I've been looking for a tablet for a while, and the Thrive made the shortlist.

I just got my paycheck today.

Well played, Woot.
In for 1.

I got my Thrive today and I love it.

I'm posting this from it now. It's a refurb but it looks like it was never touched by human hands before.

It's the 16GB version but since it takes SD cards and thumb drives the amount of storage isn't as critical as on an Ipad.

I gotta say this is an amazing deal. Thanks Woot!!!

If you go to thriveforums you can root and update very easily and the issue is taken care of. However rooting may void your warranty.

In researching this it seems as though the units that are refurbed and sw flashed by the refurb company have a incorrect version of software, so there is a strong possibility of you receiving a 018 tablet.

So be prepared to root and have a GREAT tablet or return it to woot for a refund.

Very odd. Per my message above, my unit bought through Woot on 1/5/12 had latest build (ROM) .0002 (not older .18) and Android was updated OTA through built-in software to 3.2.1!! In any case, these 32s not tied to 16s sold last week.

Love it - Already using in preference to my iPad (v1). All videos play better (of course, no flash on iPad). Complaints - speakers sound tinny and volume is too low ( but headphones/earbuds fix that problem), the Thrive is heavy (fix is lying on couch and balancing on stomach), and can't find Grindr app.

1.6 lbs is heavy? Man, get off the couch and get thee to a gym!

The description shows version 3.1 not 3.2 as it did in the earlier 16gb sale. The 16gb I received today was 3.1 with an 018 rev.

I really like the mobile tech reviews. Here's one of them comparing the Thrive to the Transformer, and again by itself. Very thorough.

Wondering which apps won't work on the Thrive? Just tried d/ling Grindr off Grindr website/Android market, and got advisory, "This item is not compatible with your device." Hmmm, one reason to keep the iPad handy.

I personally own a Thrive and am using it now. If your looking for it to be an IPad, you'll be disappointed. But if your looking for something less expensive and not demanding as much you will love this. I use this more then my laptop and it takes the load well. This is also great for college because it is more portable then a laptop, you can take notes, and best of all, you don't have to have a big screen sticking up from your desk. If you are in the market for a tablet and don't want to pay the IPad or Xoom price this is a great deal.

bought a bunch of these, most of them will not update to android 3.20. called toshiba tech support and they acknowledged the problem. and there is nothing they can do about. in order to return it it has to be registered first. their website always shows an error if you try to register on-line. so you have to talk to a live person to do so.

Pro: sd slot, HDMI, USB port, price, superior to IPAD in many ways except for the screen resolution.

Con: screen quality is very much inferior to the extremely over-priced IPAD.

i would suggest waiting for Windows 8 tablet, so you can run every full-blown windows softwares.

To be sure we are talking about the same thing, where are you pulling the 018 number from on your Thrive? BTW, if you go into settings, there is a Toshiba software update utility - three updates were waiting when I unboxed, including the Honeycomb upgrade to 3.2.1, which Toshiba released to Thrive in November.

Then you should have gambled and waited. Maybe Woot bought more at 32GB because of the positive buys on the 16 GB. Or maybe this is when the 32 GB became available.

It's no joke, you decided to buy 16 GB when you wanted 32 GB. I bought the Xoom 32 GB and I'm super happy with it for 355. :P Why didn't you buy that one? Are you joking, it was available.

You could buy this, sell the 16 GB on Craig's List or Ebay and have your 32 GB. Look for the Xoom, it's lighter. I bought the 16 GB for my daughter but I'm getting her the expansion chip for her music.

Mine didn't arrive today. Am I whining and crying?

Well, now I'm officially annoyed. This Thrive has the same specs as the quasi brick I finally received yesterday. Mine does NOT have the swype functionality. And it does NOT have the Google Android marketplace icon the picture shows and I tried for several hours to get in and download apps. No luck. After waiting a week to get it I should not have to waste hours trying to add stuff to it that's supposed to already be there. Never again. Sorry, woot. Not cool. This crippled piece of junk is going back. Mine came with 3.1 which I cannot upgrade and I can't root it because I can't download any apps. Moving on.

I just got the 16GB Thrive, and am having the update problem. Not sure I want to root it just yet, but the version it has on it is 3.1.01.5.0018, and the version it says is available is 3.1.01.5.0032, but it errors out on the update and won't go.

The only solution I've seen is to root it, but I'm not sure what the newer version gives me so I don't want to risk voiding the warranty for it just yet.

Before CES, I would've jumped on this. After CES, with the announcement of the Asus Eee Pad MeMO, I will save my money.

