Does anyone know if this comes with a remote? That would be a bonus.

Least to say none of us deal with JVC anymore!!

My first camcorder was a JVC and worked forever. Until my young child who was video'd as a baby had a school project and she dumped it on the floor by accident in 9th grade.

Funny, a friend of mine who has edited a few very famous, large network shows will only purchase JVC or Sony electronics for his home.

What I do when I purchase any electronics item, I buy the extra plan which is a lot cheaper than the one on here in retail stores and some websites. Be it a huge LCD/LED TV or a monitor, camera, anything that is known to break by accident or a manufacturers defect which can happen with any brand. Know what's been the worst for me? CANON! I will never purchase Canon again.

Since when is Samsung the gold standard of cameras or video cams as someone else suggested? Their LCD TV's supposedly are but the rest of the products I'm not sure about. Their wireless phones always s--ked and other Samsung products were fair to midland.

This is a $125 item out the door. It's cheap but has a lot of good features. Who the heck needs to take still shots with a video cam? Either use your smart phone, tablet, DSLR or point and shoot.

I don't agree with those of you knocking this deal. If you need it or like it, it's a good deal. If you can't afford it or don't need it and can't say a positive word, then just be quiet. I don't need it or I would be ordering it and I do order often.

Have a great Halloween, off to an adult Halloween party.

See "Low Light Performance" in this review:

Incorrect info!

That review is for the considerably more expensive GZ-HD40 model, not the GZ-HM30 on sale on woot...

I have a very time sensetive question: Can this camera be motified to capture an image or detect a cloaked Klingon Bird of Prey?

I hope no one's expecting to take high resolution pix with a camcorder. Oversimplifying it, 1080p/ 720p is at most 1920x1080. Not getting into dpi, but that's less than a 3MP still camera. Not good for professionals, or those expecting to print out larger photos.

But this camera is good for letting a teen or even younger kid experience what shooting a video or film is like. Or using it to record a school performance. But yes, camera phones are great for spur of the moment video, you know the whole "pics/ video or it didn't happen" crap.

Personally, I don't like putting my eggs all in one basket. So I bring my video camera with me whenever I feel like it. Same with my dSLR. If I don't bring it, so what? I missed out, but it's not my job.

But don't get me started on how camera phones will NEVER make dSLRs obsolete. Small sensor+low light at parties = lots of noise.

But then again, there are always the people who swear my the specs and megapixels and other features. They don't get that it's what's in the photo or video and how it's composed that's more important than the technology taking it. A well composed picture on a VGA camera is better than a blurry, poorly framed shot from a $2000 camera.

Consumer Report's Take

This Everio is an inexpensive basic model, with a long zoom and an excellent autofocus, but its image quality and battery life scores are lower than most. There are better choices among full-sized camcorders.

sucker4crap wrote:Don't even go there Johnny! Macs still set the standard for video editing & multimedia machines, no contest. I work with both platforms in a university lab with 300 machines and the stability of the Mac Pros is far better than the PC's. We've even replaced 150 Dell PC boxes with iMacs that run Windows 7 for those who prefer Windows.

The bottom line with this camera is that the propitiatory file packages are just frankly a pain in the rear compared to working with DV & mp4 files. Whenever you use the converter programs, it degrades the quality.

Unfortunately, we do not have the latest version of FCP "X" which can handle .mts http://www.iskysoft.com/topic-mts/import-mts-m2ts-files-to-final-cut-pro-on-mac-os-x.html

Mac or PC, that debate is over. I've been editing for 28 years, and build my on PC boxes, and integrate mac's for some clients. They both use the Intel chipset, etc. So, you can basically run Win7 or OSX on either box. My PCs are just as solid as my Mac.

And FCPX is imovie upgraded. None of my Pro Mac clients want it, some are changing to Adobe premiere, or GrassValley Edius(which NBC bought 200 boxes because of the realtime speed Without trans-coding). Actually, when I edited on a AVID-NS, that was one great editing system, but costs a fortune.

Eeep. Sorry about the problem there. Double check all the packaging and, if you're like me, the back of the camera. I'll be the first to admit I'm blonde.

If you still don't find it, email service@woot.com for assistance.

Bought one of these during the last offering and have used it for several 'events'
1)took it to Ireland in December: great (coat)pocket sized camcorder, could use it pretty much all day without running out of battery, but could see that if I was shooting A LOT it would be handy to have a backup.
2)birth of grand-daughter. Worked super well in ambient light and good sound quality
3)construction of addition to house. Put it on the tripod and set it up for 1 frame per second... great time lapse of the process as it happened.
That said, my only 'complaint' is lack of a viewfinder as I find it easier to hold it steady up against my face that way, especially if you are using long shots. But with it being so small, that was obviously not an option.
Over all, an enthusiastic thumbs up.

The JVC Everio is a beautiful little camera, amazingly light and with great zoom capability. The only problem I find with it is that Windows Media doesn't yet deal with the HD format it uses - I needed to download a video format converter - and the software that comes with it functioned essentially as malware for me. Once installed, it did just about nothing but prevent me from transferring files to my computer. Any attempt to retrieve the files directly, whether via camera-computer cable or from the memory card, resulted in the report that no video files existed. I had to uninstall the software to get to my own damn pictures. Sheesh.

Oh, another thing. The great zoom has developed a problem - at max zoom or anywhere close to it, the focus no longer works. I get wonderful soft focus closeups of...softly colored fuzziness. Can't even determine what I'm looking at. I haven't been mean to my camera, I swear.
