I hope to get the update, too. There's some apps that say they're not compatible with this device, but they're for Android 2.3 and higher. I want a graphic equalizer app but they all seem to only work with 2.3 and up.

Mine is usually in sleep mode but I only recently noticed the home button will also wake it up. I doubt the release versions capacitive home button does that.

When I bring it out of the slip case I'm using, it's less awkward to jab the home button than to find the power button. Especially since I seem to always pull it out upside down.

Ooh, thank you. Yes, that's good.

Mine is usually asleep. It's only off when it needs a reboot, which happens sometimes. But then it's off and immediately back on again.

Love my unit! However, I can not install any Speech Engine (Svox, Ivona). They will show up as installed but I can not check them. I have two other Android's and Svox and Ivona work great with them. Of course, PICCO tts works but after getting used to others I rarely use it. Also,if I turn the unit off several of my Apps get "lost" and I have to renter them.

I've noticed that apps which I have moved from device to SD card (in settings, Manage Applications) will not remain on my home pages if I fully power down and back up. If I move them back to device, then they will stick. This seems to be a bug to me, but maybe someone can argue that it is a feature somehow. Maybe you are seeing the same problem.

So far I'm really liking this. The screen is great, it's very responsive, and the battery seems to last a long time (except when I'm playing a game on it :P). I ordered a case and some screen protectors on eBay, and they got here after about a week and a half. Those also seem to be pretty good quality, especially considering how little they cost. Here are the links in case anybody is interested:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/130510296843?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1439.l2649

http://www.ebay.com/itm/160611286984?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1439.l2649

There are a few extra cutouts on the case, but otherwise it seems like it would do a reasonable job of protecting it from small bumps and scratches. The only thing I don't like about the screen protectors is that there isn't a cutout for the front camera; however, I tested it with the stock camera app and it still works fine. In fact, I actually quite like these protectors. Very little friction and minimal smudging.

I do hope we get a 2.3 update on these, official or no, but having to stick with 2.2 wouldn't be a deal breaker for me. I think I actually prefer the hard home button, because it would be harder to press by mistake than a capacitive one.

A couple of things that have me (slightly) concerned: the battery charging issue is a little weird (mine only charges to 80% without bump charging, which would hurt the battery in the long run), but possibly understandable. Maybe the device only lets itself charge to 80% initially to prevent too much wear on the battery. From what I've read, keeping a Li-Ion battery at full charge is really bad for it.

Another thing that has me a bit more concerned is the amount of RAM. I was pretty sure these were supposed to have 512 MB, but mine is only showing 381 MB in the task manager. Anyone else noticing this? Could the task manager just not be reporting the full amount for some reason?

Finally, I've noticed several other people have noticed how there's apparently a cellular radio using battery power... I've noticed that too, and it doesn't stop even in airplane mode. I have my screen brightness way down, and it currently says cell standby 76% and screen only 13%. I wonder if that's just the OS not knowing what to do when there isn't one, or if there is secretly one in there waiting to be used... or turned off to get some truly awesome battery life. :-)

The case I have looks the same, but in an opaque version. The extra cut-outs aren't an issue to me.

The image on that auction looks like there's a cut-out for the front camera.

My battery charges to 100% and lets me know when it's finished by beeping. Others have mentioned this before and other issues. Guess I got one of the good ones.

I didn't notice the RAM -- I didn't look -- but I did notice the memory should be 8GB and it says 5GB. Someone said it might be partitioned or some of it reserved for apps. I don't know about the RAM though.

That cell battery power drives me mad. I try not to look at the battery usage screen. If it's telling me that the battery is using hardware that shouldn't be in it and hopefully isn't, then why would I trust what it says?

Give the battery display one more press.
Settings > About device > Battery Use > Cell Standby (press it).

Our "Time without signal" should always be 100%. One might conclude "Time on" indicates how much battery usage our cell (tablet) has been on or in standby mode.

Since Display has the most battery usage, I've set brightness at 25%, and use an all black unanimated wallpaper.
I'm currently (pun) evaluating JuiceDefender and Screebl (free versions).

I wonder if the "cell standby" is actually some kind of stand-by usage for VoIP, even though it uses Wi-Fi and not a cell radio. I have the Groove IP app, and if I leave it open and running in the background, the "cell standby" usage rises from the usual 10% to 30%. I'm not sure why it uses even 10% when GrooveIP isn't running (and did so before I installed the app), but it is curious. The device does seem to be set up for phone usage, because it has the small phone speaker on the front that engages when one uses a VoIP app.

I know I kind of asked this earlier but please consider this one last ditch attempt by an android Clever Mask.

I'm getting random home screen resets, restarts and shutdowns/lockups. By that I mean.

Home Screen Resets: Device returned to the default homescreen or unlock screen, you can see in the task bar it rescan internal external memory and media etc. Things like Skype reconnect.

Restarts: Device can be sitting idle when it just displays the Samsung Logo, the power on animation and then the home screen reloads.

Shutdowns/lockups: Generally this is just a black screen, pressing the home or power button does nothing. I have to hold down the power button for 5-10 seconds and then it'll boot up as described in the restart above.

Things I've tried.

* Factory reset (power + VolUp).
* I have no weird apps installed or running, mainly G+,gmail, facebook, twitter, skype with a couple of ebook readers.
* I have two 16gb SD cards one class 4 the other 10. Both see the same stability issues

Basically I'm resigned (painfully) to send this back for a refund and just want to throw out one last plea for help if there is anything I have missed or can run (some sort of crash log analyser) to confirm if this really is a hardware issue that's beyond fixing.

