Thanks for the information. Neither voice nor video works for me in google talk. I'm still using the original froyo. My friend has a sumsung nexus with gingerbread and has video chat working. Does any one know why it does not work on this device? Any way to get it working?

The thread link below discusses those who upgraded to Gingerbread 2.3.5. Newer firmware is dated 10/9/2011. Some say they have a significant speed and battery boost. Its not clear if the newer firmware continues issues with vibrate, home screen auto-rotate, flashlight led control, loss of bass, no master EQ, soundalive missing 3d & bass, concert hall. Once converted, Kies says that the firmware cannot be updated, instead of "latest version". Someone posted 2.3.5 wifi signal is lower than 2.2.2.

See the excellent instructions on pg. 26 of this thread. After I downloaded everything, the actual update from Froyo to Gingerbread took maybe 3 minutes, and then the Galaxy rebooted, took a bit longer than normal to get to the lock screen, but everything was there.. all my apps, contacts, music, photos, etc. Nothing was lost in the upgrade and I'm a happy camper.

I was scared to death to do it before I started (I even downloaded the original ROM first, just in case) but it really was quick, easy and painless.

** YMMV **
I'm not responsible for anything that goes wrong if you choose to upgrade your device.

You talked me into it, but then....

I have it plugged to Kies right now, it keeps trying to connect, over and over. Don't think is going to work.

Do any of you know where to get the 2.2.2 original firmware? I signed up to samfirmware, but don't seem to find it. Plus the RARs are encrypted.

Samfirmware is weird, you cannot change pages in the forum. Only the first posts of the thread are visible to me.

I created a dump file with Odin, who can I show it to?

Someone on page 27 also mentions that a ROM called PDA_low is bundled in the firmware, and if you install that part of it, it will bring you back to Froyo 2.2, if that's what you want to do. But I've had no problem flashing Gingerbread using that firmware and it works fine for me, I'm happy with it.

I am getting my procedures mixed up. I had rooted 2.2, upgraded to Gingerbread, and then rooted it.

Reviewing the upgrade procedures I would say that if you can do the following:

1.)Power off the Samsung YP-G70
2.)Press and hold both the Volume down button and the power button until a yellow triangle appears with the words 'Downloading'

Then, restore should be possible.

It said it didn't, but it did rooted 2.2.2. This time the Flashing process began and some secons later... well, you saw the pic.

Can't power off. I hold the power button until the screen goes off. But 3 seconds later is back on by itself. Always this screen:

The linked firmware I got, was from page 26 and when extracted, only had a SS_DL.dll application extension next to the firmware.

The Samfirmware RARs are password protected and I can't open them.

Edit 5:43 am (est): Managed to get the case off with a strait-edge blade out of a box cutter. Unplugging the battery doesn't reset the device. The device wont turn on if you plug it to the computer with the battery disconnected.

If you get that brick screen, it is fine. You don't have to keep trying to get the downloading screen. You may proceed with the flash.

I remembered one of the P2K rules, the one about using quality data cables. I realized that I wasn't using the samsung supplied USB cable.

I rectified that and retried a"Hail Mary flash" having given up on getting the downloading screen.

I Used the pad low and is running, lost all my apps, but is running.

Thanks for all your suggestions.

The screws are located inside the microSD compartment and on the bottom, underneath two white plugs you can see (actually, stickers, you can peel them off with a fingernail and see the screws underneath). There have been two or three people on this long thread that described the screw locations and that after the screws are off, you need a tool (screwdriver, razor, credit card, whatever will give leverage) to pry the back off, then the back can be snapped back on and screwed down again.

It would have been good to get the battery model number, too. At least it is good to know it's much easier than replacing the battery on an iPod Touch, which I've read requires soldering (a bit beyond my skill set).

All this is correct, the razor blade is my choice because when I tried a small screw drive I just bent the plastic without any progress scratching the shell. The blade being longer (or wider rather) covers a larger are with less effort.

http://www.labelsplus.ca/images/HD-blades.jpg

I could make a video after I recover from my ordeal. but I would have to figure out how youtube works and all that; or maybe I could e-mail you the video clip.

But is not that difficult, remove the 3 screws from the above mentioned spots.
And just start inserting the blade carefully on the left side (the opposite side of the power and vol. buttons). Work your way around the chromed edge pushing the white shell outward and you will hear the hooks snap off gently.

The right side has almost no hooks so that is the ez side, what is relatively hard part (but not much)is the area of the audio jack so just massage it off.

And that is it! you yp-g70 is exposed to the elements. The battery has a copper ribbon connection with a plug that snaps easily on or off and it is held in place with adhesive. Replacement will be no-sweat operation.

When I say CAREFULLY is so you don't cause cosmetic damage to the player or cut your dumb ass up.

As a reminder, Kies requires this setting:

Thanks to omh1009 for the second 1SaleADay Sandisk 32GB $32.98. Works flawlessly.

Thanks to kexrex for the $7.50 Archos case http://www.ebay.com/itm/230628797468/
The reading stand works great, the corners are somewhat protected if dropped. Aside from reading, I remove it from the case to use it. I don't have the courage for the purcelljf hack-saw mod for the bottom edge. The Kobo foam insert mod wasn't tried; mine is snug as is.

