I've had better results with the Talkatone alpha for Android. It works best with the headset. I've had no problems with static or drop-outs as I have had with GrooveIP. I can't get Groove to work very well with my device no matter how I change the settings. So far, no problems with Talkatone, other than not being able to use speakerphone setting with it, which I almost never use, anyways. You can download the .apk from their website to your computer and sideload it to give it a try. They plan to be on Android Market, eventually.

Finally got a chance to try to get GrooVe IP working well today. It actually seems quite good and not so hard to set up. Much better than the first time I tried it. There have been some updates in the release since then and I think I am understanding the settings better. UI is nice, lag is fairly comparable to normal cell phone performance. Voice quality is quite good. Speakerphone mode also seems decent. If today's results remain consistent, I'll soon dump the cell phone and that monthly bill. If anyone is interested, let me know and I'll post the settings that are working for me.

Is setting it up hard to figure out?
Web site says "no manual".

edit: 10:26pm(EST) Never mind, got it. It works, sounds good. There is about a full second delay but it is free minutes. Tomorrow, I see if I can get calls in it.

Tried to reach my sister's AT&T cell with Talkatone. It rang and connected but could not hear her. So I called again and got the voicemail message, after the beep, I tried to record but got an error message saying that I either did not speak or there was a bad connection press 2 to try again. So it played the outgoing message again and I tried to record after the beep. As soon as I started speaking told me to press 2 to try again and so on. So I gave up, but a while later, my sister called me saying that she had a voicemail message of mine asking her if she could hear me.
???????????????????
Oh, I see the first time I called It went to voicemail, I just didn't hear her outgoing message.
Are this voicemail problems common in this "Voip-to-cell" connections?

I don't know if anyone else did this, so I'll throw it out there.
I went to Samsung USA and downloaded an update for mine and it seems to be running faster.
I already loaded gingerbread....
Maybe we're getting support now?
Also the "keys" program sucks!

Also when I loaded ginger bread I got go launcher, that's why my screen now rotates even in the home screen.
My 2 cents.

Yes, kies pc stinks in a mayor way. But, are you saying that there is a gingerbread update in Kies? I'll have to take a look at that. I have autoupdate enabled, so maybe I have it already.

If you download Kies air from Samsung Apps, you can manage your files from any PC without extra software through any web browser. Pc needs to be in the same network.

Yeah, right after I updated to ginger bread I installed Kies USA. Plugged it in and it asked if I wanted to update. I said he11 yeah.
I got go launcher, fixed the auto rotate & vib mode. Also it seemed faster. Maybe it was go launcher which was a pain to figure out...
I also tried the Kies Hong Kong version which was a nightmare.

I suspected this. You got a Kies update, not a YP-G70 update.

I started Kies and it started a software update before I plugged the device.

After it was done, I got this:

Kies can tell that the YP-G70 (TTT)did not come with GingerBread, the US YP-G70CW did.

Unless you got a different (maybe a newer)ROM than the one I got.

What firmware does Kies say you have?

How do you deal with the echo feedback?

I have very little interest in hearing myself talk. I already enabled hardware and software cancellation but still get the echo.

Ginger flash is easier. Just one step, takes care of the battery, fixes GPS and benchmarks prove that it runs faster. GoLauncher EX is available at Samsung apps which fixes the "no landscape mode" on the home screen; and not only that, it adds a crazy amount of customization options.

Still no fix for the compass though.

I haven't had any problem with echo feedback. The app seems to work best with using the headset, but I haven't had echo either with or without. It doesn't work consistently well all the time, but it does most of the time. It's worked much better than Groove IP, which I've never had any luck with after paying $5 for it. Other people have had Groove work for them, and I've tried using recommended settings, but still no luck. It could be there's something about the way people's internet access is or some other factor that affects the way VOIP apps behave, independent of the device itself.

No it wasn't a kies update. My media player is the same as yours. It was tethered and asked if I wanted to update it. I had already update kies in an earlier session. I had already updated to gingerbread. Also I registered it in on the USA site.
I'm running kies ver 2.1.1.11124_17.

I bet it was the Samsung App store that got the update.

This is probably a silly question (from someone who hasn't even updated from froyo yet), but, wondered if anyone has learned to deal with the internal sd card being seen as the sd card rather than the external sd card. At least that's been my experience when using App 2 SD it just puts the app on the internal SD card rather than the external SD card I have inserted. It's been o.k. so far since there's plenty of room on our device but today I installed iBird app which puts 600+MB to SD card and I noticed how it didn't go to the external SD card just to the internal SD card which shows as "Internal Memory" in settings (ES File Explorer sees it there). Settings does see ext SD card as SD card but App 2 SD doesn't. Maybe it's a setting in App 2 SD I'm not getting. I don't think it's a fault of App 2 SD but something in device settings that I haven't found to direct sending to external SD card.

omh1009

quality posts: 7 Private Messages omh1009

Don't know. I use the external SD for media files. You know, a throw back to the cassette days.
All my apps I put into the internal memory.

Try this:
Go to settings>Applications>Manage applications.
When you get there, you'll see the list of apps with check boxes next too them.
On top of the list are 4 options:

+Third party
+All
+USB storage*****
+Running

Maybe, by checking an app in the USB storage option you'll be able to transfer them.

Edit: Just moved one. No need to do much, when you tap on "manage applications" and get to the list, tap on the app you want to transfer. It will show all the app info and some buttons like "force stop ","uninstall","clear data" and (the one you want) "move to USB Storage".

