Besides sleeping on my side, I also like a chilly pillow; do these turn you into a hot-head? Since your head has to remain in one spot, it could get mighty toasty.

I just got four pillows based on pure hope that these will solve all my problems.

That, or they're becoming Christmas presents. One slightly used.

Two pertinent questions:

1. Is this of the "hard" or the "soft" variety? See wal-mart review: http://reviews.walmart.com/1336/15706091/as-seen-on-tv-side-sleeper-pro-pillow-reviews/reviews.htm

2. Does this poly-fill stuff resist dust mites and other allergens?

Thanks all!

I was dumb enough to buy one of these from BB&B then promptly returned it. Guess there's a refurb out there somewhere. Anyway, the ear hole (it's not a button) would probably fit if you have the neck of a giraffe. It landed somewhere above my ear. The back support kind of V'd out away from me and whatever the instructions said about space for your down arm (I forget) just plain didn't work.

I bought 1 of these at BB&B and absolutely love it! I have spend literally hundreds of dollars over the past couple of years trying to find a pillow that works for me. This is it!! It is fairly firm, but perfectly aligns my neck and head. I am waking up without a headache for the first time in years! I am buying these today, just so I have them in reserve.

Remember, pillows are very personal to each user, so what works for me may or may not work for you. Just wanted to provide my opinion!

Yeah, I can see how this is confusing. Just to confirm, we will send you two pillows and two covers. You can also confirm this by going to My Account to review the receipt.

It will look something like this:

You want 1

SideSleeper Pro Pillow and Pillow Case – 2 Pack
You ordered 2 SideSleeper Pro Pillow.
You ordered 2 Zippered Pillowcase.

As to the woot item, I'm not sure everyone would enjoy the ear-well feature. If I slept more on my side, this might be a pillow for me, but I usually end up on my stomach (head turned to the side). I hope we see more specialty pillows. I'm looking for a stomach-sleeper one that won't make me twist my head to the sides as much.

I've wanted the sleepphones for a while, but would rather pay $15 to try these pillows than $40 to try the sleepphones. Come on, sleepphone people, $40 is too much!

Ha, that's funny. Back when I went to a chiropractor the only really noticeable thing he did was to fix my shoulders, which actually were subluxated. So apparently I saw a chiropractor for one of the few scientifically valid things the practice can do! Dammit, I just bought one of these for the same price. It's true that it's a little small if you're tall, but I still use it. I don't actually sleep on it (I figure it'd be useless if I toss and turn a bit) but if I'm lying on my side and watching a movie or whatever, it's better than a regular pillow.

It does actually come with a pillowcase, and what you're seeing in the pic is with the pillowcase on; it's just that it's thin, cheap, and white, and ends up looking more like a bare pillow.

This would be a great product if it was 1) bigger and 2) the pillowcase was more substantial, of a nicer texture, and attractive. But if you lie on your side a lot, and if you have back problems, I'd recommend getting it at this price (2 for $20), since it's so cheap. If I was shorter I'd say I'd have been happy to pay the price I did ($20 for 1).

I bought a couple to try, but I am uncertain about them. I gave up on polyester fill pillows because I have very sensitive hearing and am an absurdly light sleeper and the danged things would keep me up all night with the whisper of the polyester fill compressing and decompressing. Seriously! I tried a pillow filled with silk thread I bought in China, but it also didn't work, so I have been using a memory foam pillow. But the shape of it encourages a bad habit I have of sleeping with my head cranked back. We'll see how these do. If they don't work, there's always Craigslist to find someone else who might want them.

Bought one of these a few months ago because I am pregnant and sleeping on my side is one of the hardest aspects of pregnancy for me. Unfortunately, this pillow did not fit me well. I am 5'5" and my neck is not long enough for my ear to hit the ear hole. I gave the pillow to my 6'3" husband and it fits him perfectly. He sleeps really well with it but says he doesn't like the lack of freedom to change positions when he uses it.

It holds the two sides of the pillow case together so you have an earwell on both sides of the pillow.

http://www.asseenontvonsale.com/health/side-sleeper-pro-pillow/

The reviews listed have a lot of good information in them. It also sounds like may waited over a month to get the pillow(s) interlaced with the complaints about the TV advertised web site that they purchased from, most negativity is because of who they bought them from, which taints the opinion of the pillows. You never really know if it will work for you unless you've tried them.

