My research says that it can display other languages, but cannot size up Arabic fonts the way it can size up standard Latin fonts. Several reviews of some Kindle books in Arabic comment on this. I assume that's part of the reason why there aren't many Kindle texts available in Arabic. I have not tried displaying any kind of Arabic text other than PDF's which are just handled as images.

I got a pink sliding cover for about $10 on Amazon. The brand is Octo. I don't need a folio style cover -- I mostly just wanted something to keep it safe from the cat, who keeps trying to lie down on it. I also have Gelaskins on order for it; all my tech gear is coordinated with matching Gelaskins. They're having a sale right now; I strongly recommend them. they don't protect against falls, but do prevent scratches and make stuff look more unique and um, pretty. :-)

Anyone know of a good solid hard sleeve for this, trying to make it mobile without having the screen crack, everything seems to be out of stock. I'm thinking an iPAD case should work. Or the stock case with some double sided tape...

Thanks. I would say it depends on the document - Arabic text is often rendered as images *because* people don't trust other devices to have support for fonts. But in the pdf wrapper you can also do a document with fonts which will probably have trouble. I hope it gets the medial/final forms right even if it can't change the size!

I ordered one - so this kind of sucks. It means this Kindle is really a Kindle 2 pretending to be a Kindle 3 - not the same capabilities it seems!

I have the Octo case from Amazon -- set me back 10 bucks. It's fairly hard and seems like it will prevent screen damage. Mine's like this: http://www.amazon.com/OCTOVO-Leather-Kindle-Display-Generation/dp/B002KPYY9Q/ref=sr_1_2?s=fiona-hardware&ie=UTF8&qid=1325493530&sr=1-2 . It appears that it does come in black and brown, but is out of stock at Amazon. I don't suppose you'd be chill with oh, windex blue or neon yellow, would you?

I've been considering the windex blue vs. the stock case modified with some Velcro...choices. I worry about the 5 way button with the octovo.

I read on another woot site that shipping is delayed due to end-of-year stuff (probably inventory taking, etc.), and that they should resume shipping on 1-3-2012. I imagine they have a lot of stuff backed up in the warehouse to ship. Our Kindles should ship in a day or two. Personally, I'm waiting till the weekend to start the serious whining and complaining.

Thanks very much for your useful information yes I believe they must meet some problem, what I can do is just check my account everyday to see if I can be lucky enough to get my kindle shipped within this week....

Yes. And since this appears to be your first woot, just know that fast shipping is not something woot spends a lot of time worrying about, it seems. You pay $5 for shipping whether it is a 65" rear projection TV, or a tiny screaming monkey. Either way, it'll probably be shipped the slowest (cheapest) method. Just relax, it'll get there eventually.

It's shipped! In and out of Dallas but that probably means it's on it's way to Southhaven, MS. My Fire stayed there 5 days so I don't have a lot of hope...BUT...says "Shipping date: Jan. 9". We'll see. Now I know why Amazon didn't sell these, no PRIME shipping worries.

So for the same price the people that ordered just prior to Christmas got it overnight'ed, and we get SMARTPOST?!?!

Thumbs down.

This thing is great for cookbooks to see the whole page.

Here's a link to daily free books, they may only be free temporarily so you need to check each day. I've gotten some nice cookbooks in the past.

http://www.ereaderiq.com/free/

You can also get free cookbooks for Kindle from most local libraries and from Amazon Prime Lending. The one I'm reading now is "The Texas Cowboy Cookbook".

Is there a consensus on a light & case/cover to get? I'd like to order it so that I have it when my Kindle gets here...

"consensus" on a woot thread ? When has that happened :-)

For Case good enough to protect it, the only game in town seems to be Amazon leather for $40 - all other case makers are "out of stock" and have probably moved on beyond this old device to feeding demand from 10.1inch tablets. (for cheapskates: get creative with duct tape, and a cheap folder - you might be able to create something cheap and functional!)

For Cover for prettifying: The gelaskins suggested above by someone look great for $20 and can protect against minor mishaps/rain. (for cheapskates: there may be a ziplock bag that might fit!)

Now I know what you mean by slowest method. Eight days have passed, I was still waiting for it to deliver to our local post office and pick up myself. Sigh....

I have not been able to get my Kindle to register. 3G should be good anywhere in the continental US, shouldn't it? - Upon Googling, it seems that most people who have this problem are in Israel or Denmark or someplace. Not Iowa.

Edited: Wellp... I checked the 3G coverage map and that's the problem. I'm in a blank area. I'll take my Kindle up to La Crosse tomorrow and see if it connects.

There must be a way to register without 3G (by logging into your Amazon account on web) with the numbers you see for device id when you click on register.

More on cases.

(1) There seem to be some cheap cases on Ebay. No idea how good they are ... or if they are the kind of cases which break your Kindle DX.

(2) Many DIY case projects made out of cutting inside of hardcover book etc on Youtube and elsewhere on the web. Here is one link with with links to some of these projects !

Yes, I am able to do that, but the Kindle will not "talk" to Amazon. I did bring it with me to town this morning and still no go, even though I definitely have a strong signal here.

I bought this one:

http://www.amazon.com/CaseCrown-Synthetic-Leather-Interior-Compartments/dp/B002QI0X1K/ref=pd_sim_kinh_3

Because I didn't want to pony for the Amazon one and was worried about the hinge (which works fine on my Kindle Keyboard, but the DX is SO much bigger/heavier). I'm pretty happy with it overall. The tab goes front to back, so it goes with the front cover when you fold it back, rather than constantly leaning towards the DX while you're trying to read.
