Kind of dull so far. Weather's good, lots of snow on the ground, dogs are doing good. Especially one pair. One of the past winners was ready to leave a checkpoint and his two lead dogs decided to have some fun first. Nothing he could do but stand and watch. A lot of other teams were laughing when they passed him.

A few years ago we did a land/cruise tour of Alaska and one of the excursions we took was to Jeff King's kennels (?). The guy's a fantastic speaker, probably talked a half hour to 45 minutes straight about the dogs, the races, the sleds. Really interesting.

Maybe not the most fun material, but the simplest one is just a clear container of water. Maybe a thick piece of glass? might also want to consider adding something to the water/jello to partially scatter the incident beam so you can see the path easier.

another idea, make a series of sugar-water solutions with increasing concentration (and thus density and refractive index) and try to correlate refractive index with sugar content. taking the sugar-content idea a little further, a second experiment would be to pick up a handheld refractometer on amazon (looks like you can get a cheap one for less than $40. or perhaps borrow one from the school or somebody into home brewing?) to compare your sugar water measurements against various fruit juice samples.

Also may want to bring along a laser pointer for the experiment, as it will likely be easier to see and measure the "bend" in the beam. Flashlight would only be necessary if you want to show the dispersion of white light into the colored spectrum.

Maybe when Daj wakes up she'll email Cruzer.

Good afternoon. I have been searching to find why edpn.ebay keeps showing up in my history and then when I click on it says something about "engagement with a lot of numbers, etc" happens several times a day. I have not visited ebay or any other sites other than my hotmail and outlook express. I cannot find any reason for this to happen. I have wasted a lot of time on it for sure. I know this is not put in any kind of intelligent fashion, but has anyone else expeerienced this? Malwarebytes, Norton, Microsoft scans do nothing. There are some discussions on the web, but it refers to things I either do not understand or have.

How is that for my daily challenge? Anyhow, I cleaned the lanai, hosed it down, did 4 loads of wash and am just now headed to lunch.

Turken - thanks for the thoughts. Sugar dissolved in water was my first thought, but I wasn't sure if it would be enough by changing the concentrations to change the angle of refraction. This all started because she is obsessed with rainbows right now, so we were using white light, but I did think about getting a laser pointer from the office store too. I think I might.

If it's rainbows you want, here's another kid-friendly activity to consider. If you want to make it more academic, you can use the observed colors to calculate the thickness of the nail polish film.

We've also done this with spray paint as well as nail polish (and "scooped" the film from above rather than lifting from below) to decorate blown eggs and other objects with a fun swirled effect. Just make sure the water bucket is one you don't mind getting paint all over, and you have appropriate thinner for cleaning your hands.