Tegra 3 processor (quad core), 1280x800 7" screen, 8-9 hours of battery life, shipping with Ice Cream Sandwich, all for 250 dollars. There better be some fire sales before it hits the market, because afterwards, no one will buy something like this unless it's far below that price.

Be advised that refurbished Thrive's usually will not update OTA. It fails to install. However some genius at thriveforums.org has posted an easily flashable update and this tablet is not hard to root once updated. Just search for "woot purchases".

I've been waiting a year for creation of a (1) stupid; (2) huge tablet (letter-sized) for one use only: to put on a music stand and read pdf files from, with a USB port so I can plug in a foot pedal to turn the pages.

At the moment I have a second monitor (usb) attached to my laptop which sits on a chair next to me. NOT a very portable solution. Does such a thing as a big stupid tablet exist? Will it? (IE I can't pay $800 for this app)

I was one of those Pinkys who pre-ordered this tablet, though I pre-ordered the 8GB version.

So far there has been no 3.2 OTA update available for my tablet, though I've long since rooted it.

If nothing else, this is one of the more rugged tablets I've seen. I've dropped this thing, dropped things on the screen, and virtually abused this thing so badly that I suspected I'd be looking for a replacement by now. No such luck, she just won't die.

At the current price, it's a good deal. The tablet is quite handy and at the very least you can play Grand Theft Auto III and Sim City on it. SplashTop and TeamViewer also work flawlessly for those of us who are into remote desktop connections. iDisplay would also be nice if they'd just get it working better.

Avoid this tablet if you ever want support from it MFG. I had one and took it back after updating to Android 3.2 from Toshiba's own web site the device lost some of the very things that made it attractive in the first place. Number one was the ability to write to the SD chip rendering it useless for additional storage.

The Toshiba people played dumb and had no answers. If you are willing to use the device as it is and never expect on going support fro the mfg this is a good deal, but why limit yourself when there are so many other devices out there and coming down the road.

Ordered a 16GB model right before Christmas and had to send it back to Toshiba for repair because it would not reboot after updates were installed. From the forums I have read this was a common problem. I had to pay to send it to Toshiba's Depot to get repaired so I am waiting to see if they fixed it. BEWARE!! I don't think these were refurbished well, there were all kinds of complaints with these. People were missing the chargers, Apps not there, no service station or android market to download apps. I've bought refurbished things on here before but never had problems like this before. Toshiba/Woot messed up on this one big time. No wonder they keep coming up on Woot, they have a lot of bum units to try and get rid of.

Just got the 16gb from the last Woot, it seems to be running the version that won't update, swype looks really old , and I'm having a hard time with the lack of a menu button... Other things in honeycomb seem kind of odd compared to my phone, but I'll get past them with time I'm sure, and the other issues, I was going to root it anyways. So far happy with it, and actually glad I got the 16 gb for 40 less.

Oh also, anyone else notice that the stock web browser feels extremely slow/clunky? That's gonna get changed soon for sure... Oh wow, and editing a text box in this browser is awful, I may not be able to wait till I root to get another one

I won't buy the Asus Quad Core when it comes out at $250 because I'll wait for Woot to sell a refurbished one for $125 in a few months.

A rather inelegant solution would be to use a large digital photo frame that either accepts PDF files or you can convert your PDF's to JPG for it to display. Some have a wireless remote that you could rig for your foot, while others have variable speeds for flipping through the loaded images.

To anyone who bought the 16 GB on 1/5/12 like I did and is complaining about not having the 32 GB, isn't this why it comes with expandable memory? Spend $20 and get a 16 GB card. I'd prefer that as opposed to full blown internal memory. Wouldn't you? : ) Still waiting on mine to get here. It's supposed to today but I don't think Fed Ex delivers on Saturday.

You should know you facts first. It was Honeycomb 3.2.x for all that eliminated this feature which there are dozens of free apps that fill the void. Android removed it for copy protection reasons. People were copying apk's and books and DRM materials to portable media.

I don't work for any tablet maker but being in IT I work with them daily and Toshiba is about 4th on a scale of 1 best to 10 worst. Apple is easily 9th and Motorola is 5th.

Just curious, who is number 1, 2, and 3? I bought my 16G Thrive the day it was released and love it. I've had no problems with it at all. I watch movies on it, check email, surf the internet all with no troubles. I got this BLUEREX http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B005KMOS74/ cover and love it, too. I store my pictures and movies on the SD card. Can't say enough good things about the Thrive.
