Hard drive install is like installing into a micro PC case. Its tight... Watch for sharp edges. Youll be ok. Have some confidence. Its not bad.

Just FYI at that D1 704 x 480 resolution it will only record at 56FPS. So around 7 FPS per camera which is pretty low. The like DSLR rapid stills speed ;-)

The Mooʇ¡ bundle (sku PKD-DK1666-1TB) includes lower res CM-C11306BK cameras while the Woot! bundle (sku PKD-DK80208) includes the better CM-C21606BK cameras. FYI, Costco's $400 bundle has 8 600 TVL cameras item #623450 .

Isn't that assuming you would be recording all the cameras at once. And you have all 8 hooked up. Or is it always 7fps ? Personally I would use these on motion recording.

Im just assuming the cameras, cabling and power supplies are worth the price. Then if I had to I could build my own DVR. If decent cameras could be had cheaper I would like to know where

Sorry for the silly question, but does this record audio as well, or only video? And if it does, is it on all 8 cameras, or only selected ones?

Thanks in advance!

My own personal experience with home security cameras placed 7 feet (2 meters) off the ground, is that you will be able to identify faces in total darkness from about 10 feet (3 meters?) away. See what they are doing from 20 feet away, and tell that people are actually there from around 25 to 30 feet away. Additional lighting in strategic locations (placed to avoid glare in the camera lens) can provide for better performance.

Thanks! It seems that putting in a Hard Drive is easy physically, and I think the basic Hard Drive configuration information is here:

I'll be mounting the cams outdoors, running the wires in the attic and down through the wall to the DVR box. Any recommendations how to minimize cable & outlet box mess? Putting 8 video connections on wall plates sounds like a messy proposition.

Based on the pics of the cables, you will have to get different cams to do audio. The ones included only do video. Number of audio channels that the box supports will vary from model to model.

What iPhone app works for this? I got my buddy working with his Android, but have yet to find a suitable iPhone app.

(Internet Explorer works fine for remote view as well)

If I can get this working with the iPhone, I'll pull the trigger on one for myself.

I have a QSEE DVR 4 camera system that I am pleased with. After watching the video review of this Zmodo, I think the systems are pretty much the same. The cameras, mouse and remote are all identical to mine.

Installing a hard drive is VERY easy. And the DVR will format it for you.

As far as the quality for reading license plates, that's probably not going to happen with this system. At least I know I couldn't on mine. Video quality is good during the day - at night, if you don't have an external light source you're not going to be able to see very well. Unless the camera is covering a very small area.

I've been using my DVR system for over a year now with very few problems. Someone stated about the cameras sagging due to poor mounting brackets. Mine haven't sagged at all. And one camera is at the very top of my 2 story house. So it gets a lot of wind.

Even though I already have a 4 camera system, I don't think I can pass this by. It's too good of a deal.... ;-)

I'm too young to be telling that joke.

I bought this about two months ago. Back then it did not come with a hard drive and it was $249.99. $70 more for the 1T hard drive is not a bad deal. I did buy a 2T drive for $59 from new egg which I'm going to put in.

I'm not sure if the cams are the same but the dvr certainly is.

Not a bad deal either way. I also bought a K-guard 8 CCD camera system. Quality is about the same, although the kguard unit looks slicker.

Got the 4 camera version when it was on Woot. Night vision is OK, limited to 30 feet. In night vision mode motion detection is a bit spotty, detects motion due to the low light condition. Got a bad cable with mine (in Nov) and have been trying to get in touch with support to get a replacement, so far they haven't responded.

Overall it wasn't a bad deal.

When Woot! sold these CM-C21606BK cameras on Nov 4, 2011, they were spec'd at 420 TVL and now they're listed at 480 TVL!? What's the real TVL resolution of these cams? (that Zmodo DVR got panned in the forum too for only being able to record at CIF 352x240).

Exactly what I said about the one I bought last time! I was sooooo mad! To which I got the reply it said it on WOOT, no, it said it was a DVR, and DVR's record! That was just a bunch of cameras that served no purpose.

OK but is this setup good enough to monitor groups of zombies milling around the bunker? I dont want any surprises when I go out foraging for canned goods and gasoline. Will the night vision work on the cold blooded undead? Just askin.

Really thinking of getting one for our place at the beach. Don't need 8 cameras but it would be nice to see how things are going during storms, and to torture myself by wishing I was there.....

Can you reset the DVR remotely?

hope your beachfront property is in a warm climate? this is useless in the cold. also if you are in a warm climate you do not have to hook all 8 up and have extra camers. it is a good price, but I have this unit and paid 40 more. but picture quality past 10 feet is poor at beast

i have this system and at first below 20 would kill them and the manufachure told me to unplug the camersa power under that ????? after another week went by it started doing it under freezing. I feeel this is a poor choice. I got one on here called Tetragon and it is 10 X better and never have had a problemas well as it comes with it's own hard drive and monitor. google it you will find them cheap

I bought the four cam unit several weeks ago. It has exceeded expectations, but don't expect too much from the night vision. It only illuminates the center of your image and the sides are still dark.

That being said, its still a good system.

The cameras do not have audio. There is one audio input on the DVR case. It's an RCA jack, so I'm assume its a line level input. There's also a single RCA audio out. If you want audio, you'll need to add a microphone with a line level output

vyndictive

quality posts: 0 Private Messages vyndictive

I bought the 4 camera system a few months ago also. Added a 1 TB hard drive for under 50 bucks from Tiger Direct.

Install was a breeze.

I had an old CRT laying around, so I use that as my dedicated monitor.

Night vision for outdoor use is a bad. I would say that have a maximum effective range of 10 feet. I have them pointed right at doors, so to use the door at night, you're in 10 feet, so it works.

Resolution isn't great either. I had to really try to make out a license plate at 25 ft.

Motion detection is funny. I've messed with all the sensitivity settings and it just records everything anyway.

Overall though, I'm pleased. I have a home surveillance system for under $200.

Rossi wrote:So, here's something I've been considering for a while. Is there any ability to use a system like this one (or this one specifically) as an instant replay machine for sports broadcasting? If we tie the normal Sony/Canon broadcast cameras we use into the input ports, would we have the ability to: 1) focus in on only one of the cameras without on-screen graphics from the DVR itself; 2) easily time-shift backward to replay a certain event from 30/60 seconds earlier; and 3) switch to another camera's angle/history seamlessly? What is the video quality in such a situation (at least 30fps at 640z480 or better)?

Most computers and software are unable to do this with more than one video camera's view -- so a unit like this, if it would work as I'm suggesting, would be invaluable for us in our broadcasting of small college football and basketball games -- and allow for basketball video replay verification by officials if we knew that we had a seamless way to assist in the replay process.

Thanks for any info anyone can provide.

- Frank

I don't think the quality would be good enough for broadcasting. Also, the interfaces are usually a little clunky and wouldn't navigate fast enough for use on air. Then again, I have never tried it. I could not see advising a client to use one of these though.
