I want to get this for ESPN3 and for viewing videos using an HDMI connected from the tablet to the TV. Does the Vizio have any problems doing this? Is there lag or quality degradation? Does anyone who currently own this use this alot for HDMI purposes? what has been your experience.

Yes, I survived the April Fool's woot-off with "the woot we do not speak of" with no B.O.C to show for it.

If I don't like it, I suppose I could get most of my money back if I decide to sell it on the bay. There's a new one approaching $200 with two days left to go. Hmmm what to do?

In for 2. Having read a few different forums on tablets, there doesn't seem to be one that pleases all it's users.

Basically, find one from a reputable company that meets your price point and go with it.

Eventually, these will follow the "razor blade" model and be given away when you sign on for 3G/4G service just like phones.

What ever happened to trademark infringement? What a rip off. $159.99 is too much for any knock off. It doesn't even have a fake apple on it. Do they sell these with a bite out of an orange?

Looks like it should arrive by x-mas. It will at least be in your area before then, and you can always drive to it's location and pick it up.

Rather than discuss iOS vs Android, I thought I'd share my first-hand thoughts with the VIZIO Tablet.

PROS:

  • 1024x768 resolution is definitely better than 1024x600 found on most 7" tablets.
  • Innovative 3-speaker system actually works decently for stereo output
  • Still fairly portable for the size, even with the slightly oversized bezels
  • Decent IR universal remote app
  • Mini-HDMI port (although I didn't try it out)

CONS:

  • Very poor viewing angles. Very disappointing considering their TVs have been good for me.
  • A little on the heavy and thick side
  • Overall performance seemed sluggish compared to my Galaxy Tab 7; not sure if it is Hummingbird vs Marvell CPU

OTHER COMMENTS:

  • Very unlikely to receive an official ICS port.
  • Not much "hacker" support, so also doubtful it'll get an unofficial ICS port.
  • Requires "optimized" Adobe Flash (which is pre-installed). Newer "normal" Flash updates will not install

Not a bad tablet, but you need to accept it for what it does today and not expect much more from it. (I wanted to like it and keep it, but ended up returning because of the screen viewing angles.)

People, this is not a "honeycomb" tablet for the umpteenth time--it is a Android 2.3 phone based system and that is why it is being fire saled out at a 159.99. Honeycomb has recieved two upgrades and works especially for tablet sized applications. "Ice Cream" sandwich is really going to be Honeycomb 4.0 and it will be evolutionary off of 3.2. This Vizio will become a paper weight within the year. Still for 40 bucks more, buy a new Kindle Fire which will have support for the forseeable future (2 years in tech land).

For $10 more here at Woot, you get a case. If you're in the market to buy this, Woot is the better option, especially since this size tablet is uncommon and case choices much more limiting. BTW, the unit sold at Sears is also refurbished ("Remanufactured").

I second the motion. Further, How can you possibly take the comments and reviews on that so-called scam reporting site seriously?
My first red flag popped up at the name of the site. I wouldn't click on a link called "free-iPhones.com"; why wold I trust an alleged scam reporting site that apparently has no actual connection with any trade organization nor government agency?
The next glaring turn-off is the rampant abusive and racist language used in the posts and comments. One person actually claims that he got his item (an mp3 player) sooner than expected, it did more than advertised, and generally outperformed his expectations. Then he goes on a racist rant that would make Archie Bunker balk...simply because he abhors all things Chinese. More correctly, he seems to hate his own mental image of China and its people, but that's probably far to complex a concept for his (or her) narrow mind.
How can one possibly take the opinions of such a person seriously, no matter what the subject?

More on topic: I have a similar Vizio tablet. It's older and slower than this one, and I paid over $300 for it. I love it, and would highly recommend this unit. It's obviously not a high-end gaming computer, but I've used mine to watch movies on airplanes, get a map from the ubiquitous free WiFi in California, and most recently, to price-match in-store on Black Friday.
Instead of waiting in line for hours at ToysRUs, Walmart matched prices on the spot. No waiting!

well, I finally broke down and got one. My friends have ipads, but I refuse to pay $500-700 when my netbook works just fine. Like the movie sound which my netbook for some reason won't do and I found it out in the middle of a flight (sucked). So I have a new toy this Christmas just in time to take to SoBE with the boyfriend! When I want to upgrade, guess what the parents will get for Christmas next year?

