Its removeable, theres 2 screws at the bottom and one at the top where the microsd card slot is, a small plastic wedge was all i used to pop the case off, battery is pretty huge but can be changed out fairly easy

I have SIPDroid and Google Voice installed and working. But I can't use them in tandem. Any suggestions out there as to how to have these work together?

According to everything I've been reading online (and the fact that one of my Korean students has the 4" version), the Galaxy Player is the name for the Korean release (and perhaps other countries), and the Galaxy s WiFi is the world wide release.

I just got mine, the post office delivered it two doors down. I was eyeing up the package on their mailbox all day saying, "i wonder if thats my tablet" and sure enough it was.

This thing is awesome. Im usually very picky about what gadgets i like, but this one is very nice. Overall I am very pleased.

Any idea if we will see gingerbread for this anytime soon?

Just updating on my camera issue. I was using Camera Fun Pro which was free app of the day on Amazon once.

It turns out that the app the Galaxy came with is just fine. I was testing out business card shots, and they were all blurry except for the ones from that app. Given enough determination, I will eventually sift through every menu and find the macro function. (*facepalm* And it was on the first screen in the settings...)

The camera does work well. Ignore my earlier comment about that. And it has a full array of other options too, just like a real camera.

For six days my delivery date was showing as Sept. 26. Then at 6PM tonight the delivery date just disappeared entirely. Oy. Hope it eventually gets here, can't wait!!

I'm getting confused. The link showed a protector/case but the protector had the cutouts for the hdmi port and antenna port which only exist on the Korean Galaxy. The unit they had it on wasn't the Korean verison and had exposed areas for no reason which isn't a big deal except for the opening near the corner. That could be a nasty place to have a cutout you don't need of you make a drop of the unit.

darknight34 wrote:Is the usb cable proprietary? I was only able to get the device recognized with the Kies software when I used the included cable, not with my generic micro usb cable

No, but's a microUSB so you can't just attach an external hard drive if that would even work. I have mostly miniUSB cables laying around so I'm going to try to find a very small micro to mini adapter so I don't need to have just a cable for this device.

I still think that menu where it says battery is being used by the cell radio is interesting. I'd like to know more about that and what is going on there. It also suggests switching to flight mode in areas with no signal.

You can put it into flight mode which nixes all signals but it'll stay in flight mode if afterwards you turn on the wifi or gps. Bluetooth cannot be turned on in flight mode.

Also learned while looking around that I can control the screen brightness quickly by running my finger horizontally along the top of the screen to pop it into brightness mode.

Pretty neat what one can do with devices like this. I can even hear local police chatter with a simple app.

Speaker out is strong and you can actually hear the stereo separation.

The Google Street view is pretty amazing stuff and works smoothly. I like the way they draw the street name right on the road and it stays there no matter what angle you look around at. It looks likes it's painted there.

Ok, that's what those indentations are at the bottom. I didn't notice they were stickers covering the screws.

I thought that was curious too about the cell signal. Mine cell standby is using 27%. Wifi is using 2%. What is it measuring? Bluetooth and GPS aren't listed. Don't some people complain about those sucking up battery?

BEST WOOT WEEK EVER, first this android diamond, and i still got two HP 25" LED screens shipping!!

wanted to share some news... woot!

root, takes less than 10min...

a) settings -> applications -> development -> usb debugging
b) login to the appstore and pre-download: apkatcher, root explorer, adfree and more...
c) on my win7 pc browse to http://www.junefabrics.com/android/download.php and download a GREAT copy of PDANet which will properly install the drivers for THIS PHONE! (these were the only found working, and i tried them all...) No need to actually run this app, just install it, follow the warnings and disregard any scarry messages, these are fine believe it or not!
d) go to http://shortfuse.org and locate, download and extract SuperOneClick
e) connect your phone to the usb, run superoneclick, click root, wait
f) power cycle phone
g) run superuser, root explorer, and adblock, and update su etc.. it all works.
h) enjoy!

this device really makes a difference, wifi is ALL I NEED, and I will actually embrace MORE of what android has to offer BECAUSE this device is NOT A PHONE. great product, keep the good stuff goin!

p.s. some AV programs will remove/damage the superonclick payload file, so take due notice and disable your AV!

Does anyone know a video chat application that actually works?? I've downloaded Skype - doesn't work at all. Fring - I can see the other person but from mine, it only shows the rear camera, not the front camera. It's really frustrating.

Help?

Got my device sometime during the day(I work mids so I sleep during the day). The Postman used a rubber band to hang the woot box form my apartment doorknob.

Opened it up, plugged it in, was able to start it fine. So far app downloads appear to be working fine. I will *probably* put my music on it the same way I put it on my Droid Bionic...with the Amazon MP3 app(since i have most of my music on my Amazon cloud drive anyway).

Like a bunch of other people I see that the North American versions are being released with Gingerbread. Hopefully this version(presumably the Latin American one) gets a update.

