No! No, no, not 6!
7's the key number here. Think about it. 7-Elevens. 7 dwarves. 7, man, that's the number. 7 chipmunks twirlin' on a branch, eatin' lots of sunflowers on my uncle's ranch. You know that old children's tale from the sea. It's like you're dreamin' about Gorgonzola cheese when it's clearly Brie time, baby. Step into my office.

I have been thoroughly shamed for my inability to count to 5.1. I sincerely apologize to everyone ever.

More often than not, nope. Now maybe you'll find some sets that have proprietary connector or some sort of processor chip in them to help with the timing.

Those speakers won't be on woot. THESE speakers use either normal speaker wire or RCA plugs. Heck, you could use straitened coat hangers. (google it)

Now, don't get started on type of wire! Lots of snake oil salesmen out there selling you Zero Oxygen shielded braided 24K gold cryo-treated wire with porcelain floor stands to lower attenuation, or wooden knobs that increase the richness of sound or power supplied that "smooth" your power flow...

So we got the speaker thing figured out...can we move on?

Yea good stuff here, but the Sub seems a little under powered.

I wouldn't mind getting this just to have some matched speakers.

Excellent. I was looking for a set of decent speakers to go with the Pioneer VSX 1021-K receiver they had on deals.woot (Newegg, $300 after $250 off) a few weeks back.
Result!

OK, this is for all the smarties who know about the .1 nonsense. If 5.1 is 5 speakers and a sub, and 7.2 is 7 speakers and 2 subs, how would you denote having 10 subs?

In the typical 5.1 HTIB setup, however, the LFE channel is not usually a dedicated subwoofer channel like you find on a standard 5.1+ channel audio receiver. In this typical setup, the bass is redirected from the main channels and supplemented instead through the LFE channel (differentiating it from the operation of a standard subwoofer channel).

Um, that isn't a differentiation between HTiBs and separates. It is a setting that should be available in all, although may not be, where you can use a crossover in your receiver to send the bass portion of the 5 main channels to the sub. This is in addition to the LFE/.1 channel.

You make it sound like the receiver creates the .1 channel, but that is hard-encoded onto DVDs and BDs. It is a real channel, just with a limited frequency range.

for people who know stuff about speakers:

how good are these speakers in comparison to the Pioneer SP-BS41 Speakers that were on here a month or so ago? And is this sub decent or how does it compare to a Polk Audio PS111 or PSW505? Im looking to finish off my surround system and I also need a subwoofer, just trying to decide if I should buy separately or buy this set as I already have a receiver.

Depending on the number of surrounds... it would be xx.ouch

Like Alma Gates' Bronco...

Random Crap x 14
Regular woots x 21
Shirt woots x 22
Kids woots x 3
Wine woots x 1,
Home woots x 0, moofi woots x 0, deals woots x Who knows

It's what I play at my house. Many BDs claim to have 7.1 surround sound in form of Dolby TrueHD or DTS HD Master Audio. But often times the last 2 channels are not truly separate channels, they were simply created in the studio in a similar manner to how Dolby Pro Logic would create them with your receiver, anyway.

The Polks are likely to be far superior subs. It's really hard to compare without a true test (frequency charts), and I haven't looked for those. But if you are considering spending $300-500 on a sub, you should look beyond the big name brands. Try Hsu Research and SVS subs instead. They will amaze you.

Edit: Wow, I didn't realize SVS has now priced themselves out of the <$500 range. But Hsu Research is still selling an amazing sub for under $300 that will give ridiculously great bass.

Not the best ever, but for the price its 5x better than what I have. If I actually had the spare cash I'd get a set.

Hey, just thought I'd let you know that 5.1 is 5 speakers and a subwoofer. Since nobody else seemed to post that.

So would it just be better to get this set now and wait on getting an hsu sub until later?

To be technically accurate, there is no such thing as 5.2/7.2 because the LFE/subwoofer output only has 1 channel. If you use 10 subwoofers connected to the LFE/sub output, the proper way to describe your setup is to say "I have a 7.1 setup using 7 main/surround speakers and 10 subs."
There are systems using 2 center speakers but those systems are not called 8.1 systems just because an extra main/surround speaker is being used.
As far as buying a separate subwoofer goes: the subs that come in these packages aren't true subwoofers, they are more of a bass module. These smaller main speakers don't play well in the bass region so a bass module is needed for that. So even if you have a system like this, you still need a proper true sub such as one from HSU or SVS.

How would these compare to the Onkyo SKS-HT540 7.1 Channel Home Theater Speaker System that was on another site (till the 26th)?
My receiver can do either (Yamaha RX-A800)5.1 or 7.1.

Thanks

I have had mine for two years and they are great speakers.
Haven't had any problems with them and I use them frequently.

So then should I wait on this, and just buy the hsu sub now, I don't have enough money right now for both this set and the hsu sub. I currently only have the Pioneer 821 Receiver and two Pioneer BS41 Bookshelf speakers

They are using speaker math which is something like binary:

10 front speakers
10 rear speaker
01 center speaker
01 subwoofer
---
111 = 6 in regular numbers

Personally I would rather have 2 main speakers and a great true sub over a surround sound system that doesn't use a true sub.
But this decision should be made with other factors in mind. If you live in a house where neighbors wouldn't be bothered with the true subwoofer, then get the sub. If you live in an apartment where neighbors could be bothered with the shaking walls, then skip the sub and get the surround sound package.

Im gonna get both actually. Im trading in books on amazon so I can have enough for the sub too haha. Plus there are no neighbors on my side of the house, just an abandoned creepy house, I guess that is what cheap rent in a college town gets you.