Thanks in advance.

BTW - if I cash this in I'm thinking of getting Lenovo A1, anyone got any thoughts of those? Alternative in the same price range?

I have that happen sometimes when apps lock up. I've wound up uninstalling apps because of it. However, once I removed the problem app, it went back to normal. Hopefully someone here has ideas about troubleshooting.

As far the Lenovo, that was one I was considering before the Woot offer for this one. I didn't think they'd be out this soon or that they were going to offer the $199 model here (initially, reports that only the 16 GB model for $249 was being released in the US). I have a Lenovo ThinkPad and I've been very happy with it. Lenovo has a good reputation for computers and hopefully they also make good tablets as well. I'd go for that model if I wanted a 7" tablet rather than a Kindle Fire at the same price. It has the two cameras versus none on the Fire, and it also has GPS (I don't think the Fire has that, either). The Lenovo is also about $80 or more cheaper than most of the other name brand 7" tablets out there.

+1 on reinstalling apps. Sounds simplistic but it's the first thing I try on all my android devices. It usually solves the problem.

Yeah, being sort of new to Android I'm just not really sure if this is a matter of toleration people have or if my device is really up the pokey.

I've removed a lot of apps all I've got on there now is the following.

Flash Player 11
Amazon Kindle
Amazon AppStore
Google Docs
Facebook
Gmail
Google+
KeePassDroid
Google Maps
Google Marketplace
Moon+ Reader
Skype
Twitter
YouTube

I'd appreciate it if anyone has experience with any of those causing restart/lockup problems.

I've also removed the SD card in case both are causing issues. Is there a way to test the SD cards for this?

Again, I'm sorry for bugging everyone here with this but I'm desperate to keep the galaxy if I can only be sure it's a app or SD card I need to kick out the door instead.

Edit: so I left it on page 2 and switched it off and it just reloaded to the home screen. Removed Facebook, Skype, KeePassDroid. Sunk further into depression.

I wouldn't get my hopes up just yet. The Galaxy S WiFi released in the UK has a different CPU, a TI OMAP rather than the Samsung Hummingbird found in ours, and I suspect the difference is large enough to require separate software.

Getting a bit of a run around with Samsung. I contacted the Latin American support to ask about the Gingerbread update, and got directed to US email support instead.

US email support directed me to US Business Support, which then directed me back to Latin American support.

I'm now waiting from a response back from Latin American support.

On another note, everyone here's probably noticed that you only have 381mb of ram. You actually have the advertised 512mb, but 128mb is reserved for the graphics chipset.

Also, Antivirus really isn't required for an Android phone if you're not downloading dodgy or pirated apps.

Also: For people using this as an MP3 player, you might notice the high end of the spectrum to sound a bit muffled. This is a problem with almost all Galaxy S devices. To fix it, in the Music player, hit the equalizer, go to User 1, and then to Clarity and Upscaler. Slide the Clarity slider all the way up to 2.

The difference is dramatically better.

I agree. I tried a couple of different free apps for playing music because I'd read good things about their capabilities, but none of them had graphic equalizers. I went back to the stock app and discovered it did have that feature. It has a number of settings, but the customization with the sliders and the clarity and upscaler features (there's also a bass boost) made a huge difference. It sounds much better through headphones and also when played through my car stereo.

Lots of good info around here - Thanks! I have been enjoying using and figuring mine out so far.

FYI: I noticed that Amazon is now listing this as to be released on 10/16/2011:

Samsung Galaxy 5.0 Android MP3 Player for $266.14

This looks to have the "soft" home button as mentioned so ours was probably the first generation product for the US market which Woot was able to get for us at the nice price.

Thanks Woot!

Custom fit, went on like buddha, only one extra cutout for antenna on top right, no HDMI cutout on bottom, custom cuts for back speakers and camera. Feels slightly "grippy" but looks great and changes the color to black. Can't beat the price.

Well, I am on my THIRD replacement of these from Woot and going for a Fourth.

The First got stolen in transit right out of the box, The second one had a touch screen failure on the right side (vertical stripe area inactive) and this one has a stripe in the middle of the screen where when you move your finger from left to right, it jumps BACKWARDS for a bit and then continues to the right.

I am wondering if Samsumg dumped some B stock onto Woot and whether or not Woot knew. I must say, cheers to Woot, who HAVE quickly replaced them, so far, but this is getting old.

Anyway - you might want to use one of the screen test apps to check your touch screens.

A little disappointed that it isn't compatible with yahoo mail app (only the general Yahoo app)and the only launcher that it can use is launcher pro (no to ADW and Go launcher). I hope there aren't too many more apps that I am accustomed to using that it can't use. Otherwise I really like using the device. Looking forward to testing the GPS via Sygic.

So, now that I've got my memory card in the device I'm running into a problem. I like the iTunes like experience of a program that can auto sync and organize media on the device. I played with doubleTwist, found it to be very lacking. Songbird looked nice, but was buggy and would only create 44 song playlist, which doesn't work well for a master sync list. MediaMonkey seems to be the best overall experience, and everything was fine until I synced things to the card, and only 3 albums and the all my podcast showed up in the music player, despite all music being playable on the playlist, or in the media manager. I've tried forcing a media rescan, which did nothing. So, any advice, or do I go back to drag and drop?
