One of two tablets I purchased had build HMJ37.01.5.0018 on it; identified by Settings, About Tablet, Build Number (at the bottom) and would not load Toshiba's OTA software updates.

I had to follow all of these steps:
download clockworkmod recovery (details here, download here ), connect the tablet to a Windows PC and load the tablet drivers that needed to be unzipped from the zip file on that webpage as Windows prompted me for Thrive drivers. They're all in that Zip file.

Once the drivers were loaded and I ran the batch file from the PC, it needed an SD card with Toshiba's 300+MB ROM file of the .0032 version on it, downloaded from thriveforums (details here, HUGE download here ). And remember to visit their sponsors - they have to pay for bandwidth and storage of a 300mb file!

Unzipping the .0032 rom, put the update.zip file in the root of the SD card, insert the SD card, run the backup program (just in case), by navigating the clockworkmod recovery app with the vol up/down buttons, backup the .0018 to your SD card, then run the update from SD card, and once complete, select the restart option.

Viola! Both tablets are updating using Toshiba's OTA updates and no more exclaimation point update errors!

I'm sure Woot/Toshiba can find my address to send my booty! ;)

glad you were able to get yours working like I was... I didn't post the exact directions because I didn't think woot or toshiba wanted root instructions on this blog... but the fact of the matter is this device would not update without root. With that being said I had further problems later on AFTER I rooted with the market not working so I booted into clockworkmod and wiped the system partition, then flashed the stock, unrooted .0032 rom to it. That removed root and put it to .0032 factory (the image we should have had when we received). I then rooted again, reinstalled clockworkmod and put the "full stock rooted .0032" on top of it. Everything is working perfect now or so it seems. I have not had it reboot on me once or get stuck in the power suspend mode as it was doing when I got it.

Mine arrived late yesterday and spent the eventing setting things up.

I'm very pleased except for the inability to update to .0032 and it's SD card issue seems very odd.

I will spend some time next week trying get .0032 update. installed but I will probably wait until the SD issue is resolved.

When I logged into my gmail account, not all may apps loaded automatically so I'm not sure what that is about.

There is also an incompatibility issue with the Scottrade Android trading app.

Amazon prime instant video worked fabulously when I tried it this morning.

Overall I am a very happy camper and want to thank the guys here that posted their problems and resolutions.

Merry Christmas

You know what's even more sad ? The fact that the same day you ran this, staples had it BRAND NEW for $349 on sale. If I knew I was going to have all these problems I would not have bought it refurbed for $289. I would have spent the extra $60 to not put up with this bs. This definately will make me think twice about paying decent cash for refurb technology from woot. I've been instructing all my family to buy your refurb'd roku's as well over the last few months but now I just hope they don't have problems like this.

Never received e-mail confirmation on 1-year, so just checked using serial # on Toshiba website... Says March 12, 2012. :-( Ah well, guess CR lied or was mistaken. Might be getting the Square Trade just in case.

Mine arrived yesterday, and except for the update issue that so many people are having, mine is working well, and I am pleased with it so far. No lock outs or hard resets. I should count myself lucky to have received a decent unit.

I'm wondering whether to leave it alone as it is, or root it. I want to tether it to my rooted and custom rom'ed Samsung Epic Galaxy S, but at this point, I'm feeling skittish.

I have a rooted Captivate Galaxy S and I just set it up as a Mobile AP (click option on menu: settings --> wireless and network --> Mobile AP --> Put check in box for Mobile AP, there ya go, instant hot spot!). No tethering required and my new tablet is on the internet, wherever I am. :-)

I do not plan to root my tablet until after the warranty expires, for fear of voiding the warranty. As of right now, there is no need for it.

This is an update on my situation with the tablet that came with some sort of development build (dev tools, no market, no updater, inability to associate a gmail account, etc.). I contacted Toshiba and registered my tablet, then had them transfer me over to support. They ran me through the process of attempting to reset the device (by holding the power/volume+ rocker and using the menu that pops up), which I had already tried twice. That didn't do it, obviously. The rep then asked where I purchased the device from, and I told him Woot. The next thing he told me was that I've apparently been given a bad device and set me up with an RMA to return the device for repair. He said that it would take 7-10 days, gave me a reference number to check on it and I got the e-mail confirmation with all the info almost immediately.

I had sent an e-mail to the rma@woot.com address last night, and got a response from Woot a few minutes after. They're offering the same 7-10 time frame for a replacement device. I'm kind of on the fence - take the chance Woot sends me a working device, or have my current device repaired by Toshiba? I'm assuming Toshiba would make sure the tablet works correctly, whereas the refurbs that Woot is selling may have been refurbished by some 3rd party...

Well, Woot it is - Toshiba wants $24.95 to have it shipped in a special FedEx box and Woot gave me a free label that I'm going to attach to the box it originally came in.

Thanks for the info. Unfortuantely, my Galaxy S Epic does not have that option.
I decided to take the plunge and root and manually update. It seems to be working fine for now.

