So I managed to successfully update my Samsung Galaxy Player 5.0 to android 2.3.5, using Odin 1.3(I haven't checked if it works with later versions of Odin). The link the the ROM that I used is down below.

Happy flashing!

Note: Flashing will probably void your warranty, and I'm not liable if something goes wrong during your flash

Full instructions for those that need them:
Required files:
* Odin 1.3(http://www.multiupload.com/4JLU4QHUV7 )
* The 2.3.5 Firmware( https://rapidshare.com/files/3318893540/YP-G70_XET_1_20111007110204.zip)

Process:
* Download the required files
* Extract Odin 1.3 into a folder of your choosing
* Extract the firmware, again, into a folder of your choosing
* Click "Odin3 v1.3.exe" from inside the folder that you extracted Odin 1.3 to
* Power off the Samsung YP-G70
* Press and hold both the Volume down button and the power button until a yellow triangle appears with the words 'Downloading'
* Connect the Samsung YP-G70 to your computer via USB cable
* Click the "PDA" button inside of Odin, and then select the extracted firmware
* Click the Start button, and Odin will start flashing the firmware to your device
* Wait until Odin displays a green "PASS" sign, and then wait for your device to restart.
* You are now running Android 2.3.5, enjoy.

Impressive. Daring. (cheers, applause, confetti & hero music)
I'm enjoying our brief moment of leading edge technology,
with the ideal pocket form factor, price, and no data plan.
Why risk the brick?
We are already on the road less traveled,
which may have dragons, and we are crunchy.

I took the plunge and it seemed to work fine, although some change in colors on the device seems to odd. The notification area that you pull down from top has a background that is all dark now, and the weather app information that appears there is in dark lettering now so I can't read it. The GroovIP notification is in white colors so that is fine.

Otherwise, everything seems to working fine.

BUT is ad-hoc supported???

I probably will update anyhow because i'm impatient and ready to see what gingerbread can bring. But without ad-hoc my uses for my beloved Sammy are gone. I'm rooted with wpa_supplicant and working great... I can't lose that

Thoughts?

Just playing around with stuff to test, and I noticed I cannot turn on or modify BlueTooth settings. I don't use Bluetooth, so I am curious about whether there is something I am doing wrong or whether there have changes as a result of the firmware.

Good to know that its working for you.

As far as the color change goes, that comes from the 2.3 system itself, rather than the rom. You can see that the notification bar is darker(on the nexus series) here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e2Df4kX6Wpk

As far as bluetooth goes, mine seems to be working fine(I can turn it on and off), but I don't have any bluetooth devices to test it with :/

Never mind. I had it in flight mode, which disables bluetooth.

For those who rooted your devices, it appears you will need to do it again if you do the firmware update.

Yeah, superclick 2.1.1. craps out after the message "Running rageagainstthecage..."

I see people at the XDA forum are saying they are having problems rooting gingerbread on the device as well.

So for now ginger is one way trip?
Any speed penalty?
Did it fix the skype camara issue?
Please, we need a complete report of what was possible and impossible, before and after.

don't use skype; but my voip apps now work correctly, had sound crashes with the froyo; use nettalk, csipsimple, and obion. device seems quicker. all wireless shows weaker signal, but works as before. this inside my house, will check at tougher spots tomorrow to see if there is a difference. the gps is must faster to lock on. still cannot use bluetooth headset like before. common problem with these devices, no kernel support for bluetooth headset profiles.

I am not a Skype user, but I installed, setup up an account and ran the video test I found here:

I see my ugly mug when making the test call and the webcam of the street on the receiving end, so I assume it works as expected.

I did the Gingerbread update. I wasn't going to, but I downloaded all the software and out of curiousity did the power down/volume down/power up thing, and got the notification that "download is starting, do not turn off the device." Even though I wasn't downloading at the time. I was so afraid of ruining my player that I got out the USB cable, attached it to the computer, and flashed it to my machine. Darn if it didn't work. If I can do it, anyone can. It changes the look of things like the bar with WiFi, GPS, and Bluetooth. It now also has annoying tapping sound effects when I type, which it didn't before. I'd like to know how to turn those off. I'm also not sure if the market will let me download apps made for Gingerbread since the device may still show as incompatible. I'll have to do some exploring. So far, so good.