I have put the credentials for my Sipgate number into Line 1 for Sipdroid. I have my Google Voice set up so that if someone calls my Google Voice number, then my Sipgate number will also ring. For outgoing calls, I use a browser to get to my Google Voice Inbox. I have it set so calls will connect using my Sipgate number. I have my Google contacts right there so it is just a matter of selecting a contact and initiating the call. Google Voice will first call you via Sipdroid and when you pick up, it will then connect you to the called party. Actually it is not as tedious as it sounds and it works.

I have tried but failed on both my Win7 64-bit and my WinXp systems. When I connect the device via USB, Kies starts to connect, but the little pair of circular arrows just continues to rotate forever, and I never make a Kies connection.

On the device, It shows "USB connected" and if I hit the button "Connect USB Storage", then I can see my SD card and some device storage on my Windows Explorer. So the device will connect as a mass storage device, but I can't get it to connect to the Kies program.

I'm new to this stuff but I see a setting that may help you for the Kies thing.

It's in Settings>Wireless and network>USB settings

You can set the Galaxy to Samsung Kies, Media Player or Mass storage

yep, that's the setting alright that permits connection when you choose "Samsung Kies"

the only advantage I can see Kies gets us though is a check of firmware and my unit claims it has the latest from Samsung.

I don't carry a lot of contacts online so synching not such a big deal to me. I'll just type them in, and use USB for file transfers

I tried using SipDroid, but the call quality is terrible. My voice is very choppy and people can't hear me. I can hear them, though. I tried using both the mic on the phone and using an earpiece/mic unit from my cellphone. The latter helped, but it seems to be a data transmission problem or something. I can't figure it out.

You're a Hero! It helped by rebooting both, and starting Kies first, before plugging in the USB. No XP systray icon displays. After all that, Froyo 2.2.2 was already the latest firmware. No need for Kies. I prefer the USB Mass Storage mode to drag/drop files. I unchecked the 3 XP background programs in msconfig. /begin Rocky theme music.

Successfully installed Kies (Win7 32-bit) and checked for firmware update.

None to be had at this time.

Also, I am seeing about 10-15% better battery life when watching videos (full brightness, full volume, wifi off, GPS off) when compared to my 7" Tabs (1 T-Mobile with Overcome ROM and 1 Spring with rooted Gingerbread). Watched 3 hours of video and battery went from full to to 63%. So the 8 hour video spec seems reasonable.

The 5.0 definitely has GPS, but it is as slow to lock as the original Galaxy S phones, I have not tried any of those fixes yet.

I have the same problem. I tried different audio settings and using the included wired headset, but the call quality is terrible. So Sipdroid doesn't seem to be a viable option on this device.

Looks like the Samsung Galaxy Player is a different product than the Galaxy S Wifi--the Galaxy S Wifi has a hardware home button, and the Galaxy player's home button appears to be capacitive. Mostly the same, but there's that difference.
That is, unless I'm mistaken.

I have tethered with BT using the DUN bluetooth profile. If you hope to do the same with this Samsung, I think you are out of luck. I'm pretty sure the DUN profile is not supported.

However, I was surprised that my old Think Outside Stowaway bluetooth keyboard works. I got it many years ago for my HP iPAQ rx5915 which this new Samsung replaces.

I recd both of mine right on time on the 26th. Pretty cool devices. I ordered a couple of cases and screen protectors on ebay and they are coming from China. These are presents for my kids and I hope that they wont break them before the cases get here. I am getting ready to order a couple of 16 gb sd cards for them. They are selling for around $250 on ebay right now. My kids better hope they don't make me mad between now and when I decide to give them to them!

Got the unit right on time...however, just a note...had trouble connecting to my wireless router the second time (first time was ok).

Checked for support answers online. This unit (YP-G70CW) is not a USA model. Sold in Russia and Switzerland (gee...made in China though!). Samsung USA will not support. Trying to talk to my pals in the UK to see if they know the answer. Hope it works...Cheerio!

Hmmm...with that being said, maybe I should put my two on ebay, make around $75 ea on them and then buy the USA models when they are available on 10/16? That way I would have the USA models for around $189 each. What to do, what to do!

Just got mine in the mail today too, and the origins of the device actually seem a bit more mysterious than that. Earlier this year, the Galaxy S Wifi 4.0 was released in Russia, and the 5.0 in Switzerland. This would seem to be neither, however.

The packaging is in Spanish, and the included cable fits North American and some South American plugs; Russia, Switzerland and South Korea all use a different plug (Europlug) with round connectors. The only references I can find to product code (YP-G70CW/TTT) online are Portuguese sites, and they seem to be referring to a product available in Paraguay... though curiously, no Paraguayan sites, which would be in Spanish. To add another odd wrinkle, Paraguay also uses the round-pronged Europlug.

And this all adds up to... I still don't know where these were originally destined for. Probably either Mexico, or one of the countries along the northern coast of South America.

My head hurts a little.

I guess it doesn't matter really were it was for. As long as we can get the updates like for gingerbread and etc, it should be fine. Plus we have the year warranty from Woot in case the thing stops working.
