Bought mine a month ago when HSN had it for $329 including the portfolio case. Really do love it, and use it mostly for email, web browsing and games. At this price you can't go wrong - even the used units on Craigslist go for $300, $350 or more!
Can I replace the battery when the time comes or is it like the other tablet?
The Toshiba Q&A says Skype may not be compatible with the Thrive. Has anyone used video chatting with the Thrive? Does Skype work adequately?
Pulled the trigger! Merry Christmas, Dad & Mom.
michaelmidwest wrote:Playbook has it, and I think the TouchPad does too, but cannot recall nor want to walk over to my other room to confirm.
Ah, just goes to show how few I've looked at! :-) None of the other ones I was shown at Staples (Samsung, Acer, Xoom) had this. Cool feature though!
I'm in for one. The full size ports and the user replaceable battery are what sold me. I plan on rooting it asap to get rid of the bloatware.
WindRunner wrote:If I had wanted a Wi-Fi only tablet, this would've been my choice. Also glad I didn't though, as I would've bought it at a higher price than this! Definitely the best price I've seen for a Thrive all season.
Got mine for $289 Brand New 16gb model on a cyber monday deal. But yea, 289 is in fact the cheapest I've seen--and I've been tracking the price since Sept.
www.thriveforums.org The thrive will be getting ICS next year. All roms are rootable. The screen is very fragile. I have accidental damage on mine, have had it for a month and the screen is already broken. THIS IS NOT GORILLA GLASS! BUYER BEWARE IF YOUR LOOKING FOR RUGGEDNESS
sfhobbs wrote:The Toshiba Q&A says Skype may not be compatible with the Thrive. Has anyone used video chatting with the Thrive? Does Skype work adequately?
Skype works beautifully with both front and rear facing cameras. Have logged hours on skype with my thrive. ooVoo works as well.
I wonder if this can be connected to the web via a dsl cable? I have a relative that would like to do game downloads via dsl and then use them later.
paltex9 wrote:Can I replace the battery when the time comes or is it like the other tablet?
The battery is replaceable. They last a solid 10 hours too. Under normal to heavy use.

It will connect through wifi. They will need a wireless router hooked to their DSL modem.

I'm guessing he's asking this b/c a direct connection will be MUCH quicker than wifi. I wonder the same... and assume it's a yes.
I hit up the other 3 woot sites that were offering it so I figured I'd stop by here too... TWO DAY SHIPPING GUYS!! How cool is that? It's cool!
I've had a 32GB model since they came out - I paid full retail for mine. This Woot is a great deal. I have a spare battery that has come in handy more than once. I love the full size SD card slot. I have several 32GB and one 64GB card that I load with movies/videos and photos. I own several cameras. I've taken cards out of my camera in the field, popped it into my Thrive, and shown my friends the pictures on the spot. Instant gratification! I also own a dSLR that uses CF cards, and with the full-size USB port, I've plugged in a USB CF reader and viewed photos that way. I am spoiled by all the slots and ports on this thing.
Does anyone who has this rooted it or flashed a custom ROM to it?
michaelmidwest wrote:I'm guessing he's asking this b/c a direct connection will be MUCH quicker than wifi. I wonder the same... and assume it's a yes.
The thrive has wireless N, it will stream 1080p movies from a shared folder on your computer over wifi with pretty much instant seeking. And throw it up on your plasma through hdmi just as clear as anything. The only place you will truly notice a difference in wireless versus wired is in latency on games and possibly bandwidth. I dont know of anyone with internet that would cap the wifi speeds on the thrive. There is no ethernet port or wired connection though. A full-size usb port may mean a usb to ethernet adapter may be used, that's dependent upon androids usb driver support though. Wireless routers are $10 nowadays, use the tablet wirelessly. XD
typing this from mine. I love it. full size ports removable battery. the size isn't a big deal because it doesn't feel delicate or flimsy. I also like the length in portrait mode. this makes reading PDF or books much better than some competitors. if you're on the fence do it. worst case, flip it. also, great community of users at thriveforums.org
Checked the Toshiba site FAQ and this tablet can be upgraded to Android 4.0 when released
I love mine!
chadfs wrote:Wish the price was just a bit better for a refurb. Groupon had them new with a 1 year warranty for $299 + 10 s/h a month or 2 ago.
I was lucky enough to snag one at this deal. I heart groupon. By the time I told my friends about it---sold out!
Staxeon wrote:Does anyone who has this rooted it or flashed a custom ROM to it?
yes, not many to chose yet though, toshiba is just now getting ready to release the kernel.
I was shopping all day yesterday for a tablet and hoping maybe Woot would have a decent deal. I really wish they'd put up the Iconia though, I don't really trust Toshiba's build quality so I'm reluctant to buy a refurb Toshiba.
milesy20 wrote:Ouch, Woot. Would much rather have this than the DOA Vizio tab I got last week. Hoping Vizio support gets their stuff together. Any chance I could get a refund on that one, ship it back to you and buy this one???
Woot is pretty good about these things. If it was DOA, you have a pretty good chance of getting a full refund from Woot. They may even pay for the return s/h. Email service@woot.com ASAP. As for this tablet, my guess is that it'll sell out so you may have to take a chance and order one before you get a response re: the Vizio.
scubalab wrote:Another VERY nice feature is the orientation lock... meaning by throwing a switch, you can disable the automatic orientation switching (via gravity) to turn pictures, read while lying down, etc. Didn't know it had this until a sales rep showed me. Haven't seen another tablet with this feature...
Actually, every Android has an orientation lock, but most of them have it in the settings rather than physical switch. The iPad has a switch that can be used as a mute or orientation lock.

