Hey, Woot? I can't afford this (bad stuff happened last month... expensive bad stuff), but if you want to stick one of these in my Big ol' Cornucopia I just bought, I would be one happy camper. It would be a sometime-in-November miracle.

Don't look at me, I'm hideous!

That's especially true after last month's floods shut down the Thailand factories where most HDDs are made. My suggestion is if you get this, wait until after Christmas to buy drives for it. You'll save some serious $$$ if you do.

Which is why you're supposed to be psychic and had purchased the drives last week.....of course, if you did that, you probably already have a network enclosure...........

I own one of these units. The network storage is a tad slow but I don't have to worry about my data being lost anymore.

I don't think you can find a more cost efficient way to protect your data at home.

Will this work as a print server without drives in it? I'm thinking no, but just wondering...

forever fighting the urge to buy something just because it is cheap and cool...wait, it's cheap and cool, let me click that big yellow button!

I would assume it works like an iPhone case without the iPhone. Pretty worthless.

I've had one of these for a few years now. I love it. It runs linux and it's very customizable as a result. You have to be careful which drives you get for it, though. It won't work right with many of the newer formatted drives.

I'm running the specific WD Green 2TB drives that are on the compatibility list:
http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=672.0

With customization, you can get it to work as a Time Machine for OSX. You can also set it up so that if you drop a .torrent file in the right folder it will auto-download the torrent.

And with RAID if one peice of toast burns the other one will be fine.

I bought model dns-321 a slightly lower model than this one and have been satisfied. It will not replace a free-nas box if that is what you want. But for external storage on a home network its not bad at all..
P.s. you can load a limited selection of "apps" on it.. most popular is a bittorrent client.

I had one of these before, the speeds arn't to great, luckily it was from newegg and I could return it within a month. I wasn't able to stream 1080p videos clearly over a 1000mbps network. Even with 720p videos, I have a large family and it couldn't keep up with two people streaming movies.

It's not a large device. Set your wireless router on top of it, plug it in and your ready to connect wirelessly.

Of course, you meant a non-copyright protected, legally downloaded torrent...something for educational purposes or sharing a business file from an out of state associate -LOL-

Meh, the flooding hit WDs Main 2.5" line and secondary 3.5" line in Bang Pa In. Seagate's factories are still high and dry in Korat. The flooding was a great excuse to rebound drive prices that have crashed for some time. If they can sell them at last months prices, any price increase is purely profit for those in between. As far as my knowledge of the extent of the flooding, until 2 weeks ago I was sitting next door to one of the numerous WD buildings in the Bang Pa In Industrial estate and have some great pics of water touching the top of their parking awnings. The day I left I took a boat into my subcon, wrapped my equipment with plastic and tape, throwing some heavy duty desiccant packs in there, then taking a boat back out. The sign at the front of my subcon is just taller than me and I'm 6', the sign was under about 6"s of water. Thankfully all of my equipment is about 20' up on the 2nd floor, which is technically the 3rd floor since they have a 3M full height mezzanine between floors.

Indeed. My nephew was staying with us last year and decided to use my internet connection to download a movie that way, and whatever movie studio it was tracked down the IP and sent a letter to my ISP. My ISP told me if it happened again, I would lose my DSL account. So not worth it.

Weird. I think you may have A)had a bad unit B)bad firmware issue B) 4k issue or C) had a switch issue/configuration issue etc. Definitely stop in the forums for help.

I guess with several people at the same time you could have a problem but most DNS-323 owners, myself included, can very easily do what you are talking about.

For example I just tested in my RAID 1 config, over wireless, Big Buck Bunny 1080P 12.5Mbps and it worked fine. Again that's over wireless with a healthy bitrate to boot. 1000mbps will have absolutely no problem doing this. Although I do concede that the DNS-323 won't approach real Gigabit Ethernet speeds. Anyway long story short 1080P is possible, actually people even do it over 100Mb. If you still have your 323 consider giving it another go or stopping by forums. Just google for the official or the unofficial forum.

Received mine yesterday but it wasn't the DNS-323 I was expecting. It was the DNS-326, which I can barely find any information on and it's not even listed at D-Links support site and the support ftp site has no files so good luck with finding firmware.

Ditto. This is not a DLink DNS-323, its a DNS-326 which apparently has no support from DLink. Very sad :-(

Same boat as you guys.

It looks like the DNS-326 is a non-consumer (business/corporate) version. Here are all the files relating to it:
http://tsd.dlink.com.tw/downloads2008list.asp?Category=eStorage

EDIT: Differences between the 323 and the 326 that I've noticed by looking through the manuals:
323
-BitTorrent
-switch from Non-RAID to RAID 1 without losing data

326
-No BitTorrent
-iSCSI
-FTP with TLS (encryption)
-FireFTP (FTP for Firefox)
-Kensington Lock hole
-Newer, but alternate version

I haven't ripped it apart yet to see if it came with any faster/extra microchips.

Sorry all. We're hoping that this isn't widespread and our vendor didn't send us the wrong model. Please email us at service@woot.com if you receive the wrong router and we'll get you taken care of.
