Been with Vonage for about 5 years now. So tired of their price increases. From $20 a month to now about $360 a year ($30 a month).

I keep considering this seriously and today. I bought it. I have 6 months left on my Vonage service but that will give me time to test this new Ooma device.

I plan to use whatever new number they give me and just let my old number die. Everyone I know calls me cell and everyone else is a bill collector or trying to sell me something.

So hopefully Ooma will work well with my complex network (6 computers, 3 laptops, fax machines, wireless printer, blu-ray,tv, wii, xbox360, and a few mobile devices). Most of my network is wired so it shouldn't be hard to incorporate this.

I can not believe no one has mentioned the Obi alternative. Paired with Google Voice it is free monthly service and free long distance. I was researching the Ooma, when I happened across the obi option. I bought one and have been thrilled with it. The Obi110 sells for $49.00. The phone clarity and delay that sometimes plague VOIP has not been an issue for me on the unit, as it was on my cable voip that I was paying $20 per month for. I don't think I will get a Quality post for this, but you owe to yourself to check this out.

Does anyone know if you can use a fax machine with this? Is it just a regular phone port?

I've been a Ooma-er for 15 months. I bought my Hub from Amazon, and paid the $40 to port my number to my Ooma. During that time, the service (ALL of OOMA) was down once for ~2 hours. Generally, the quality is much better than the other phone services I had in the past (POTS Southwestern Bell, & VOIP's SunRocket, Comcast Phone, and PhonePower). I can't recall a single instance of hearing my voice delayed a short time and fed back to my receiver. All the other VOIPs I have used had this very distracting defect, among other problems at times.

The featurs set provided by Ooma is NOT as extensive as the other Voip's I have used, (Things such as Call Logs, etc.) But then again, if you really need that stuff, you can pay them $120 per year for their premium package. All I require is excellent phone connections, Caller ID, which the basic Ooma package provides perfectly!

When sending a fax, you dial *99 before the number, and it will optimize the call for fax.

Reference: http://www.ooma.com/app/support/star-codes-your-ooma-device

As for ownership transfer, the refurbished devices are considered "unowned" and your registration and service selection will be the same as anyone buying a new Ooma.

Ooma often has package deals if you buy a year subscription. Free full-Ooma-functionality handset, bluetooth adapter (I'm told you can even have it act like a headset for your bluetooth cell phone and transfer your call to the Ooma handset), or free phone number porting.

Yes. Call the DSL provider and ask for a dry loop. No phone just DSL. I've done it before wit AT&T and used my voyage thru DSL and saved on the land line cost.

I'm pretty sure it will. I use a different VOIP provider, but I've got DSL with no local phone service. I've still got a dial tone, so I can't use my house wiring, but I've got a cordless phone with four handsets (from sellout.woot), so that's not an issue.

I've had no trouble whatsoever sending or receiving faxes with the Ooma telo I got over a year ago here on Woot. Had a recent "no internet" problem occur even when my internet WAS fully operational but a couple of power cycling of router and telo solved that.

It can be a pain. On this model in order to receive fax's you have to change the settings to fax mode which messes up my voice calls.
http://www.ooma.com/node/485. I use online services to handle all my faxing since I switched to Ooma.

I love the Obi110 but have also heard that people love the Ooma offered here today.

The Obi/Google cost me $49 too and calls are free (as long as Google Voice is free).

Tough to beat almost free home phone service.

Make sure you have the min. upload web service of 256Kbps to meet min. req'ts.

Reminder from the bottom of the good Woot description below:

"Usage Requirements --> High-speed Internet service (minimum 256Kbps upstream)"

I wonder what you actually save. Because just for kicks I called Comcast last year and asked what it would cost to go from Triple Play (all the services) to just Internet and CableTV. I am paying something like $160/month. If I dropped the phone it goes down like $7. But if you called them to just get phone service its like $50. TOTALLY SCARED OF THE DARK NOW. They shouldn't be allowed to bundle like that. Because they know there is nothing standing between them and DIY VOIP.

Had it for well over a year and with software updates it got better and better. If you pay the 10 bucks a month for premium service you can even rig your Google number to work with your ooma service. I liked it and only switched because of a deal with comcast voip. The only caution is it was a huge hassle to port my number away from ooma!

Perfect phone quality, ditched the landline 4 years ago for Ooma and never looked back. Zero "lag" issues (can't imagine why someone would write that unless they've just got a totally messed up network on dialup or something?), once you get ported (if you mean to port), you'll likely never have to think about it again, it just works. You can use your old cordless phones or buy their telo handsets. If you're paying any kind of landline phone bill, or just miss the convenience of a number at home, Ooma is the best option. Say if you had ATT's "All Distance" at 40-50 a month plus, plus, plus = 70 a month post tax, that's like $1oo a month pre-tax. So $1200 a year, $12,000 every ten years. Considering you'll break even in just a couple of months, unless you feel sorry for, for instance, CIngular under the brand of ATT that they bought, and want to give them your extra money, this would be a good invenstment. Btw, of several Voip solutions I've tried, Ooma is hands down the best performing fax over VOIP of any of them. There's a setting you can choose to maximize, it's in the manual.

To be fair, haven't the 'increases' at Vonage all been regulatory(taxes & fees) increases, not actual price increases? I know, you're paying more either way, but it's not Vonage's fault if our inefficient gov't keeps adding things at the behest of the Bells.

True, or see about getting U-verse if you can, requires no phone line, just the internet is currently $38 a month for 12mbps down and not sure what going up but it's fast. (see slickdeals.net for the thread)

I remember Comcast. Started just like that. When my promotion ran out, I called to 'manage' my service. Spent the next hour learning that no matter what I dropped, they would get their nut. I have had OOMA for two years. I paid $205 for the hub and have paid nothing since. That works out to $8.54/month. No problems. I was worried about the company's viability, but am less so now. I had to invest in infrastructure for OTA TV, but that has worked out too. I used some of my savings to put a DVR and an Insignia BD player (mostly for Netflix) on each of my five sets. Very happy. My monthly entertainment budget is $55 -- $40 for 30/15 internet and $15 for Netflix streaming plus DVD. That is a savings of $105 off my BUNDLE PROMOTION. $1200/year. Free money. I'm not sure I need a land line anymore, but for those who do, this is a bargain. Very good quality with no hassles (I routinely forget I have OOMA).

DARN YOU WOOT! I was waiting for this, but could wait no longer and bought one at full price two weeks ago!

Regardless, I love it and you should get one. Faxing is no problem and it sounds great! Ported old number over too for $40. It took small amounts of coordination to get it all done, but it is quit painless and easy to use.

Woot - I will not forgive you...until something better comes along tomorrow. :-)

I've been a Vonage customer for 5+ years, but between the extremely positive reviews on-line (and from my fellow wooters! ) and Consumer Reports rating it #1, I'm in for 1. This has been tempting me at full price, and I've been waiting for it to pop-up on woot.

Even with $40 to port our number, this will pay for itself in about 6 months.

BTW - had to switch service with AT&T to a Dry-loop or "High Speed Internet" service alone. They were very helpful.
