sdc100 wrote:That's not a good idea!. The small size and colorful filling may fool some kids into thinking that they're candy. They can even fool parents since they resemble a liquid candy that many parents had as kids (see below). While these are supposedly non-toxic, the liquid can still stain. Worse, if the child should manage to bite (or cut) through the plastic (as they would with the candy), s/he can be cut by glass. I'm not sure about these but many glow sticks contain a glass capsule to separate the chemicals until activation. To make it light, bend the stick until the internal capsule break, mixing the chemicals. In fact, the process was even patented. Imagine the harm that can come to a child because of the glass shards.

Compare these Glow Sticks with the Wax Jumbo Sticks with liquid candy sold through Amazon. See candy photo below.

That's why you say, I'm giving out glowsticks, do you want to get it ready or me? That's what I did last year. No problems. I usually wear one while I'm passing them out, pretty much makes it clear what they are.

This site here has a bunch of interesting tips to coincide with having glow sticks... such as,

"Hurting animals is never acceptable behavior! Some people use Halloween as an excuse to hurt cats and that is just wrong!"

and

"Vandalism is never cool! Throwing eggs at cars and houses is not cool."

Who needs an excuse to hurt cats?

And with the lanyard you can spin them around in circles like sparklers and make glow "O"s in the air.

sdc100 wrote:While I agree that it's inexcusable, I should explain that different colors glow for different lengths of time. That's not only due to chemical characteristics, but also due to our eyes. We're more sensitive to some frequencies so even a very faint glow is visible. If I'm not mistaken green glows the brightest and is visible the longest, while red is the shortest. Our sensitivity to green explains why a green laser pointer seems much brighter than a red one although they output the same power.

Well, I was wrong. Red is in the middle, while purple and white are the shortest-lived. Here is an interesting post on a glow stick blog. The exact glow time depends on the exact formulation, but at lest this gives you the longest-lived colors.

I would recommend giving these to any animal you suspect to be peeing in your house. Just wait until sundown and their secret mess will finally come to the light.

beezdotcom wrote:Freezing an activated glow stick makes some sense, if you want to slow/postpone its actual use. Freezing an unused glow stick doesn't help you, and might actually break the internal membrane keeping the chemicals from activating.

Huh? If you broke the internal membrane (which is usually a glass capsule), you force it to activate because the chemicals mix. How does breaking the separation membrane prevent the chemicals from activating?

We always give out non-candy stuff. The Kids gets lots of candy already.

We gave out play-doh once, that was popular. The year we gave out comics didn't go so well. We gave out fake tattoos and they were well-received.

We gave out Glow-sticks two years ago and they were a big hit. I think these will be awesome as they are bigger and brighter than the ones we did last time.

In for 3 (we get between 40 and 60 TorT'ers each year)

I NEVER KNEW THAT! You'd think that living in profane NYC (and attending a high school with one of the highest SAT averages), I'd know that the s-word has a past tense. It never even occurred to me. And even if it did occur to me, I would have assumed that the past tense would be s-word + "ted." Thanks for enriching my vocabulary by one more word.

Last winter, when it would not stop snowing and we all had enormous snow banks, this guy I know dug holes in his snow banks to make troll faces and filled them with glow sticks. It was pretty cool.

As a chemist I can tell you that they will reside in land fills essentially forever, slowly leaking their chemicals into the groundwater. And yes, children WILL mistake them for candy!

These are great to keep on the shelf for emergency lighting if the power goes out. They last for hours, don't generate heat, won't set the house on fire, and even when they're about dead, you can use them to mark obstacles in the hallway.

During the aftermath of Hurricane Andrew, the cops were too overwhelmed to process all the looters, so they'd break open a light stick, spray it all over the perp and let 'em know that was their one warning: the glow would make them an easy target if they were caught in the area again.

That can actually be a good thing because the $5 coupon code "TAXSUCKS" only works if you spend more than $39.99. Including the $5 s/h makes it easier to reach $39.99. For those who don't know, the code only works for those living in states where Woot collects sales tax: TX, WA and NY.

If you don't plan on using these quickly, put them in the fridge or freezer. They'll have a much longer shelf life. I had a glow stick in my freezer that still worked 10+ years later.

I haven't verified this but I believe you can also extend the glow time by freezing. More specifically, I think you can stop or dim the glowing by freezing. In other words, if you only need it to glow for an hour, I think you can slow the chemical reaction by freezing. That way, you can reuse it at will by defrosting until the chemicals are completely spent. Again, I haven't verified this but have heard about it from friends. And it does make scientific sense.

As a kid we'd have festivals every year that would sell glowing necklaces, bracelets, etc. We'd always put it in the freezer after we got home so that I could enjoy it the next night too.

i'm concerned about some degree of toxicity -- not an unsightly mess (sorry) -- even though the description states that the glowing substance is safe. um, says who??

of course we want our kids to be super visible when they're walking around in the dark on halloween. i'm merely suggesting supervised use, since these are NOT toys.

It's safe - except for the glass pieces which hold the two reactants apart before you CRACK them.
