Nook Tablet and Kindle Fire do not have cameras which may or may not affect your purchase decision. Kindle Fire at $199 is subsidized based on the preloaded Amazon marketplace and content but in fairness they will not stop rooting efforts so I am sure google marketplace is about a week or so (after release)from being installed on one. They also have smaller screen sizes.

I would be all over this if it were more around the $150 price point. I already have a phone with android on it, and that's how much I paid for it(after rebates, contract, etc.)

A co-worker just got one of these. When he asked me to help him set it up on Wi-Fi I was immediately surprised at how heavy it was. Also noticed the glare from the screen immediately. It's nice to see an "affordable" name brand tablet but I'm still not sold on them.

A device hobbled by the fact it has no SD and no bluetooth, and only 8GB of memory.

So unless you want to carry a USB connector around with you, you are stuck emailing things to yourself if you want to transfer files to and from the Fire.

The Xoom is a great tablet. It's not much heavier than the iPad, and there are Flash plugins you can download - so unlike the iPad, this does play Flash...even though it's going away.

I use this with my cell phone after making the cell a wireless hotspot - I have full connectivity everywhere. Most of the time, I can find a wireless network anyway.

I really like this and carry it in preference to my netbook. It's not that much lighter than a netbook, but the battery lasts 8-12 hours and you can use it for a couple of days between charges.

The glass keyboard isn't as user-friendly as a real keyboard, but you can live with it.

Ummm...lets not and say we should have. Ipads suck!

People ask why I bought a Xoom and not an Ipad2...well here are 10 reasons:

10. Because it has a much better graphics processor.
09. Because it allows you to download apps that were not "approved" by Apple's app police.
08. Because you can customize the look of it to your desire instead of being stuck with brand mandated look.
07. Because you believe in individual freedom and are not a clone.
06. Because you support open source environments.
05. Because you dont' want to look like all of your friends.
04. Because you enjoy having real navigation instead of one button that takes back to the previous screen.
03. Because there are way more free android apps out there.
02. Because it would be really nice to see the adobe flash app on the page you are visiting.
01. Because Apple sucks and has way too many people hypnotized with their cult of brand identity.

I bought one for my wife a few weeks ago when it was on WOOT! To my eye, it looked brand new! Out of the box, powered it on, and it updated, and has been PERFECT! I purchased the Bear Motion Cover for it, it fits like a glove!

I have a BT keyboard she uses for typing documents. I was hoping my wife would not take to it, and I would have it for me. Unfortunately she has seriously fallen for it.

The XOOM is about a million times better than an Ipad! The battery life is quite remarkable! It seems to last forever on a single charge. One thing about the Xoom, unfortunately with the Xoom, I don't feel like I am better than everyone else, like those fruity fans....

I think it's winner, winner, chicken dinner!

I did my first w00t today! Been watching the site on and off for years. Finally signed up. I stayed awake for 48 hours straight waiting for the Xoom to come up in the woot-off. Almost pulled the trigger on a Bevy O' Commodities. But instead used that money to short sell Greek bonds in the European market last night and made enough cash to pay for the Xoom.

Anyway, back to my first w00t... Why don't I feel any different?

Although I do appear to be feeling a little smug. (I don't like the way the larger ones feel)

I bought one last time around. It was a lemon, and I ended up giving it to a guy at the dump.

Everyone was so busy addressing the crazy "oops we shipped the wrong one" fiasco that those of us with the "right" ones that weren't working got shoved to the side.

Motorola was absolutely impossible for me to get in touch with (long hold times, bad information when I finally did speak to them). I would NOT recommend anyone purchase this item if you have the SLIGHTEST reason to believe you'll need to deal with Motorola.

It was a $400 lesson learned for me, unfortunately, and I'll absolutely never buy one of their products again.

Does anyone know if the Xoom has the "security notch" -- that oblong hole a cable lock is supposed to go into?

I'd really prefer to have the option to lock a tablet to a closed-leg table or other facility. If I use it in a Kiosk mode, where I'm not watching the thing every moment, I'd like it to STAY PUT.

At least if someone had to hack through a steel cable, I've reduced the odds considerably that it would disappear, and these things are too easy to conceal.

tttony wrote:How is the viewing angle on the screen? I've got a gTab and the angle problems are annoying enough to want to upgrade.

The viewing angles and color quality will be better on the Xoom, but still inferior to the IPS screens found on most other tablets (iPad, Transformer, Galaxy Tab, Toshiba Thrive, Kindle Fire, HTC Flyer, Playbook, Touchpad, etc.).

I bought the Xoom on its release date and returned it because the screen was noticeably worse than my 1st gen iPad.

If you wait until Black Friday, you'll easily be able to get a new tablet for the same price with an IPS screen.

No I don't remember seeing it, and I would have noticed something like that. You could always use those discs that adhere and then DON'T come off! You might have to modify your case though. I have seen laptop cases that the laptop locks into, and the case locks to whatever. I haven't seen one specifically for the Xoom though.

Thanks for the reply. It's disappointing that no tablets seem to facilitate any PHYSICAL security! It's a personal item that people would want to have on their desk, but not necessarily have to pick up and carry everyplace. How obvious is it that locking it down, even to thwart the opportunistic kleptomaniac would be a good idea?

As with all touch-tablets, make sure you have some kind of cleaner. I've had mine for two weeks and it's pretty fingerprinted up.

It's unnoticeable unless the light hits it at a weird angle though or it is turned off.

*The Thrive is only 16GB, the Xoom is 32GB.
*The Thrive comes with a case on HSN
*The Thrive has a USB2 port
*Thrive has stereo speakers vs the Xoom single speaker
*Thrive weighs slightly more and is slightly larger in dimensions
*HSN shipping is $11.95 vs $5 for Woot

Still on the fence.

I have friends who have iPads that now wish they had this. It supports flash and supports a 32 GB micro SD card. You still have to attach it to the computer to install onto the SD card, but I have 64 GB total for a really low price. I can use most of the apps at the amazon store and droid maket, so I have a kindle reader and can watch movies on Netflix (had to do a little research to find the version that works on this but not a big problem). It has that a great screen. I did add Skinomi screen protector which takes care of the fingerprint problem on the screen. You can't even see fingerprints. Got a leather case and the Bluetooth keyboard on eBay. It allows me to stay connected anywhere I go. I have a Sprint EVO 4G with hot spot so no need for 3G in this. I am sooooooo happy!!

Wow...with a write up like this how can I go wrong. I'm in for one...like 10 minutes ago...hehe. I feel so much better now.