One thing it's doing: GrooveIP is not working well with the Gingerbread update. It had started working perfectly with Froyo a couple of weeks ago; now with Gingerbread, my voice has a lot of stutter and echo, to the point it's almost garbled. I tried it out first by calling the answering machine; if I had called someone, they probably would have hung up from not being to understand me. Adjusting the settings didn't help the problem. So, that's not good.

GPS is working much faster, as people have reported. The Android Market also recognizes that the firmware has been updated to 2.3, so a few apps I couldn't get before I can get now, including graphic equalizer apps. I tried a couple of them, but neither worked as well as the EQ on the stock music player. Oh, well. There are some apps that are still incompatible with this device, but it must not be related to the Android version. For example, Hulu Plus works with versions of Android 2.2 and above, but it still won't work with the new firmware.

Well crap... I updated to 2.3.5 and it's going swimmingly, except that auto-rotation doesn't work on my home screen anymore. Everything else is great, though. Any ideas?

If it is running faster then it is worth it, more capabilities is a bonus, now we need to find all that might gotten lost.

The homework for you flashing adventurers, is to confirm MCG11's GrooveIP audio problem.
Test Bluetooth with different headsets, when we got this thing, earlier in the thread, someone found a list of "compatible headsets" for this device. We need to make sure if the Galaxy 5.0 can use Bluetooth under the new F/W. I know that at least one person had a bluetooth headset working on this thing in froyo.

Maybe now, one of you could try if the flashlight apps are working with the LED light, as they are supposed to. All the ones I try in froyo can't use the LED flash, even when they say they do.

Wow, so much to ask but since there is no way back to froyo, we must know if anything stops working before the rest of us jump in.

Hm, it doesn't on mine, either. I went into the setting for auto-rotation and toggled it off and back on, and still no dice. Auto-rotation works in apps, just not on the home screen. I'll have to do some research tomorrow. I found out that the new keyboard sounds are a peculiarity of Gingerbread, too, and there were suggestions on how to turn them off. I couldn't find out a way to turn them off in the Samsung keyboard, but there is a setting in the Swype keyboard to turn the sounds off.

Another quirk is the fact that it installed a new FM radio and didn't delete the shortcut that was on my first homepage. So, when I went to hit the shortcut, it said "App not installed." I went to the app list itself, and there was a brand new icon for the FM radio, that now looks like a radio instead of the little Android dude. I dragged that to the home page and deleted the old shortcut. It also required me to scan the local stations and set it up all over again. I assume it's some kind of upgrade over the old app, but I'm not sure what the differences are except for the icon and the interface looking a tiny bit different than before (but basically the same).

This may be a stupid question, but did you check if auto rotation is enabled? You didn't mention if it was.

Don't know about the Gingerbread, but in froyo there is that drop down drawer with the wifi, bluetooh, GPS, Sound and Autorotation toggle buttons. Look into that.

Hmmm... looking around, it seems that this newer version of Touchwiz simply doesn't auto-rotate. Not a bug but a feature. Bummer, since I generally prefer to use the device in landscape.

There are a few mods around that purport to add auto-rotate functionality back in, but they seem a bit sketchy.

Bluetooth does work with Gingerbread. I have a compatible headset (Samsung 3500) and it worked in Froyo and still does. I also am still able to pair it with my Bluetooth-enabled laptop. I can send files to my device from my laptop via Bluetooth, and also play music.

As far as the auto-rotation thing, I did toggle the button on and off in the settings and it didn't help. It is only on the homescreen pages. Every where else, auto rotation works fine.

Fair question, but yes, I did check if auto-rotation was enabled, both through the notifications drawer and the system settings. It's working in everything else (including another launcher I installed to check), but not in the Touchwiz homescreen.

I was the one who posted a link to Compatible bluetooth headsets.

It was not an official list. It was a merchant's site, listing those headsets the merchant claimed were compatible with a Samsung Galaxy Tab. I am hoping that those headsets also are compatible with our device.

Another poster claims to have successfully paired a Samsung 3500 headset, which is not on the list. I have successfully paired a Samsung HM3700, which is on the list.

