Anyone who was expecting military issue night vision goggles from Woot....well.....

Anyone expecting military grade night vision for less than a few thousand dollars from ANYWHERE....well....

$30 might get you military grade socks...

Welll ... no.

"Real" night-vision technology - the kind that costs "real money" - does the light-enhancement thing. In theoretical, absolute darkness they'd be useless.

These do detect infrared, light that's just a bit shorter in wavelength than the red our eyes can see.

("What kid and/or posthuman biomech couldn’t use a set of built-in infrared illuminators allowing vision up to 50 feet in complete darkness?")
But not to the point of being able to do thermal imaging.

So they enhance your vision not by gathering more light in the visible range of wavelengths, but by extending the range of wavelengths you can detect by just a bit. (And then converting the not-visible to visible.)

Hypothetically, could one replace their LCD monitor back-light with an IR bulb, buy this nifty item, and game in TOTAL darkness until the wee hours??? I mean, I think the days of ambient monitor light are over...

If they're like those in my security cameras, you'll see a red glow. Makes it harder to stalk someone. Clarice would have shot them right out.

The big LEDs can be switched on/off. With them off, I don't think anything else glows, but I'm not positive.

The very reason that these use an LCD screen and a camera - all cameras see the light given off by IR LEDs.

Sad.

Yup. They're IR, but only near-IR bands (normal CCD/CMOS is sensitive there). Heat is much longer wavelengths.

Either the Burgandy Olfactory Center is up next and they are trying to save their servers, or they knew this item sucks and they are tired of hearing us complain.
