I don't think it should come like this out of the box especially if it came sealed from toshiba as "certified refurbished". What exactly did they do to certify it? ...and yes it has 3.1, not 3.2

Toshiba tech guy said the random rebooting is a common problem and is being corrected with the update to .0032. You have to install the update to fix this issue, but the problem is (see my other post) that it does not seem like anyone's devices are updating today!! Tech guy thinks there is something wrong with the update itself and nothing wrong with actual device. They may need to patch the .0032 update.

Got mine, plugged it in, no power light then for an hour later. Really fine job of refurb....NOT, which should at least catch DOA.

I bought two. One is working fine. The other has a dead camera. Toshiba is willing to repair it. I'm going to call Woot to see if I can get it replaced or refunded.

Mine arrived today WITHOUT AN AC ADAPTER.

So much for Toshiba's Quality Assurance. If they can't even include the correct THREE items in the box, how can I trust their inspection and re-certification process?

I am so tired of having to waste my time dealing with other people's incompetence.

UPDATE:Just got off the phone with Toshiba (Lack of) Support. They punted the ball back to Woot. I sent Woot an email earlier. But, I don't expect to receive a response until Tuesday, as they are closed on weekends, and Monday is a holiday at most companies.

Gonna need some eggnog.

BTW, does anybody know if it will charge using the USB cable as do Android phones?

UPDATE: According to the manual, it requires the AC adapter to charge the battery. It doesn't appear to charge via USB.

Exact same issue. The sad part is I was really looking forward to this, and if I send it back to Woot, I'm assuming I get a refund and not a new product. Without the marketplace or the "Service Station" app, there doesn't appear to be any way to update the device...

No sound from my tablet.

Tried troubleshooting it myself and still nothing.

Contacted Toshiba Tech support, no solution was found, and his advice was to contact woot.

Just sent off my email to woot for the RMA # to

Just to add my 2 cents to the conversation, mine will go to the "update" screen and begin the install with the gears turning in the android guy. It gets to about 30% in the bar and then shows an exclamation. About 5 minutes later it will reboot itself to main screen or I can force it immediately with either a battery pull or holding down the power button until it turns off.

I tried a few other misc things just for giggles, did anyone else notice the unit would not install the toshiba app updates in the service station until they turned on "install from unknown locations" that just seems strange to me...

Well like so many others, I was super excited to get my Thrive only to find an unusable product. For starters, I don't have all of the apps that I'm supposed to have. I researched the Thrive while waiting for it to arrive. Once I got home I tried to connect to android market to correct what I thought would be a minor problem... WRONG!!! There was no android market app and when I got to the market website, it did not list the Thrive among the supported devices. I then tried to see if I could update from Android 3.1 to 3.2 in a desperate attempt to really use the tablet. Apparently one of the missing apps on my device is the Toshiba Service update app. Five minutes into the call to Toshiba tech support, the CS rep thought I was pulling his leg as we walked through the script for the "you-shouldn't-own-a-computer-because-you're-a-snowman" customer. Once he realized that I was completely serious, he talked to a manager and verified that I indeed had a bum unit. John stated "even a re-certified Thrive was supposed to have many more apps than my unit possessed." I asked for recommendations for resolution and was advised to deal with Woot directly. Toshiba also stated that if they're unwilling to resolve the issue to call Toshiba back but only as a last resort. I can't say that I'm feeling very confident in making big purchases like this from Woot in the future and I'm really surprised at the lack of customer service on Toshiba's part. :-/

ok so here's what I found out... most of our units are coming with version HMJ37.01.5.0018 which is a non-standard firmware. A little googling will find how to update to HMJ37.01.5.0032 which I was just able to do successfully. I now have done a full factory reset, using the NEW rom and have all toshiba apps. Yay!

The second unit has a build number starting with HTK and it updated fine. There is a discussion on thriveforums.org but I hesitate to paste it here for fear someone will not follow directions and might brick their tablet worse than they are out-of-the-box.

Were these rooted units Toshiba is selling as refurbs?

