My husband is dying for a iPad for xmas. He has done his research and has narrowed between an iPad (either new or Best Buy refurb) or the Acer Iconia. He wants to use it to take notes during business meetings, play games, and watch movies.

Will he like this? Would this be an appropriate replacement for the other 2 he's already looked at? We have Android phones and he's really happy with that platform, but he has an old iTouch that he has really enjoyed and knows there is a lot available when its comes to Apple products.

I really appreciate your help. Thanks.

go for the ipad. You can get a used ipad (as opposed to the ipad2 for about the same price and you won't regret it. Hubby had the viewsonic tablet bought on woot that my son recofigured and it was fine, but he definitely prefers my ipad!

angelam16 wrote:Any opinion on HP touchpad vs this zoom? I can buy a touchpad cheaper, but will it have the same support and upgrades?

The status of support and upgrades for the Touchpad is uncertain. HP is expected to determine where they're going with it in the next few days. I'm happy with the one I got for $99 but I wouldn't pay more than $200 for another one at this time. Inability to sync its browser with your desktop and lack of netflix app are the 2 chief complaints. It's really hard to import bookmarks and passwords! I installed the cyanogen mod so I can run android on it when I need the few things it's lacking. I really prefer WebOS to Android. I find it's much easier to navigate. The app selection is decent. I think we're going to see a ton of tablets like this xoom on sale as vendors introduce ice cream sandwich and quad core tablets so I wouldn't be in a hurry to buy this. I'd be waiting for Boxing day.

How does it work with no buttons?
Thanks in advance!

Search the Android Market for emulators. You'll find a few along with sources for ROMs. From there, just try out the different ones and see which ones you like best. (Although a heads up: Some of these things fling ads at you like a Woot screaming monkey flings poop. Read the descriptions, comments and reviews, and permissions carefully.) All of the emulators let you decide where to put the on-screen buttons, and most of them give you options on how "fuzzy" they are in case you have big or small hands that don't always hit the on-screen icon every time.

Bought one last time. Great tablet, especially the WiFi reception - it finds hotspots all over the place. Mine came loaded with the updated software: ver 3.2.1, and the original owners music library - some great tunes; it doesn't look like they do a hard reset before sending it out. I don't mind, but the music, and some of the pics are funny. I did have to download an app to view movies.

I bought the Xoom the last time around and it is the first Android device I have really loved. All of my other Android devices have been slow and quirky. I love my Xoom.

I am glad I didn't see it was being offered again. My wife keeps stealing mine (she actually has it right now) and it would have been hard not to get a second one.

btw... saw the Xoom listed at Fry's for $500.

I picked up a couple of free movie downloads from Best Buy and their 8 Days Of christmas Movie promotion and loaded them to my laptop. The movies are in wmv format. I have the Xoom and downloaded Moboplayer. Will Moboplayer play the wmv format or do I have to convert the movies?

Great Tablet. Been having a lot of fun with it and no complaints.

Don't be concerned about the "Refurbished" thing. Mine looks brand spanking new and has been rock solid from the get-go.

If you're looking for a tablet, this is the one. Have at it.

I did the same thing (I'm actually writing this on the Xoom). I couldn't be happier with this tablet. One of my favorite things about the tablet is the built in GPS and Google Maps 5.0. Gmaps 5.0 caches whole city data so when you are out of wifi you still have a whole city down to the highest level of detail downloaded. I put the tablet in my bikes saddle bag, turn on GPS and have it record my track. When I get lost I just pull out the tablet and have my location right there on the map. That is just one feature, I haven't used most of the other specs on this. I ordered a stylus so I can draw on it and I plan to get a bluetooth keyboard and headset. Oh, and I forgot to mention it has an app for navigation!

This tablet is extremely well built and has every feature under the sun. To not get this tablet at this price would be stupid.

I really enjoy my Xoom! I purchased a refurbished one offered as Amazon's Gold Box deal of the day late October. It works like a champ. It was offered by Amazon but fulfilled by woot for the same 32g WiFi model. I purchased the AYL slim leather cover/case and can't recommend it enough. The picture on Amazon shows a different 'shade than the actual case, it's black leather with a grey interior.

My other top two accessories that I purchased right away were a 6 foot micro HDMI to HDMI cable. Media bridge has an excellant cable on Amazon. Be sure you get the correct compatible cable to stream from your xoom to your TV (with Ethernet). The media bridge cable is only $8.99 right now at Amazon, much cheaper than the Motorola HDMI cable. The other cable that you should get is the Camera connection cable. It is a micro USB connection(male) to a female standard USB to plug your existing camera cable into. It was $20 last I checked.

I downloaded the Dolphin HD browser to use on my tablet because you can default your browser to a desktop, android, ipad setting. I usually keep the android default but with a flick I can switch to desktop setting for the websites that assume all mobile devices are only 4" screen.