I must be blind. Where does it states two day shipping at? Thanks.
I am really tempted by this. I wanted to buy a Xoom the last time it was offered here but was too late. Any idea on how it compares with a Xoom?
That's a pretty big assumption. A DSL modem typically connects to either your router or computer via ethernet, and on some can connect to a computer via USB. When connecting by USB, it needs software on the computer to make that happen. These are windows programs that are not going to run on a tablet. There's no ethernet port on this.
airtimecellular wrote:I must be blind. Where does it states two day shipping at? Thanks.
Hmmm. The little snail does say "Arrives by Christmas." EDIT - Danged tablet keyboards are slow to type on!
The ability to turn off the accelerometer is built into Android. If there is no hard button assigned to that function, you can go into the setup menu.
ivanivanovich wrote:Hmmm. The little snail does say "Arrives by Christmas."
My bad, just re-looked an there it is. Just was going to pull the trigger and gone through the process but the tax at the end kills the deal for me. Living in Washington state where Amazon is headquarter, woot charges me tax.
n41 merry Christmas to me! thanks woot!

Same for NY, but you can use coupon code "TAXSUCKS" to get $5 off, which basically means free s/h. For cheap items $40-$60, we taxpayers actually pay less total than Wooters who don't pay sales tax.
And it's a survival tool! Take the battery out, connect its two terminals with some very thin wire (like some of that steel wool you brought along to clean the cookpots), and it should get hot enough to set lightweight, fluffy tinder to glowing. Put that under kindling, add careful blowing, and you're well on your way to a life-saving campfire!
In for 2 Merry Xmas... $46 in tax Sux
Are you able to unplug battery but have the charger in while its on, as easy as a laptop? That's what I do with my laptop so I don't overcharge the battery.
Not hating on this tablet - I tried to get one on the Amazon Black Friday 200 dollar deal that literally instantly sold out - but it's kind of clunky to hold. Feels big and bulky. I owned a Viewsonic G-Tablet (bought off Woot 6 months or so back) that had a similar problem. Great hardware, awesome software after I immediately rooted/flashed to a good ROM, but just really hard to hold up and read an e-book for more than a few minutes. The Thrive has the basically the same guts at the Galaxy Tab, Iconia 500, Xoom, Transformer, etc. The Galaxy, in my opinion, far and away wins the ease-of-holding contest. Unfortunately, it never seems to go on sale. I bought a Transformer for 300 that I absolutely love. For 290 refurbished, I feel like patient tablet shoppers can wait and find a better deal in the next month or two.

The Acer Ionia a500 has it as well, in landscape mode, it's on the top left
kfhassan wrote:I am really tempted by this. I wanted to buy a Xoom the last time it was offered here but was too late. Any idea on how it compares with a Xoom?
Specs are nearly identical. Physically the Thrive is thicker and heavier. Xoom uses Gorilla glass. Thrive uses lower quality glass. Thrive has a full size SD card slot and USB 2 slot and can work as a full USB host. Xoom is microSD. Thrive supports SDXC. Xoom doesn't. SDXC lets you use cards/usb drives greater than 32GB. Xoom is practically a Google product. An ICS update will be pushed for it. Toshiba is non-committal on the possibility of an update. Personally, I'd go with the Thrive because I hate microSD. I have lots of pen drives and full size SD cards.
Just ordered one from my rooted Nook Color!!! Yup, I'm totally a nerd for that. Oh well, I'm ready for an upgrade and TOTALLY stoked! :D
