Hello,
I am a Zmodo representative and I would like to address the concern quoted above.

These kits do not include hard drives but recording is still an option via a PC once the DVR is properly networked for remote viewing.

What do you recommend for digital cameras and DVR that would be a good value, although more than what is being sold here?

Hello,
I am a Zmodo representative. This DVR is capable of recording 1 channel of audio however the supplied cameras are not audio cameras. To record audio you would have to purchase audio cameras and an audio cable or provide your own microphone and cables.

Hello,
I am a Zmodo representative and would like to address the confusion stated on the quoted post. This is the highest resolution camera that we have put on WOOT! so far to date.

I would like to share a link with you that shows the specs for the image sensor in this camera and show that it does state that in NTSC the image sensor produces 720 (H) x 487 (V) effective pixels.

http://mt9v136.en.b2b168.com/shop/supply/14552474.html

The image sensor in these cameras are capable of producing 480 horizontal TV Lines which is a rating commonly referred to in surveillance equipment.

rvanderwerf wrote:Some advise for installing. Toss out the power adapters and cables. Get on ebay or Amazon, buy a box of 1000ft cat 5e for about 50 bucks. Then get balun adapters (about a Buck each) and a 10 unit power box for about 35 bucks. You run 2 of the wires of each run to the power box, rest to the other ends with baluns to the dvr. Now you can go any distance you want without the fuss or mess of crappy cables.

This is really unclear. Never done it before so does each camera get 2x cat5 and how is power supplied and, and, and...
Some Baluns are $2.99, some are $40. Which to use???

The video can ride on a twisted pair using the baluns (matching transformers). they just are a transformer that matches the 75ohm coax to 100 ohm twisted pair (cat V). The quality from the Hong Kong ones are anyone's guess. As long as they are CCTV (75 - 100 ohm) they should work.

Then you can supply camera power over another available pair. You will need another power supply with screw terminals for this. Cat V is 4 pair so there is still 2 pair left over.

The benefits are cat V is a smaller cable, easier to run, cheaper and possibly more durable.

Since these come with cables already, I am not sure if its worth it.

BTW his prices were off as you found out.

You certainly can add a hard drive to this system. The hard drive must be a SATA hard drive and can not be larger than 2TB.

Recording audio is more problematic legally than recording video, so, most surveillance systems don't include audio. Many states have a 'two party rule' where anyone being recorded needs to be notified and agree to it.

The angle of view for these cameras is 54 degrees since they use a 6 mm lens size.

I have a different sort of question. With these cameras, does anyone know how close I can put them the subject?

I plan on using these cameras to keep an eye on equipment in operation and want to be able to read indicator lamps and LED displays remotely.

Please don't just make things up and present them as fact. Only 12 states require 2+ party notification. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Telephone_recording_laws#United_States

I bought a 4 channel version, HD is easy enough for a two year old to install, the cameras start out good. After about 4 months the cameras aren't worth a plug nickel. Of the 4 I have one that flutters all the time, 2 have lost night vision even though they still light up and one that is still OK. Picture quality is fair to 15'after that it starts dropping. If you want good quality pictures or to be able to read license plates you would need to buy better cameras and may have to buy them anyhow with time.

Regardless of the state, it is almost always illegal to record a conversation to which you are not a party, do not have consent to tape, and could not naturally overhear.
This has been upheld in Federal court as well as Supreme court cases time and time again.
I can cite case law if necessary, but just be aware ... that is the general rule of thumb followed by any legal advisor.

It's called "warrantless surveillance".

Yes, even on your own property.
A persons right to privacy transcends property lines.
So, unless you have a "wiretap" or "eavesdropping" warrant issued by a Judge, your breaking the law.

While I have no reason to question your comments, I would like to add that at these low prices, I'd take a chance on the cameras. If they fail, I'd look into some more better ones.

Camera quality is an issue even with higher end systems sold at places like Sam's and Costco.

I couldn't be more disappointed with this system. I bought the 4 channel one off woot about 4 weeks back. It's the same as this 8 channel other than it only has 4 cameras. The picture is woefully inadequate for any kind of purpose other than to view and say yes, there's a person stealing whatever isn’t tied down but there isn't a chance in hell of identifying the thief. Like a few others have said, other than a visual deterrence it's a waste of your money. I even spent $230 on a quality ir camera and it only made a minor improvement in the picture with this DVR. Very, very cheap junk. To the person wondering about a hard drive install...just open the box, hook it up and secure it, power on and with a few clicks of the mouse it's formated and ready to go.

There are a number of apps that will work.

I find "IP Cam Viewer Lite" by Robert Chou to be the best one for my needs. It's a free app that can be upgraded to a paid version to remove the advertisements.

You can enroll each camera connected to the DVR into the app and view them in a matrix view or set it to cycle through the feeds.

You will need a static ip address, or a dynamic DNS host account, to remote view from an Android device. Dyndns.com provides one free host name for doing a free trial of their pro account. You will also need to setup port forwarding in your router to get it to work.
