everyone knew that the maps was very likely a misprint on woots part. Those that read the comments and participate in the discussion really have nothing to complain about. Of course there are people who don't read the discussion and may be disappointed, but they will get a refund very quickly if they ask for it.

People make mistakes, woot has always been great for me in dealing with any issue I've had with my orders (defective products, etc) I have no complaints. This unit still has the initial map update, that's good enough for me. If you know about a change in the map, you can always flag it on your tomtom and share with the community (as well as download others changes) this helps reduce the chance of it directing you down closed roads etc...

Officially got the e-mail from Woot. Still disappointed that it doesn't have lifetime maps, but I'm thinking about keeping it anyway. For being on a budget, this is still a pretty good deal. Besides, TomTom's website shows that you can buy 4 map updates for a year (one per quarter) for $20.

http://www.tomtom.com/en_gb/maps/map-update-service/

Another website has the lifetime update version for an extra $40. But as other people have said, it's refurbished and won't necessarily be good for terribly long anyway. Chances are, in another year I'll be able to get a better one with lifetime maps & traffic.

So we come bringing a change to today's listing for the TomTom XXL 550 5-Inch GPS with IQ Routes & Premium Maps. We made a mistake in the product description and it turns out today's GPS does not come with lifetime maps, lifetime traffic, and the USB Traffic Receiver.

The change was made around 8:15am, which was after you placed your order. We wanted to give you a heads up and we totally understand if you would like to cancel your order due to this change. Please let us know by Tuesday noon CST (09/20) if you would like to cancel your order, otherwise, we'll be processing your order as intended.

Also, if you have already emailed in to cancel your order- please disregard this message.

Please let us know if you have any questions or concerns.

Sincerely,
Woot Member Services

So much for our "OPTIONS" they promised... looks as if the only OPTION is to cancel your order which I will be doing ASAP...

I have placed 3 woot orders in the past month but now I will be very skeptical of any future product offerings.

I have owned a few TomToms including the TM version of this one. The devices work well enough that I would buy this one at this price even without the lifetime updates. The problem I have is that the windshield mount is a piece of junk on this one. My older, heavier one worked fine, but this one will fall for no apparent reason while driving down a smooth road. I have even tried spitting on it, but that only helps for 30 minutes or so. The suction cup is not deep enough to create adequate adhesion. Be prepared to find some other way to mount this.

I bought the XXL 540 on Woot. It will not allow searches for POI's (stores, restaurants, parks, etc.) by name. Tom-Tom service verified that this is the case. For me the unit is useless without this feature. The first time I complained they had me reload the software which resulted in the whole thing crashing. They sent me another. Every search by name comes up with "no POI found."

As I mentioned before, it's not that they made a mistake.. it's that the people that made the mistake couldn't be bothered to get out of bed to fix the mistake.. leaving many people in limbo for HOURS. They should have had this fixed as soon as it was noticed (shortly after it was posted). Why a company that posts new items at midnight lets their employees sleep while their website is wrong is beyond me.

Poor ThunderThighs was trying like crazy to get this figured out last night but apparently even employees don't have anyone to call to say that the site is false advertising. Not a good thing.

Like I said, though, the TomTom is a great easy-to-use GPS system. I would use it myself, but my girlfriend is better: she has a really good sense of direction.

Was the change "made around 8:15am"? EST or CST because I got an email that stated the change was made AFTER I ORDERED I at 8:50am EST and remember the Lifetime being still on the website after for a while after my order.

I can handle a mistake WOOT and will gladly cancel my order but don't send me a (mod edit: filters are there for a reason) email like it was my fault.

I find it pathetic, they only offer one product per day and cannot get the description correct.

Then to top it off they send an email that they will ship it anyway unless the order is canceled, with no link to cancel or instructions on how to do so.

Another 15 minutes of my life lost because of incompetent i d i o t s.

I didn't order, had no interest in the GPS in general. But why so much hate?

Think about something for a moment - Woot has been around for six-years. Let's assume there are no woot-offs and therefore sold 2190 items. I don't think I've seen a dozen incorrect descriptions in that time. That's less than 1% error.

