8 year old GPS that has never had a map upgrade, and I rarely have any issues. Just use common sense and you'll be OK.

Yeah.. at $79 each. They do have a $99 lifetime, but for $189 you can get a new TM directly from TomTom. If you want maps, this one is not worth the money.

comcruiser wrote:- Windshield mount sucks. You need two hands to adjust it, otherwise it falls off.

I agree with this comment. The Tom Tom windshield mount is a royal pain in the GPS. I travel a good deal, so the Tom Tom goes in and out of rental cars. Many times, it won't stay on the window. Plus it is more difficult to position than the Garmin or Magellan. I lent the Tom Tom to my son and he had so much trouble with it coming loose, he lost the suction cup thingy. Now the Tom Tom is dangerous as it slides around the dash. I couldn't find a suction cup replacement on their webpage so I ordered a whole mount replacement from Hong Kong!

I use a dash beanbag instead.

It still requires the dash mount of course but it puts the GPS closer to you and it's easier to move from car to car. Plus, you don't have those tell-tale rings on your windshield.