I just discovered multi-tasking by press/holding the Home button to swap between running apps.

I know, It kept switching back to MTP for some reason, I got it to connect. Still, it is crazy slow.
Kies says is not messing with the Ginger bread firmware.

So, when do we get Honeycomb, 'cause I got the flash fever.

And your wellcome.

By the way, saying that the GPS lock on is "better" than in froyo, is a dis-service to the rest of the Galaxy users.

This thing displays directions as soon as your done typing the destination. It's incredible! Doesn't even have time for the "searching for satellite" sign to come up. Deviate from the route and an alternative is plotted immediately, none of that RECALCULATING crap you get with dedicated GPS devices. Must be that few, if any, GPS come with a 1Ghz CPU.

Scrolling is not as smooth as before, but I don't sweat that, it is not Sony Dash bad. Now I need a way to overclock it hahaha.

Edit: Maybe it is my imagination, but it feels that it takes longer to charge.
The battery usage list no longer displays cell stand-by. However, it list a percentage of battery use for everything else: Android system, Android OS, every app you have used on that power cycle, idle... Check it out and you'll see. More findings will follow as I notice them and get my lazy azz to type them.

I think the message that it doesn't update via Kies is because it now updates over the air via WiFi. If you look at the about page in settings, there's a box to check for automatic updates. I'm pretty sure that wasn't there with Froyo. I'm hoping it means it will get an upgrade to Ice Cream Sandwich if and when they update these devices to that. I don't think it will ever get an upgrade to Honeycomb, since that's optimized for tablets 7" and larger. Ice Cream Sandwich is designed to bridge the gap between Android on small and large screen devices, somehow. I don't know how it will actually work or how it will make apps behave.

I confirm that the compass goes psycko on gingerbread. Mine can't tell north from south. I'll download a couple of compass apps and see if they are all affected.

About the firmware, there are updates and there are upgrades. If lucky, we'll get updates. But to get new OSs (or whatever the plural for that is) It will be in new devices I'm affaid. It's better for business.

Edit: 11:28pm(EST) Just checked the auto update, to use it forces you to open a Samsung account, I hate that. Went ahead and got it out of the way, checked for updates and none were there... As expected.

Made the jump to Gingerbread recently too. Compass thing is annoying, but seems to do OK if you recalibrate frequently which is easy. YouTube video linked below shows how to do it easily. Sorry purists, the video uses an Iphone, but it works the same on Android.

Yeah, you could recalibrate. But it doesn't work every time, I spent quite a while trying different ways to fix it (nothing software related, don't have those skills) and nothing worked for more than a minute. Google has to fix this, there are plenty of complaints. A working compass is a must if you are navegating on foot in an unfamiliar city. There are some fixes that require editing some files, but that is messing with code, I don't do code, I'm affraid of code.
I also confirm that the EQ for the music player is severely stripped down. If this is your main music player, DO NOT make the switch to Ginger.

One question to those who use lauchers, which do you recomend?
What is the deal with GoLauher EX? All I see in the market place are"themes" which prompt you to install the go laucher app. When you follow the link, it doesn't find jack. There hundreds of themes and no way to use them?

Edit: 11:20 (est) I went directly to it with my browser. Our device is not supported by go laucher.

GoLauncher can be downloaded directly from their site. You just have to "sideload" it from your PC (transfer the .apk file via USB, the microSD, or even DropBox). Once it's on your device, it will install successfully. I'm not sure why it says it's incompatible on the Android Market because it is compatible, as far as I can see. I tried using it, but you do need to re-load all your app shortcuts all over again and I just got lazy and went back to using the stock launcher, since it already had my app shortcuts on it. The link for the download is here:

http://www.goforandroid.com/GDTEn/sourceDL.aspx?softid=13&nav=0

As far as EQ for the music player, I've found both PlayerPro and PowerAmp to be vastly superior to the stock music player. They both have EQ's that are much better, though I give an edge to PowerAmp because I like their pre-amp feature in their EQ. It gives a nice boost to the sound. Both are available for free trials, then are $5 for either for long-term use.

I'm thinking of flashing back to recover landscape mode in the home screen, compass and to free system resourses. You can use Android Assistant to see how much RAM and CPU you are using. Which is more than froyo, but I just can't quit that instant GPS lock.

How did you get your hands on it?

I went there, and it made me sign in with the Android marketplace to make the download. A pop-up comes on asking to choose the install device and since my YP-G70 is tied to the account, that is the only option available.

Don't see an obvious way to get that .apk you were talking about.

Rooting 2.2.2 (in my case) made sense. At least, to remove the Cellphone stanby allocation of battery power. Look at your device settings»about device»battery use, and you will see it hording battery juice for a function that is not even there. The US market version comes gingerbreaded, wih the cellphone stanby removed, but with a barebones music equalizer so if this is your main music player consider keeping it at 2.2.2.

Remeber, we got this things before they hit the market. They are forein versions and Samsung seems to be supporting each market at different rate. The gingerbread firmwares we are using are original samsung, we just did not got them from them.
Rooting 2.2.2 to remove cellphone standby is more involved than just flashing 2.3.5. Plus, 2.3.5 fixes the GPS, the darwback is that it breaks the compass. Landscape mode in the home screen is no longer there but this is easy to fix by installing Go.Launcher.