For everyone, please check each and every function of the tablet, including audio jack, usb ports and hdmi port. My mic seems rather low in sensitivity. Other than that everything seems to be fine.

I'm back!
A few notes: by temparilly 'rooting' and putting on a FACTORY .0032 ROM image, the "root" access actually gets overwritten and it becomes a 100% factory imaged tablet. And most importantly, as a result of this, also becomes updatable via future OTA (over-the-air) Toshiba updates.

Also, remember: if you update *beyond* .0032 version, the sd card becomes read-only, apparently due to Toshiba & Android's new restrictions in modern ("honeycomb") versions. I guess it keeps people from sharing apps and pirating copy-protected videos/music, etc.

So.....update beyond .0032 if you want new Andriod bug-fixes, but you'll also being forcing restrictions on what you can do with your sd cards.

A second update: after posting the walkthru earlier, both tablets I received (that arrived having different builds loaded) now work and have identical builds. The tablets both downloaded every new Toshiba OTA updates flawlessly (I don't intend to do any advanced with SD cards, so I prefer to have a more bug-free experience than avoid copy-protections).

The result? Skype is now loaded on both tablets, they call each other flawlessly, and using the dual video cameras, my kids will be able to video-chat with the grand'rents in AZ for Christmas!

Woot!

Estimated total time investment time to make Thrive updatable: 1 hour (but I'm somewhat tech-savvy). Think of it as 'assembly required'. (Or more accurately: SD card, MSWindows PC and downloading required') if you get shipped a unit with old software build and want it to keep updated.

Round 2 with Toshiba tech support went as follows:

1. turn off tablet
2. hold down volume up button
3. turn on tablet
4. choose the middle icon (a box being opened) using the volume buttons as arrow keys and the power button as enter.
5. at the recovery menu choose the option labeled factory reset again using the volume and power buttons.
6. confirm this action
result: I lost the calibration apps.
I have been elevated to level 2 support and am expecting a phone call from them tomorrow.

I will post more after that session.

Nice! I've rooted several phones over the years and loaded custom ROMs but I didn't suspect I would have to do anything in recovery to get this working with updates out of the box. Ever since my wife claimed my Xoom as her own I've been stuck using an iPad from work and I've missed having an Android tablet. Thanks again for posting this fix.

Could someone please post instructions on how to set this back to a factory-fresh setup?

And specifically if you can do it in layman's terms would be helpful. I can follow instructions very well, but it helps if I could actually understand them ;^)

I've read through Theologian's instructions several times, and it seems like there may be some things omitted, or assumed to be understood, I don't :^(

I have a weird build: > tostab03-eng 3.1 HMJ37 eng.ron.20110622.191714 test-keys

I don't have marketplace, and whatever else a factory fresh unit is supposed to come with. The tablet seems to work fine otherwise, and I really rather not have to send it back.

Thanks much!!

Can't get beyond the GPS Lock for the batch file to complete. May be a dumb question but how do I know if I have a lock. Didn't see the "circle"the readme file speaks of and then I downloaded GPS Status toolkit. I see several satellites with strong signals...but how does it "lock" and what will I see to know its locked.

I was by a window and after I opened google map and saw that the map it loaded was of where I was, I proceeded with the next step.

After FedEx decided to take mine on a sightseeing trip through the neighborhood on their truck Thursday, I got it yesterday morning. The update to 0032 went fine, with the only noticeable difference being the keystroke sound volume dropped to barely audible. I popped in my Google account info and all the apps I bought for my Wooted Samsung Wi-Fi 5.0 installed themselves without an issue. Plex transcoded 1080p and 720p movies streaming from my PC flawlessly and beautifully. Everything seemed golden.

Then...I started noticing I was having trouble "clicking" certain buttons and boxes, such as the search box in the Market. Eventually I realized a strip about 3/8" high near the top and across the entire width of the screen in landscape mode was completely unresponsive. I installed a free kiddie drawing program and tried to paint the entire screen, and sure enough, I couldn't fill in that entire section.

Toshiba support had me do a factory reset, which of course did nothing, and I wasn't keen on the idea of sending it in so they could refurbish my once-refurbed unit. So back to Woot it goes. If I see a reasonable deal on a new one, I'll be all over it. Until I got obsessed with the fact that a good chunk of important screen real estate was dead, I was really enjoying it.

WARNING (AT LEAST FOR ME):

Using the instruction Theologian and someone else wrote about properly installing ADP driver on windows, I was able to install stock HMJ37.01.5.0032. Everything seems to be working very well.

BUT, even on this kernal version and Android version of 3.1, I cannot write to SD card!! IMO, one of the great benefits of Thrive is the "pc" like environment with full size ports, full size usb support and full size sd card support. To cripple one of these benefits is a significant downgrade. Just so we are clear, before I did this manual upgrade, SD card was reading and writing just fine. So the caution is if you want to have the full sd card access, then be sure to back up your system before manually upgrading. Do NOT skip that crucial step.