There are over 200 posts and I would say more than half of the unhappy people are upset with the site that they purchased the pillow from, with many claiming excessive extra charges and some paying $80 - $100 for 4 pillows & cases!

One of the best tips I saw was to use alternate pillow cases, like T-Shirts to protect the pillow.

I'm in for these because I am looking for a very firm pillow, and I am a side sleeper who usually uses 2 pillows, so I am going to give these a try. If they don't work as advertised, I'm thinking that they will work for back support while inclined, sitting in bed or between my knees while on my side. We shall see.

How did I get here?

sdc100 wrote:Why did you have to get me started on acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM)? And yes, I am VERY familiar with the modality. As you can see, my last initial is "C." Make a guess on what half of my racial makeup might be. Here's a clue: my mom is a trained practitioner of TCM. Let's put it this way: None of her training holds up to modern statistical analysis. Even the concept of placebo-control is foreign to her. When I was at Columbia University's School of Biostatistics, over 70% of the grad students were from China. They told me that as China relies more and more on modern statistics, more and more of TCM is falling apart.

The Skeptical Inquirer had an excellent piece on the flimsiness of acupuncture. Yeah it works -- but only for subjective conditions like pain, and only if you believe or are psychologically in tuned. Studies with sham meridians and sham retracting needles show how much it relies on psychology. I will admit that there is a very intriguing study with animals, but human studies have not been favorable to TCM.

As for diagnostics, it's a joke. I visited over 10 practitioners for the fun of it and none of them, including my mother, were able to detect some of my major medical problems by feeling my pulse or looking at my tongue. And if you want a good laugh, you should read some of their textbooks. My research area is in HIV neurophysiology so I have a couple of TCM books on AIDS. In their opinion, AIDS arise from "the ministerial fire" that is created when two Yangs interact sexually. In other words, HIV/AIDS arise spontaneously out of two men having sex; no initial microbe is necessary. Abiogenesis was disproved by Pasteur in the 19th century yet a TCM text from 2000 still advocates it.

As for Qi, which forms the foundation of TCM, including acupuncture, it's been disproved many times, including some notable demonstrations on PBS's Scientific American Frontiers. Practitioners were asked to exert their Qi over microbe cultures, trying to influence their growth, Absolutely no effect. The BBC also had a great program where a Qi master were shown to knock over multiple assailants (consisting of his students) with a wave of his hand at a distance! Yet when skeptic Massimo Pigliucci asked to be knocked down, no waving from even inches away had any effect. In other words, either there was mass hypnosis among his students or outright fraud.

BTW, there's a sadly hilarious YouTube video showing an elderly Japanese Kiai (the Japanese form of Qi) master in a monetary challenge against an MMA fighter. The master claimed a 200-0 record, and is shown beating his pupils effortlessly. But in the match, the old coot kept throwing unseen Qi energy balls to no effect. After the poor old man was knocked over twice, the match was stopped.

Finally, consider the wonderfully simply experiment by 10 y/o Emily Rosa. She devised a very simple controlled experiment to test Therapeutic Touch to see if practitioners can truly detect a "life force." The results were no better than chance. The study made Rosa the youngest author to publish in a peer-reviewed journal (the prestigious JAMA). A similar experiment showed that practitioners were also unable to feel Qi.

I will stop here. But please, familiarize yourself with what scientists actually do before criticizing us. We're very open minded, but demand data and formal analysis before giving a modality any credibility. If we weren't open minded, we wouldn't be researchers, which by definition means that we seek new information to challenge the status quo.

If you want more information, contact me privately as I am unlikely to revisit today's Woot, depending on my workload (this is not a product I'm particularly interested in).

PS - you're wrong about Quantum Physics. No one "laughed" at its founders. People were merely skeptical because it conflicted with Newtonian physics, i.e. the need for ether. No one "laughed." They were waiting for evidence, as scientists should, i.e. Morley Michelson, Bell's Inequality, etc. The same went for Einstein's theories, which took years for experimental confirmation. To quote Carl Sagan, "Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence."

Excellent post. As a future pharmacist, I'm glad that we have such rational people in charge of research efforts.

Anyone know how well they keep their shape? I recently bought a pillow that supposedly "never flattens" due to a gel/memory foam core, yet I managed to flatten one side of it, inevitably making it lumpy and infuriating.

EDIT: Never mind, just read some of the reviews on the site previously posted. I'm going to save my money and keep trying with standard-shaped pillows. (The suffering of a side-sleeper never ends. ;__; )
