If you don't plan on using these quickly, put them in the fridge or freezer. They'll have a much longer shelf life. I had a glow stick in my freezer that still worked 10+ years later.
I haven't verified this but I believe you can also extend the glow time by freezing. More specifically, I think you can stop or dim the glowing by freezing. In other words, if you only need it to glow for an hour, I think you can slow the chemical reaction by freezing. That way, you can reuse it at will by defrosting until the chemicals are completely spent. Again, I haven't verified this but have heard about it from friends. And it does make scientific sense.
As a kid we'd have festivals every year that would sell glowing necklaces, bracelets, etc. We'd always put it in the freezer after we got home so that I could enjoy it the next night too.
FINALLY GOT A Bucket of Candycorn ON 9/22/10!

i'm concerned about some degree of toxicity -- not an unsightly mess (sorry) -- even though the description states that the glowing substance is safe. um, says who??
of course we want our kids to be super visible when they're walking around in the dark on halloween. i'm merely suggesting supervised use, since these are NOT toys.
It's safe - except for the glass pieces which hold the two reactants apart before you CRACK them.