You may need to install ADP android drivers manually as I had to. I was in the same spot as you for hours, couldn't figure out what I was doing wrong. Finally figured out I had to go into device manager (to find type "device manager" into search on start menu). Once you are in Device Manager, find your phone, right click on it, then click "update drivers." You will then need to find the driver file that Theologian spoke of. The driver you need is called "USB_ADB_Drivers_Eng_Multi_x86_x64" What I did was copy it onto my desktop before clicking "update driver" just to make it easier to find.

Once I did that, I ran through the GPS lock step again and the batch file was then able to continue from there. After that, I followed all of Theologians steps and I now have a PERFECT device!!!! yaaay! No more random restarts, no more locking up on splash screen, no more problems. :-)

About the little circle: It is a circle with fours cross hairs (like a scope). If it is an open circle, then it has no gps signal at all, if it has a solid, blinking circle inside it, then it is trying to lock in a gps signal. You want to wait until the blinking circle stops blinking and stays solid. Then you are ready to go. If you can't find the circle in Google Maps, try "GPS Test" app, it has a crosshair circle in it that is large and very obvious. That is what I used.

It seems to me that Toshiba has no actual "certification" process. And, their "reconditioning" consists of putting used tablets in new boxes.

If these were truly certified and reconditioned in the proper sense of the terms, they would have not only been tested, but they would have been reflashed with the latest build before such testing.

As I stated earlier, they couldn't even perform the simple act of putting the correct 3 items in the box.

To add insult to injury, rub salt in the wound, and kick a man when he's down, they are, for most of us who contact their support line, refusing to offer any support.

That's just messed up in a lot of ways.

Chessasaur,
We all had the "!" sign. At least a good majority of us because these shipped with different software images loaded.

Read my previous post on how to manually get 0032 loaded so you can get your tablet to a version that updates (or wait for a potential fix from Toshiba).

Actually, I'll have to modify my instructions to be more clear on having to go into device manager and load windows driver for the tablet onto your PC so you can begin loading software.

Also, the GPS step in the instructions may/seem complicated, but all the author wants is to verify GPS still works, just take it outside for a sec and open Google maps and close it.

I took the next step in updating OTA to HMJ37.31.5.0011. After installing this, the sd card read write is back working. Also, I am able to watch avi movies off of usb flash drive. This wiped out clockworkmod, though.

Not wanting to leave well enough alone, I tried to regain temporary root via fastboot_restore, which worked the first time after the whole GPS lock procedure and ADB driver update. Strangely, I am no longer able to regain clockworkmod. I have the mind to regain root, and then install DaleNet HTK55D.31.5.0002 OOM Rooted ROM.

How do I root this thing now?

I have spent the better part of 2 1/2 days trying to get this tablet to work properly or update with no luck, countless resets, following all instructions on multiple sites as to how to get it to work as intended, I admit I am giving up & emailed w00t for an rma#....this was intended as a gift & now has been a huge disappointment, I will search for another alternative to getting one of these tablets...good luck to those who have working tablets.

I got one as a gift for my wife, didn't test it before Christmas but read all the problems people had after I wrapped it. I was a little concerned to say the least. But so far everything is OK, no death sleep... All the functions seem to work but I haven't tried to update it yet. We'll give it a little while before that.
Build number HMJ37.01.5.0018
Pretty slick tablet actually, I'm not an Android person but it's nice.
Wish my iPad had some of the ports and whatnot. HDMI out would be awesome.

Unboxed mine this morning, what a wonderful experience for a Christmas morning, thank you Woot and Toshiba.

No update, registration does not work, gps does not work, screen rotation does not work (consistently). What a piece of junk.

Now I read that to get this thing working you have to go through a very technical process. Wonderful, just how I want to spend my holiday.

I'm never buying anything off Woot again, let alone a refurb. Totally agree that Toshiba's certification process must include putting the returned units into boxes for re-sale. Totally p/o'd

Good thing for me I enjoy tinkering around with rooting and modding and such. Had I followed the exact instructions on http://www.thriveforums.org/forum/toshiba-thrive-development/4808-thrive-rooting-tutorial-us-noobs.html

I would have save myself a day or so of work, downgrading the rom, resetting, etc..

Now it is updated, running honeycomb 3.2.1, build version HTK55D.31.5.0002, rooted and memory optimized. USB port and SD card works on both read and write. Runs AVI natively too. To top it all off, I bought a .99 cent app called Flash Video Browser, and can now watch HULU on my tablet. I'm really enjoying it.

Remember that if you do not have market place or google maps installed, then you can always download the apk file and install it manually via SD card. It is very important that you go into setup and allow installation of unknown apps, otherwise manual installation will not work. Once you have google maps, you just need to follow the instructions in the above link.

Good luck you guys. It was a lot of work, but I am loving my hacked, rooted, and customized Thrive now.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!
