Will this work with a Zune?

jgourd wrote:I have one of these things. The database of pre-programmed remotes is dismal. There are hardly any uploaded.

It also suffers from what every touch screen remote suffers from, no buttons. I am sorry but for a remote to be useful I need to be able to pick it up and use it without looking at it. Why should I have to divert my attention from the TV just to turn up the volume? Give me physical buttons any day.

Have to disagree with this. There are a LOT of remotes. And, sometimes people upload them without assigning "TV" or whatnot to them. If you just search "All" for "Sony", for example, you might find TV remotes there that weren't under "TV". That's what happens when users are in control of uploading. But, even without doing that, it has a ton. I've only found a couple of brands missing that were VERY off brands, that I'll probably set up myself.

As for the buttons... sure, I suppose... it can be used as an everyday remote, but that's not really the purpose. Things awesome when I've lost my remote, can't find it, and don't feel like tearing the house apart at that particular moment looking for it.

Someone asked if you can use it in multiple situations in a household. Yep, just switch between remotes that you have saved/stored, which takes a second. Again, pretty awesome. Of course, I bought mine before posting all of this. Heh.

I almost forgot, you can also use this with cameras that have IR receivers. It has pre-programmed menus in the app with different options for timing

I bought one of these for twice this price from Woot! a couple months ago. It's very cool, though I find I don't use it a lot since it's still not as simple as grabbing a real remote. I have to find the dongle, connect, run an app -- instead of just using what's sitting there ready to work.

I think it's most awesome for messing with the channels/volume when you are out at a restaurant, since you can download a remote for most TV's from the cloud.

I bought it for my iPhone 3G. Worked great, I didn't use a case anymore on that phone. Recently upgraded to a 4S. This dongle is the same thickness as the 4S. In other words, it isn't likely to fit with any kind of case on your phone. I haven't gotten around to cutting my Otterbox down so this can fit, so I'll probably never use the L5 again.

How can something be better than nothing if nothing is perfect?

I just ordered this as I have to many remotes. I loaded the L5 app onto my iPad to check it out and I noticed the remotes do not rotate when the iPad is turned over. Using the iPad app settings, I can manually tell the app to always display in a certain orientation, but when the iPad app setting for this app is set to "auto" for screen orientation, the remote display never changes no matter how the iPad is turned. I have a version 1 iPad. Has anyone else noticed this or even had this problem? Thanks!

Will it work without programming? Can I use it to turn off a tv in a doctor's office without having the doctor's remote?

No. Unless you have the same TV at home or elsewhere and can program that remote. muhuhuhhhahahahahaha

I bought this last time it was on Woot... and have been enjoying it ever since. It's replaced the basket of remotes that normally sat on my coffee table.

So far...I've had it work with everything I own... including my air conditioner and a couple of remote controlled fans. The set-up is pretty easy... though the "cloud" downloading is a little tricky to get used to. Because my entertainment center is behind glass doors...I've had problem with the reception of some of my regular remotes... but for some reason I get better range/signal with the L5.

It took me about an evening of fiddling to set everything up...upload my remotes... and then re-download them into my husband's phone. I'm seriously thinking that when I upgrade my phone, I'll keep my old 3G iPhone as an "iPodtouch" and make it into a dedicated remote and airtunes controller.

I was just about to shell out for one of those big old Logitech remotes... and I'm glad I took the chance on this one. If you already have an iPhone/iPad... it's a pretty good deal.

I bought this for my wife's iPod touch a while ago. It sucks. The UI for the app is clunky, but functional. The unbearable problem is that programming it is a real SOB. I could never get it to understand Tivo's channel down button. Lord knows why, but every other button on every other remote I tried worked (after multiple attempts usually).

It would be nice if they made better use of their download service and let people share remote codes (so you could just download the programming for the buttons instead of having to spend an hour trying to get the stupid thing to receive them one button at a time), but they don't. Stay away. Or better yet, look for mine on craigslist now that I remembered to get rid of this buggy thing.

No. It uses the iPhone/iPod docking connector and the app is iOS only.

No, The Roku 2 boxes are Radio remote (not IR). Which is great on the roku2, because there are no range issues, you can change things from another room, etc. But alas, it won't work with this remote.

For the Roku, I suggest getting the DVPRemote app - its great, works with all models (if you have WiFi in your house).

cheers!

Sounds like yet another fun woot gadget, but...