There is a $20 rebate on the Samsung HM3700 headset, available through November 15. The rebate form is available through Newegg.com, but I do not see anything on that form requiring a purchase through that merchant.

Please be aware that the app that exists for the HM3700, FreeSync App for Samsung bluetooth, receives generally poor reviews, and, in any event, is listed as not compatible with our device.

One Samsung customer service representative recommended that I look for headsets that support the A2DP 1.2 profile, whatever that means. Another Samsung customer service representative recommended that I look for handsets which support the SPP 1.1 profile.

In response to another post, I have successfully installed the app called "Tiny Flashlight + LED" to my device which is still running Froyo. The app is free and appears to work fine in all its variations.

I haven't jumped to Gingerbread yet and still running Froyo. Are you all saying that BT functionality is sketchy with this device for both? Because I use a Plantronics Voyager Pro+ and music runs great thru it. I cannot use the mic for anything however. Is THIS the BT non-functionality everyone is complaining about?

Also, I am running Go Launcher EX as my launcher and it looks great with the Glas theme. I could not install it from the Market for whatever reason, so I search the net for an APK. In the About page it's listed as 2.59. You may want to try it as a launcher to fix your rotate issues

From what I understand from above, people can't root the device once they updated to Gingerbread. So, if you rooted your player in Froyo and you're happy with what that did, then I wouldn't update to Gingerbread. Perhaps eventually someone can find a way to root it in that OS, but it doesn't look like they have right now. Updating the OS will wipe out your rooting. I was never rooted, so it wasn't an issue.

Thanks and I agree, i won't be updating. I was just curious about ad-hoc support in Gingerbread. There's a rumor that ad-hoc is already supported in Gingerbread. If so, I don't need to root. If not already supported in Gingerbread, then I need rooted access

Can someone test if Adhoc networks are listed in Gingerbread?? Can you connect to it? Can it connect to it even if it has WEP key?

Thanks

All the network type of settings seem to be the same. It only supports WiFi, Bluetooth, and VPN. Everything I've read says that Android doesn't support ad hoc networks, and I assume that means all OS.

I don't think anyone's mind is going to be blown by updating to Gingerbread. It does greatly improve GPS and as someone who bought the device because of that, I'm very happy about that. It does allow you to download a few more apps that were only available for Gingerbread. It gives you a different look in things like icons for GPS and battery meter. It may have other advantages, but nothing that has jumped out at me so far.

I also justified the late-night purchase for the GPS as well. But I'd like to ask, how is GPS possible WITHOUT a network connection? Is there an app with pre-downloaded maps that's WORTH the price??

My sister got the US version at Best Buy earlier, came with Gingerbread. I've been messing around with it and one thing that stands out to me is the clarity option, along with a ton of other of soundalive options are gone from the music player's equalizer. There's now just a simply, barely functional EQ.

This is rather critical honestly, since without clarity turned up, the player sounds quite muffled. I think I'll hold off on updating for now myself, after seeing that.

In Galaxy S phones, you can install something called Voodoo, or tweak the phone's system settings to turn off the headphone frequency muffling, but you can't do that on this device; Voodoo doesn't install and the system menu is accessible, but disabled.

Edit:
On another note, her camera is waaay better at indoor photos. I'm not sure if it's gingerbread or just the US version of the player. Can someone with Gingerbread flashed test this?

I had posted that the original EQ was still there, because it was last night after the device re-started the first time, but after charging it overnight and booting it up this morning for a second time after the update, the original EQ has now disappeared. Very odd. So, yes, the original EQ does go away with the update to be replaced by a basic set of sliders. I might have to try another EQ from the market. Disappointing and something to consider.

I'm so happy with the GPS on this thing that I sold my Garmin GPS. I took both the Samsung Player and the Garmin on a long trip to compare them, and the Samsung outperformed the Garmin. I used the Sygic app free trial from the market. It does work offline. Once the trial expired, I bought it from Sygic for around $17 and got a code to make it permanent. You do have to download maps to store on the SD card, but it was no big deal. The maps seem up to date. A very basic version of CoPilot with 2D maps is also now available in the market for $2.99, but I never tried CoPilot because Sygic was free for the first seven days and I was happy with it enough to buy it. For free for seven days, any app is worth a try-out.