It seems if your device build number(Settings, About Tablet, Build Number) starts with HMJ, you can download a loading tool (clockworkmod recovery), which requires an SD card and loading drivers onto a Windows PC, you can then download a 300MB ROM image to your SD card that includes the .0032 version (which is newer than the un-updatable stock .0018 version your HMJ device has), use the boot loading tool clockworkmod to pull up the reimage menu option, load the 300MB rom from SD Card, which refreshes a Toshiba stock .0032 version manually. (RISKY, but manually...) how's that for your $279 .

At least these steps will allow your tablet to respond to Toshiba updates - if you want it to - especially knowing anything after 0032 doesn't allow writing to an SD card (from what I've read). A few of us will probably be trying this long into the night o see if it works.

Details are on thriveforums website, but frankly I'm shocked if it's true Toshiba puts out refurb units with their very first build image version that is completely un-updatable with no discernable error message or explanation.

mine was definately rooted before I got mine although it didn't have clockworkmod on it. My bet is the refurb dept rooted it to wipe it with their internal version and never put it back to .0011 or .0032. Mine also was showing test keys.

IT WORKED! Perhaps Woot overlords could send a free tablet as I help fellow Wooters update theirs and avoid hundreds of RMAs? (shameless plug)

One of two tablets I purchased had build HMJ37.01.5.0018 on it; identified by Settings, About Tablet, Build Number (at the bottom) and would not load Toshiba's OTA software updates.

I had to follow all of these steps:
download clockworkmod recovery (details here, download here ), connect the tablet to a Windows PC and load the tablet drivers that needed to be unzipped from the zip file on that webpage as Windows prompted me for Thrive drivers. They're all in that Zip file.

Once the drivers were loaded and I ran the batch file from the PC, it needed an SD card with Toshiba's 300+MB ROM file of the .0032 version on it, downloaded from thriveforums (details here, HUGE download here ). And remember to visit their sponsors - they have to pay for bandwidth and storage of a 300mb file!

Unzipping the .0032 rom, put the update.zip file in the root of the SD card, insert the SD card, run the backup program (just in case), by navigating the clockworkmod recovery app with the vol up/down buttons, backup the .0018 to your SD card, then run the update from SD card, and once complete, select the restart option.

Viola! Both tablets are updating using Toshiba's OTA updates and no more exclaimation point update errors!

I'm sure Woot/Toshiba can find my address to send my booty! ;)

Awesome, thanks!! I unfortunately have been trying all morning to flash clockwork with no luck. I FINALLY figured out that ADB was not installing correctly. I had to search for device manager, then right click on my tablet, click "update drivers," then locate the ADB update file and follow prompts. THEN, the clockwork install tool worked, yaaay! My tablet just now finished installing .0032 and is now rebooting.

BTW, I do indeed have that dreaded HMJ.....0018 build!!! I was SO happy to find your post this morning because late last night, my tablet went into an endless sunrise loop. Had to do factory reset to fix. After seeing your post this morning, I decided I would do the update using your method rather than waiting for Toshiba to fix the issue (if ever!). Last thing I want is to spend hours of time setting up my device only to have to factory reset again! HOPING this update not only fixed the automatic reboot issue, but also fixed the sunrise looping issue as well. We will see and I will keep you guys updated. :-)

As another user put it, this will be all worth it if this device works as intended. It is A LOT of work to fix something that Toshiba's refurb department should have, but oh well. :-)

I am still excited to get the thrive at the woot price, even if 'some assembly is required' I would be disappointed to have to send the unit back.

Dennis,

Thank you for watching out for us.

From watching this forum, and others, it looks like Toshiba's known about this issue for a few months.

It's just upsetting that refurbished devices were released with this problem. Personally, I don't think I should have to go through the steps as described unless Toshiba's not going to stand behind their product. At which point, they'll be slammed by public opinion which now travels faster than the speed of light.

Right now, my tab is operational, albeit with the prior factory image and I will continue to monitor the situation. If I have to do the update manually, I will, but I want to make sure that Toshiba's support steps up to the plate.

Winter Solstice Greetings,
Colby