Expert or novice, you should be able to take it from there.

I can verify that you can in fact register this device at the Samsung US site. It shows up in the drop down boxes when you follow the steps to registering it. I then received a confirmation email from Samsung that the device was registered with them. I don't know what this means yet in terms of any updating.

Perhaps I should have added more information. Go here http://www.samsung.com/us/support/account/regist
Pick "Mobile" then "Media Players" then "Galaxy Players" then "YP-G70CW" then "YP-G70CW/TTT" from the dropdowns. Enter your serial number from the back of the device not from the box, and you should be good to go.

Thanks for your quick reply! Just looked at my device and the 4 Options I have are:

Third-party
Running
All
On SD Card

No USB Storage option for me. I still have froyo,so, maybe that's why since I notice you have updated to ginger. The option that is "On SD Card" is actually the internal SD memory and not the external SD card. Still a bit confused. In Settings>SD Card and device storage I have 1)SD Card,2)Internal Memory,3)Internal device storage and SD Card is the ext SD card. Internal memory is what is shown as "On SD card" in Settings>Applications>Manage Applications so when I "move to SD Card" it gets sent to internal memory. Not sure why Settings>SD Card and device storage sees ext SD card as SD card, but,Settings>Applications>Manage Applications has "On SD Card" for Internal Memory. I'm not really as novice as this makes me feel.

inside "manage applications" under the "All" option, when you tap an app from the list, what do you get?

I get all the info and properties of it(and the soft buttons). Read it carefully look for a line that says "installed on device"(that is what I have) that means is installed internally and can be move to SD by tapping the "move to USB storage" soft button. If it says "installed on SD card" then your done.(this is how it is in Gingerbread)
Maybe your apps are already in the external one. Pull the card out and see if they are available.

I don't have the froyo interface in front of me, so unfortunately, I can't see what you see. Are you waiting for Samsung to do the gingerbread upgrade on it through Kies? There are many improvements that come with the flashing. The success rate is very high and more apps become compatible.
Think about it, because I get the feeling Samsung is going to leave the TTT owners hanging with no upgrade.

I remember early on, that someone called Samy reps. They disavowed any knowledge of its existence. Then again, that was before the debut of the US version.

I'm curious too about any rights we may get if we register it. I won't hold my breath about it, last time I registered something all I got was spam.

I think you're probably right about Samsung not issuing an official update for this device, but, I've been hesitant to flash to 2.3. However, I've been having difficulties lately, eg. removed sd card (unmounted first) per your suggestion and very many apps disappeared so assumed they must have been on sd card but, when putting sd back into device am now unable to access apps and won't let me "mount" sd card only unmount option is available and it freezes when I try to unmount. So, if I can't get it to work as is, might as well flash. If I can somehow get the sd card to be recognized and mount should I use something like MyBackup to backup files before flashing? What flash method did you use? Was it the one I see you mentioned in an earlier post?

omh1009

quality posts: 7 Private Messages omh1009

The same method everyone had posted here. About apps and personal info, they seem to be stored in a separate partition . They should still be there after flashing.

When I flashed mine made the mistake of using the wrong cable (not the one that came from Samsung) and bricked it.

If you go back far enough, you will see my Katie Kabooming and moaning about it.

All you need are the samsung drivers, with Kies that is already done.
Get the firmware from Samfirmware.com, I think the password for the RAR file is Samfirmware.com.
Odin 1.3 I think.

These are the instructions:
http://www.woot.com/forums/viewpost.aspx?PostID=4639001&PageIndex=26&ReplyCount=1309#post4679386

And, for using a non-Samsung USB cable, this is when things went wrong for me:
http://www.woot.com/forums/viewpost.aspx?PostID=4639001&PageIndex=31&ReplyCount=1309#post4726990

But no sweat, I realized (after a while) about the cable and replaced it for the one that came with the YP-G70. When I tried it again, it worked without incident.

Since my flash went wrong, I had to re-download all the apps. but now that I messed it up, you don't have to.

As soon as someone confirms that the apps remain intact, you should be getting to work on this, ok?

I flashed to Gingerbread using Odin as described earlier in this forum. Apps remained intact. One thing I missed on the first try is that PC must have drivers installed first, which happens anyway if you installed Kies. Some have suggested that wiping (factory reset)before flashing may result in more stable performance. I didn't do the wipe and it seems OK. If you do the wipe you will have to reinstall all your apps. Paid apps from Android market will reinstall for free through your Google login.

Thanks to your encouragement and advice, I bit the bullet and flashed. Flash went smoothly after following directions from pg. 26. However, nail biting time after caused by what must have been corrupted SD card. Device kept freezing and restarting until I removed SD card. Tried reloading things to SD card after formatting on device since I had saved to PC first, but , no go. So I ended up formatting the SD card and had to start over with those apps. All other apps did migrate to new OS. In settings>applications>manage applications I now have the 4 options you mentioned and the interesting thing is that there were "ghosts" of the apps that had been on the SD card (now non-functional) so I searched for those via google and knew what the were before deleting them so I could proceed with reloading. Quite a few to do. Amazon and Market apps no problem once identified since they are still available in my accounts, Probably have between 30-40 free market ones that need to reinstall. At least it's working though and I can relax a bit. I notice the wifi seems less sensittive but that may just be a difference in the way it displays (don't really know how to see actual signal reading and never saw that when on 2.2) Can't remember if I had checked Kies before though I did have it on the PC. Plan to hook up to that soon. Thanks for the encouragement!