Thanks to all for the head up on the Motorola store specials. I've been randomly checking their prices but haven't since Black Friday. I got the HD speaker dock, and the blue-tooth keyboard which will come in handy for my Wii also!

Since Google is purchasing Motorola, and they have already confirmed that the Xoom will be getting ICS about 6weeks after full launch on new products this xoom will have a long life ahead of it.

My only annoyances to date are some of the buggy apps, but its some of the growing pains of consolidating all the versions of the android OS. There are still some capabilities that the xoom hasn't fully realized yet, and I'm hoping that ICS will take full advantage of this hardware more. Lets put it this way, windows Vista is far more squirrely than the Honeycomb platform running apps! Plus you know ahead of time which apps are more invasive to your privacy before downloading, or by using vodoo or lookout to check your more invasive apps and what they are doing..unlike Apples veiled clandestine OS.

I think-believe this is an "android" issue... I have a IPAD (jailbroken) that connects to my jailbroken Iphone's wifi connection with no problem, bought a Android Tablet (Vizio Vtab) and it will NOT connect to "iphone hotspot"... this is really stupid... and there is no "EASY" fix unless you want to 'ROOT' your android tablet... (I HOPE... there is some brainiac wooter out there who can show me the errors of my ways and point out a simple solution to this problem)... good luck to you!

Think about it this way...new units coming off a production line don't get 100% inspection on all aspects of the device, just spot checks. Refurb units get 100% check on everything before they go back out the door. I know one issue they have had with the Xoom was the audio jack.

It's actually dependent on the tablet. The Xoom can't connect to ad-hoc wifi networks (Those generated by handheld devices) while the Galaxy Tab and the Eee Transformer can. It's all about the wifi radio they chose to use with each particular tablet. It's not really something you can just fix.

i bought one of these for my mom, but she no longer uses it so she gave it to me.

it's an okay device. don't get me wrong, i'm sure if i knew what to do with it, i'd use it a lot more and find much more value in the device, but i tend to use my laptop more than i use this device.

i was happy to find that netflix supported this device, but i'm not happy with netflix's performance. the video and audio are almost out of sync and the video seems to run a bit choppy at times. then there's the spotify issue. $10 a month to get spotify to run on my phone and this device, and spotify always comes across as off-line with the xoom.

also, and i'm sure this is an android issue, but once you run an app, you can't shut it down, even with these task killing applications.

anyways, after that long schpeel, since i made the purchase, i'd like to get some value out of the device. can someone recommend "must-have" apps? i'd really like something that lets me hand write notes.

I have personally been able to connect my Wifi Xoom to my Droid X via Bluetooth and use the internet on the road. I don't even pay Verizon the extra money for the HotSpot. I use it for free. Let me know if you want to know how to do it. Simple process via Bluetooth and no jailbreaking.

But you're using bluetooth, which is far far slower than a wifi connection. It's a fix but it's not ideal.

I don't notice much difference that when using Wifi at home, maybe a little slower. But slightly slower internet connection for free on the road can't be beat.

I got this when woot had it a couple weeks ago, and I love it. The only issue I had was last Monday, when it stopped charging. A quick trip to the Verizon store told me that it was the charger, not the unit. Motorola not only shipped me a new charger, but sent me a dock as well. Works for me!

ivanivanovich wrote:If 90% of what you want to do is read books, I suggest an e-reader with a black and white e-ink screen. (And among those, I recommend Kindle.) They're lighter than tablets (easier to hold), cheaper, and for many people, easier on the eyes.

If you want to browse the internet on the same device, though, or watch videos or play almost any games other than chess and sudoku, you pretty much have to go with a tablet of some kind (including the Kindle Fire and Nook Tablet).

Guaranteed that 7" tablets are easier to hold, and easier to hold for long periods, than 10" tablets. Tablet size doesn't figure into eyestrain, though, because reader apps let you change text size (and so do e-ink devices).

The reader applications on some 10" tablets will show you two pages at a time, others won't. I find one book page on a 10" screen just wrong-looking. A newspaper or magazine page probably works much better on 10" devices, but I don't know.

Kindle and Nook apps are available for all Android and iPad tablets. Nook doesn't seem to be available for the HP TouchPad, and I haven't seen either one for the Blackberry PlayBook.

And when I say Kindle and Nook apps are available for all Android tablets, I mean you can even put the Nook app on a Kindle Fire and the Kindle app on the Nook Tablet. You have to be really persuasive and show your tablet who's boss, but it can be done.

(Rooting isn't required, but some other shenanigans are. No risk of breaking the tablet or its software, and nothing that takes more than a few minutes.)

Hope that helps!

Thanks very much! Merry Christmas!

The Xoom weighs about the same as a 700 page hardcover book. There is a kindle app for it.

The tablet is better for reading anything with illustrations, but for most reading I use the kindle. I haven't noticed any difference in eyestrain.

Absolutely. End of Jan/Feb are house cleaning month for computers. These will drop as soon as the newer models come out (anybody buy a Nook 2 months ago? hmmm.....)
