Up early today after spending a couple of hours in bed tossing and turning trying to get comfortable. Saw this woot and it was like, "Eureka!" I'm in!

Not sure if someone mentioned this yet but I got this a while back and while I loved it at first it is now sitting in the land of abandoned pillows because it flattened out within a very short time. I guess it means that this deal for 2 is pretty good then with the automatic backup.

richardhod wrote:this is most interesting. as one familiar with good quantitative research, i'm sad that much tcm isn't valid, as i do hope for softer alternatives to some procedures. Given most brain-body causal processes are not well detailed in science as yet, there could still be explanations in there for any TCM or similar practices which turn out statistically (ie empirically) to have value, and to be therefore explainable in the long run by science. Some of the herbs, and some manipulations may yet be in this category.

ps. placebo effect is very useful and quite strong. IMHO, feel free to go ahead and believe, just in case!

Worry not. I should have been clearer. I didn't mean that TCM doesn't work because there is simply no practical way to test out every technique and every herb. I'm sure many of the herbs do have medicinal effects. My problems is that the foundation is flimsy to non-existent. Whenever I challenge my mother to a simple placebo-controlled trial, she gets indignant. And that was the attitude I found throughout NYC's Chinatown. ASking how something works is a no-no, as is contradicting the practitioner. As such, my guess is that most of the herbs don't work as prescribed. Indeed, my personal experience is that the symptoms mostly heal themselves.

As for acupuncture, the most intriguing study was done on animals. Apparently, they too show physiological effects. The kicker is that you can't blame it on the placebo affect or psychology since animals aren't susceptible. I haven't read the study but I should point out that just because an animal's body has a non-local reaction to a needle, it doesn't mean that acupuncture works. The nervous system is a complex network and stimulating one area may indeed evoke a reaction elsewhere. But that doesn't imply anything curative, or energy-related, which TCM claims. The silliest examples are acupressure of the soles, where every organ is mapped to an area of the foot.

As for the placebo effect, it may become my next research area (I went from human sexuality to HIV to HIV neurophysiology and am now looking for something different). The big ethical questions are:

If placebos work...
1) Should doctors knowingly prescribe a placebo or sham treatment?
2) Should insurance pay for it?

If the answers are yes, you're basically saying to allow snake oil. And to decriminalize some types of medical fraud.

------

Researchers studied asthmatic patients treated with a bronchodilator drug (albuterol), a placebo inhaler, sham acupuncture using a retractable needle, or no intervention.

Albuterol increased lung function by 20% compared to just 7% for the other three interventions. Yet patients reported that improvement were the same for the albuterol, the placebo and the sham acupuncture, and significantly lower in the no-intervention group.

We have had ours for about 5 months now and fight to see who will get it at night. Besides the point I guess, it hasn't flattened out on us yet.

The button fits a corresponding hole on the other side of the pillowcase so that there is a hole, which is designed for you to put your ear on, which means you are properly lined up so your spine is straight.

July/August 2011 Atlantic Magazine Article had an interesting article on alternative medicine, and the use of the "placebo effect" in mainstream medicine.

http://www.theatlantic.com/magazine/archive/2011/07/the-triumph-of-new-age-medicine/8554/

"Yet on its own terms, this argument is not as cut-and-dried as it first appears. “Mainstream medicine uses the placebo effect all the time,” says Ted Kaptchuk, a Harvard researcher who studies the impact of placebos. “Doctors don’t tell you the drug they’re giving you is barely better than a placebo. They all spin.” To be approved by the FDA, a drug has to do better than a placebo in studies—but most approved drugs do only a little better, and for many drugs the evidence is mixed. A number of studies have indicated, for example, that most antidepressants don’t do better than placebos, but patients filled more than 250 million prescriptions for them in 2010. The vast majority of drugs don’t work in as many as 70 percent of patients, according to an estimate from within the pharmaceutical industry. One recent study concluded that 85 percent of new prescription drugs hitting the market are of little or no benefit to patients."

I wasn't quite sure what you were referencing by "the hole", the gap between the two sides of it where your shoulder goes or the little ear part. The ear hole definitely wouldn't play a part in this.

Interesting. I'm not a nurse or owner of the pillow. Perhaps my sleep problems are not as severe as some, but I was told by a pulmonologist that I would have no need for a CPAP if I could manage to sleep on my side all night. Hmm...this may just be limited to people like me who have a very chin-forward posture that results in airway problems.

Regardless, I've been off the CPAP for several months now and am more well-rested now than ever. I can only credit Reiki for initial help, and then a weight-loss of about 10 pounds.

I work with CPAP patients every day (Respiratory Clinician) and I can see this helping, especially if you have a full face mask that tends to leak when laying on your side.

How well it holds your head up in a properly aligned position depends on how wide your shoulders are. For bigger people, you may need one and a half or two. How you get a half pillow or make two pillows stack, that's your problem.

Also, the ear bunghole should be flat on the bottom, not conical.

Well, there is a downside to everything. On a normal pillow you flatten your ears down over time. With this pillow ear hole, your ears will flap outward like Obama and then what? Politics? Obama Ears here I come!

As a side sleeper, my knees tend to bend forward. =) Therefore, I'd put the longer side in front. I'm hoping the short side will fit in the little cubby hole made by the back of my knees.