How can you be so angry at a company that does so good to you yet suck up to companies that treat you so bad? How many of you have cancelled your cable? Your phone service? Your celluar service? I am positive their mistakes and errors well surpass 1%.

My small grief is that I didn't see a email to reply to, unless you're supposed to reply to the donotreply email. I sent my email to service (at) woot.com and got a case number confirmation they received the email. I reaped the reward of a woot error before (they shipped me 2 I only paid for one), and I have to support woot for how they handled this description error.

I am not going to assume that somebody immediately noticed the error, nor that somebody didn't want to wake up themselves (or their boss). Somebody at woot noticed an error, got the ball rolling to give us that ordered an option of cancelling the orders, and got emails out to people, all while I was sleeping myself. Thank You Woot Staff.

Nope, smart phones typically have a GPS chipset. FWIW, they will normally use whatever location technology is least resource intensive to give you your location. They work fine without 3G. I know for sure. I have development phones that have no carrier service but the GPS works fine (from just the GPS chipset).

Smart phones DO need a signal to download the maps. No cell signal no maps. The only way it will work otherwise is if you download the maps and preload them in the phones memory before hand but it's a hassle and they are very large.

Most likely the reason they waited to fix it is because the person who actually knew the details of the unit didn't get into their work until 8am. Chances are the IT group of woot get a description or part number and have to write the copy and then man the site for technical issues and moderation. This doesn't mean they know if the part number is wrong and it does have maps, or the description they were given was wrong. I'm sure an email/voicemail was left as soon as there was a question but had to wait for an answer from someone that actually knew what the product is.

So much hate for woot, because people didn't get something for nothing. This was resolved as quickly as it could be, and people were given the option of canceling their orders. It's already a great price even without the lifetime maps, that is why you come here right? For good prices? Why would this impact your future purchases from woot? Can you even name another item where they made a mistake?

Now becomes a matter of principle...

1. I was about to buy this unit until the ambiguity about lifetime maps being included came up. (Really critical on a refurb that might be 2-3 years old.)

2. Even without lifetime traffic I seriously considered buying it.

3. However, I will not reward a business that is so sloppy with their product descriptions. (The retail value of the missing features is as much as their price for the unit!)

Come on woot, you put a loss-leader out there like this - put a little effort into quality info!

As long as I get an initial free/cheap map update, I'm happy. But, the real loss for me was the traffic.

So here's my question:

I have an RDS cable for my old Nuvi - any chance it might work on this TomTom (same mini-USB connector)? Has anyone tried it before?

Mistakes happen, and Woot has addressed them. Perhaps not as quickly or gracefully as they could have. Still, if you're only selling ONE item each day, you really have little excuse for such a major flub in the product description. Let's hope Woot learned their lesson. I for one, will remain a loyal customer.

Did you ever think the error may not have been totally on woot. They could be sent info from tom-tom or whoever they made this deal with to put these up. Could have been a refurb company. They may have got some wrong info. They also didn't ignore it last night, they tried to get info. Most likely they had to wait till the company they did the deal with opened today. That was why there was a delay.

Of course, even if you buy this TomTom... you'd be buying it from woot... yay local business!

Somewhere down the line, by refusing to buy something which might contribute money in some way shape or form to another country ultimately hurts the USA, by either resulting in the loss of jobs locally (sales people can't sell stuff that people refuse to buy) or by hurting our import business which, in turn, weakens our position to export our goods to other countries and, thus, profit from them.

They need a signal to tell you where you are.. meaning they need to be within a range of a cell tower to show you map data.

Lots of this country is still not 3g/data, or even out of cell network range. Go out to the central midwest, or northern states, and you'll quickly fall out of useful range.. and the map function on your phone goes poof.

And then you never find your pot-o-woot gold..

Not sure why a signal is needed for map data. When I put in an address into Google Navigation for directions, it preloads the map data... so even if I have no cell range for the entire trip, the map data is still there.

There might be a situation where going on a 15 mile drive through a 15-mile stretch of no cell towers might pose some sort of problem, but I would suspect this is a very rare thing indeed.