Unless you want an SD card slot, bluetooth support, Android Market, a camera, a microphone or an IR remote. Because the Fire has none of those.

Also this product includes a case, while the Fire does not.

Depends. If you mean an IPSec VPN that needs to connect using group authentication, the answer is probably "not out of the box".

Keep in mind I do not own one of these.

However on my (2.2, not 2.3) android phone, I was able to (with root access) get the VPNC Widget from the android market. That works to connect me to the work VPN.

However, this would require 2 things - 1) root access on the tablet (probably doable), and 2) a tun.ko module for the tablet . On the second point I have no idea (since I don't own one of these tablets , I am not up on all the ins and out)

So I won't say it is impossible, but unless this is a special case (or unless 2.3 has more stuff than I knew about) then it will take some "hacking" to get the VPN running properly - assuming the group authentication type is what you are looking for.

How the tablet market changes. Just 6 months ago this would be a steal. There was a ton of youtube videos of people buying those horrendous ipad knockoffs from obscure Chinese companies for around this price.

Now people can get a reputable and competent tablet at 165. That said, unless you have a pressing demand to have a tablet, then I would definitely hold off b/c turnover rate in the tablet market is crazy.

Finally decided on 2.
Was in for one 100% for my mom, but on the fence for myself. I have been drooling over the Xoom or Transformer, but don't see those going under 300 any time soon. Then add in the case, keyboard... too much for me to justify the cost vs how I'd be using it... this one seems perfect. Also as someone mentioned, when comparing it to the 7" and 10" tablets, this seems to be a perfect size to keep it portable, but offer up enough viewing space.
And to keep things in perspective, the CPU/RAM is the same as my phone, which runs all of the apps I've thrown at it just fine. I'd be wary of getting a tablet with 256MB, but 512? na it'll do.
Worst case, if I don't like it, looks like it'll be easy to make my money back on CL or ebay (probably make money if I'm patient enough)

NascarDad

Of course if I get this instead of the Samsung Plus that I like so much , then I may still be able to swing getting one of the new tablets next year like the Transformer Prime.. hmmm..

I am looking at this as more of a universal remote +media/streaming player

In that view , this doesn't look so bad.

Considering a basic harmony one remote is $150, the added feature of streaming video and music, playing Angry Birds and watching digital media, as well as reading magazines through zinio makes this a steal.

Add "in a pinch" googling and web access, makes this a perfect addition to my coffee table.

In for 2 after reading reviews on newegg, amazon, and vizio (neg and pos), this will suit my needs, hopefully at some point I can upgrade to honeycomb or ice cream if not oh well. I ordered 2 android tablets with 2.2 and they were very glitchy and tempermental. They were 99 a peice so for peace of mind I will spend the extra 60 a piece for these. Hope WOOT is right on shipping and they make it by christmas. Boy am I glad I didn't jump on any of the Cruz offers lately. Thanks WOOT for helping me finish my shopping. I owned one for a few weeks I got from Costco for $189 - jumped ship for the BF best Buy Acer A100 for $189. Anyway, it will do skype video - the front camera is not HD - but it will do Skype video - I did it.

Also I did not find the universal remote to be anything close to a Harmony...figure it will work in a pinch on most components - but the nice macro integration it did not appear to have - though I did not play with the remote control app for more than 30 minutes.

It says it has an IR Blaster. Does that mean, with the right software, it could be a pretty cool home theater remote? It's priced about the same as a mid-grade remote, but should give you the "feel" of one of those neat full touch screen ones! (Assuming you have line of site to all your equipment).

Everyone keeps talking about how it's not as fast as an UberTablet9000 version 7 or whatever. Stuff like this is awesome if you can find a good purpose for it :P I would totally use this as a home theater remote, or keep it in the kitchen for recipes, or other cool low-end tasks that I either can't do with my iPad, or wouldn't want to do with my iPad.

Yes - I too was disappointed with the HP Touchpad sale on ebay 12/11. It thoroughly sucked - so in revenge mode I bought one of these Vizio tablets. Still I needed a new remote -and one for the "library" - so it fits the bill.

HP - hope you clean up your act - you have had several major episodes of stepping on your dong.
Maybe with the new CEO - things might get better.
