Well, how do you fare compared to the Zeitgeist? Chat up your fellow wooters and let us know how lame this poll was or what obvious choices we missed. For example: Was this poll a) STUPID, b) DUMB, c) POINTLESS or d) ALL OF THE ABOVE?

There doesn't seem to be enough variation in FPS games for me to want to play 'em. Get guns. Kill things.

RPGs FTW.

FPS for unwinding and relaxing without having to think. RTS for something more challenging.

For one, not all RPGs are Japanese... meaning not all have the anime hair and look.

I guess my favorite would have to be 4x games (eXplore, eXpand, eXploit, and eXterminate) like Galactic Civilizations, Master of Orion, Civilization, etc.

Somehow I knew before I even voted that RTS would lose this poll, even with my vote.

The best game I've ever played was Eidos' "Thief: The Dark Project" series. It was a First-Person Sneaker. You were a guy in a cloak and leather outfit. You had a blackjack, some rope arrows, "water" arrows, a sword (mostly useless) and you had to stay hidden in the shadows. If the guards caught you, they'd cut you to pieces in seconds. So the entire time you were playing, you were worried about getting caught. Playing that game in the dark with headphones on was awesome. There were puzzles you had to solve ("how do I break into this place?") or secret doors to be discovered, guards to blackjack... While FPS gets redundant after 1 hour of gameplay, Thief never failed to be impressive. And the fan-made missions were often better than the original. Sadly, it was made for Win 98-early XP. Uses Direct X, so I can't run it in VirtualBox on my Mac. I've even had difficulty getting it to run on a friend's PC. Sorely missed opportunity for the gaming world, I'd pay $100 for a multi-platform re-release.

Don't read this.

I concur! The adventure game genre has been all but forgotten. What about Myst?

It is by caffeine alone I set my mind in motion,
it is by the beans of java that thoughts acquire speed,

Text based adventures like Zork. There's some really good storytelling in those games, one of my favorites is Aisle. It's a super short game, where one command ends the game, but each command reveals different things about the protagonist and builds layers to the story.

Other than text adventures (and admittedly what I spend the most time on) MMORPGs are where it's at, specifically Lord of the Rings Online.

You and I sir should date. I can't get enough of the Thief series, I've even started building my own fan mission and played through 53 others.