I have an iPod Touch, but being an old coot must wear reading glasses to use it. So, this would mean watching TV with my reading glasses either nearby or dangling from my face with this app.

Now I use a Harmony (also purchased from woot) remote that was easy to program online for my TV, cable box, DVD, etc. The buttons are OK without the reading glasses.

I guess this would be fine with the bigger iPad, but I have an HP Touch and am leaning towards an Android tablet as well. However, a nice Black Friday price on an iPad could change that thinking and then I would consider this item.

Don't really need this for your Roku box as there is an app for that. DVPRemote works great for me.

It only rotates when the dongle is inserted and recognized.

Yes, the Ipad makes it a jumbo remote, and the buttons have more room for fat fingers!

Can someone explain how this would actually work at a bar? No bars that I've gone to have the cable box under the TV, I've seen them stacked in the back somewhere a few times. So how exactly would this work?

And I'm assuming this works with all Comcast boxes as well...

Might be a great Christmas gift for your iOS wielding parents/relatives who can't figure out their 5 remote setup. A lot cheaper than a $200-$300 logitech remote.

You don't need this for Roku, you can use an app.

"just download an app called DVPRemote. It works off of your wifi connection and you can control the Roku from anywhere in your house. I think the app is $1.99 but it is well worth it. You can also set it up to control multiple Roku's. The keyboard feature is also extremely useful."

Also, "On my iPhone I point Safari to http://apps4tv.com/remoku, give it my Roku's home LAN IP address and it works just fine. Also means searches much faster to type the terms rather than using the nav buttons on the remote."

I hope this helped. :^)

This device http://www.tvbgone.com/cfe_tvbg_main.php claims to be a universal off switch. It apparently sends a sequence of OFF codes (for up to 69 seconds!) for a wide variety of TVs. Would today's Woot work with that?

Could this device be used to hack IR headphones (say, to record sound bites) http://www.wisegeek.com/what-are-infrared-headphones.htm?

Not sure if this remote will do it, but it should if it has a 'learning' feature.

I bought one of these to try out, but also have a Sony RM-VLZ620 that will learn every single button on every single remote you have with it's learning feature, and its just as cheap as this one. Though it wont let you personalize the buttons like this one will.

With a learning remote, all you have to do is point the old remote at it and push the button you want to teach it...after pushing a couple buttons on the new one to set it to learn.

I hope this iPod one has a macro feature on it, my Sony remote does and I can push a single button and it turns on my TV, surround, and DTV....I have another macro set to turn on the TV, switch to AV, turn on my Xbox, then turn the surround on and to Game mode. Macros are a sweet thing!

It would constantly loose "synch" so you would have to unplug it and plug it back in. It also wouldn't fit with a case on the phone so you would have to take it off.

I guess it's possible they have improved it, but I'll stick with my Harmony.

Because this piece of hardware is needed to work with the free app. This is basically a very small "dongle" that you plug into your iPod, iPad, or iPhone, and it is what allows your iPxx device to send and receive the IR signals that control your TV, DVR, VCR, etc. The free app is what you use to configure and control this piece of hardware. You can load the free app and play with it, create some remotes and whatnot, but it is not really usable until you have this additional hardware dongle. ..Mike

Roku has a remote app on the app store that is awesome - I doubt this remote adapter will work with Roku because Roku doesn't use IR.

I did that once on eBay. Bid $200 on a network tester, got an email that evening saying I'd been outbid, looked at it again, decided not to raise my bid, took an Ambien and went to bed. Got up the next morning to find I'd won the auction for $400!

Still, it could have been a lot worse.

(I did this too, sometimes, although more like a midnight snack than a massive binge (at least from what I could tell from the kitchen the next morning).)

Consequences aside, it's just creepy to find out you have done things that you have no memory of. I quit taking Ambien immediately after the $400 network-tester incident.

I don't know about the iPhone but I got a free app for my DroidX from the Android Market made for DirecTV and yes it does have all the same funtions. However this app will only work for the DVR and the reciever must be connected to your home network via rj45(wired internet)Using this app seams to be slightly quicker than the DirecTV remote with no lag.

Oh, man, I'm so glad this item is back! Last time they were available several months ago, it sold out while I was literally on the final order screen.

This remote will be essentially perfect for me. There are a LOT of devices around my house that I could program in, as well as multiple iOS devices I can put the app on (and sync my configuration to).

Thanks, Woot!
