The bottle opener would have been nice, but the price is too good on this one.

VERY tempting.

I have the non-CX version, and I love it...

HOWEVER! The edge about halfway up the blade is almost folded over on itself. Not sure if warranty covers this or not.

So the question is: send it in and hope it is, or pay what I paid for mine (got mine on ebay) to get the upgrade version with better steel (albeit no serrated edge), a cool black finish, and carbon fiber?

Decisions, decisions...

But the Leatherman site mentions that the Freestyle CX definitely has both screwdiver attachments and a bottle opener. Am I wrong?

I was just reading that. It's a mistake--

Someone at Leatherman must have copy-pasted the description for the Skeletool CX and forgot to remove the driver bits/carabiner from the description. The Freestyle has neither.

Two comments about the knife:

  • The blade can be accessed one-handed. This is a VeryBigDeal(tm) if you use the knife a lot, and it's a newer trend from Leatherman's stuff. My daily-carry is a Charge TTi, and I'll never own another multi-tool without one-hand-open for the knives, now that I've had it.
  • The blade steel is very good, especially for the price. See here for a good rundown of typically-available knife steels, but expect this to take a good edge, and keep it for a while.
That said: this is much more like the Skeletool than the Charge: just pliers and a very good knife. If the construction is anything like the Skeletool, I'd expect the pliers to feel a bit flimsy (under any kind of twisting action) compared to the more substantial options, but you're getting a much lighter and compact unit here, which can be useful.

If this kind of thing interests you, see knifeforums.com and multitool.org for a couple of good sources of information.

I'm having a very hard time not clicking the yellow button right now given the price, but I definitely don't need another multitool. :P

Leatherman is a US company (Portland, OR, actually), and 154CM (the blade steel in the knife) is an American-made "stainless" steel.

Which means it could be put together by Kathie Lee's kids, but the steel is still good stuff. Sadly, many American companies have gone to China for the manufacture of their knives.

Man, i was all ready to jump on this but it's way too small and that clip , to me looks like if you were to take it off it would not hold that silver thing down any longer.

The Video I just watched has a dude with tiny hands and it looks small in his hands, in my hand this would look like a tooth pick.

screw drivers and stuff are all in my gerber but i would like to try leatherman next.

Multi tools are in my reg wardrobe- i cannot go without one, this one has no sheath and a pocket clip aint gonna cut it.

I hope You guys come up with a full sized tool soon.

See the Portland, OR link I posted above. Their manufacturing is done in Portland; you can take a factory tour if you're in the area.

I have been using a Leatherman Core for about six years and I still love it. Couldn't resist having a lighter option like this around. Yeah, it would be great if it had a screwdriver too, but for this price I won't complain.

A multi-tool is only useful if you have it with you. I've found the Leatherman Squirt P4 to be the most useful multi-tool because it's on my key chain. My SOG S63 is so bulky I have to make a conscious decision to take it with me. The pliers on the squirt are perfectly adequate for yanking out fish hooks plus it has many more attachments. I'd rather have the freestyle in some situations but I know I'd only carry it around if I was expecting to get into those situations.

Just bought Christmas presents!

I've been carrying the predecessor to the Leatherman Crater C33TX for years (I don't know what my own model is but it's nearly identical). I've found the pocket knife first, multi-tool second approach to be far superior to the folding pliers first approach. Sure there's less total functions, but they're the functions I use less, and the much easier access to the knife and the more convenient carry method more than offsets the less tools.

I've missed my pliers. Personally I'm going to carry this in one pocket, keep my Crater in the other pocket, and I've had a Leatherman Micra on my keychain forever. I really do find this to be a better approach than a single all in one tool, and with more than one knife to chose from I'm more likely to have at least one that's sharp if I'm not on top of things.

See? You don't need a bottle opener. You just use the pliers to open the bottle.

And you don't need a screwdriver because you can grab the screw with those pliers too. Works fine for both slotted and Phillips head.

I agree on the bottle opener, but the screws not so much. You have no idea how many blood blisters I've given myself by not having a good enough grip on something with pliers and pinching my own hand when they slip off. It's not being weak either, quite the opposite, it's just metal doesn't always grip metal well.

Without the screwdriver bits, its only half a multitool. I want to jump for the price but you really want screw driver bits in a multitool

I don't know what you have against Gerber, which is definitely NOT a wannabe brand and is decades older than Leatherman. I own a Leatherman and several Gerber tools including the new Bear Grylls model which is now my favorite.

This is a great deal on a decently designed Leatherman. Everyone has their favorite knife options and there are so many different models out there it shouldn't be difficult to find a really good fit.

I finally joined Woot (I've looked for years and years - literally since day one AFAIK) and never once have I purchased anything from here. I didn't buy the knives for me, instead I grabbed three of them for family members as Christmas gifts.

I own a Leatherman but it is not my knife of choice. I carry a Swiss Army knife though I have a longer folding knife from Gerber that I also carry.

I wouldn't have grabbed three if I wasn't certain that the knives are well made and have an excellent warranty. I've had two friends who have broken their knives and had to send them back - that's good customer service if you ask me. In both cases I'm pretty sure they had to be doing things that exceeded the 'normal usage' of the knife in order to break it. Either way, the company was happy enough to replace them so I'm impressed.

Great stocking stuffer. In for two. Leatherman is a quality tool. I have an old one that is always with me on outings. This would be nice if they threw in a case, but for this price it can't really be beat.

Nice! I'm in for 2. I like how the shipping is per order, not item. Question, is 3 the max? I didn't see a way to order more than 3 and would have ordered 4 if I could have(two for presents).
1/2 price of Amazon ain't bad!
Oh I also have a more full featured Gerber that I carry on my belt almost everyday(like it better than comparable Leathermans) but no doubt Leatherman is quality and I like the looks of this little guy.

For the record Gerber and Leatherman both make stout products, I prefer the Gerber because the one hand opening feature has never failed. I have a leatherman wave that won't open now after using the wire cutter...even 2 handed. This freestyle should handle whatever you throw at it and Leatherman is great about warranty support

Skeletool is a bit longer and heavier. Skeletool includes a small carabiner on the end that will clip to your belt loop or open a beer bottle, plus a screwdriver.

I owned the Skeletool, lost it, then bought this one to replace it (Freestyle CX). I like this one better because it is smaller and has the same sturdy blade and plier. I've carried this knife in my pocket for about two years.

If you plan to keep it loose in your pocket, this is the best choice. If you plan to keep it clipped to your belt loop Skeletool is more feature-packed (better?).

I have owned a Leatherman Wave and a Leatherman Squirt for years, and love them both. They are still in my possession and frequently used.

I purchased the CX because I'm looking for a basic tool that is in between the Squirt and the Wave in functionality.

The Squirt has a lot of micro-tools on it, and most of them are useful only for small or intricate jobs. The Wave has a lot of the larger tools and I use it almost everyday for random things (I also have the bit driver add-on for that) but can be bulky and heavy.

Therefore the minimalistic approach to the CX is a good middle ground if you're looking for less weight, but the ability to be used daily, while having good tool functionality.

Nobody knows how to use the tool as a lever to open a bottle? I can open a bottle with a mini bic. So can most of the people I know. Granted we might have too much practice. In for 3. May post a video using one to open beer bottle when they arrive.

Actually "DLC" means "diamond like carbon" so it is not redundant to call it a DLC Coating.

Wish I had got to this deal before it sold out.
