CNET didn't think much of it, especially since it lacked an app for amazon instant video ... which is what use almost all the time. Also (at least at the time of the review) the selection of music channels was meager.

The change would be to have the router connect to the Wi-fi network instead of providing it.
One of the many useful(?) things you can do with dd-wrt.

A wireless bridge will let you plug an ethernet into it and connect it back to your wireless router.

I have a wireless bridge/print server that I use for one of my printers and a couple of computers that were not wifi ready (or that were getting poor signal). Was pretty cheap to setup

I continue to use this player without issue as my primary DVD/BRD video source.

I purchased the Samsung wireless adapter for $25 during a sale from Cowboom.com, but it did not have significant range. Using a wireless bridge from Trendnet, I was able to get it to work without a problem.

However, it appears that I am in the minority. Was thinking of getting one of these for the bedroom TV but maybe I will keep watching.

heh.

My only complaints with my samsung products (5 phones past and current, my tablet, 3 TVs, and some other stuff) is the software updates are slow to come, but that is pretty much just the Android products.

I have had 3 Samsung LCD TVs for 4 years, no problems with any of them.

In general I've been pretty pleased with Samsung appliances & electronics ...
but we have a similar model -- no wifi -- and it's OK but not great. In particular, it frequently locks up when playing older (standard / non-BluRay) DVDs.

I would never do Walmart ship-to-store.

Nothing is worth sitting in an uncomfortable cramped room at the back of a Walmart store waiting 2 hours with no one in line ahead of you for them to find your stuff in the back when the product is right there on the shelf.

I've done ship-to-store several times but never again- ALWAYS had a bad experience- and because they already have your money you can't just walk out. Everyone I know personally has had bad experience with Walmart ship-to-store.

Not a fan of Walmart in general (much prefer Target- or even K-mart)- but I absolutely can't stand doing anything ship-to-store; they are too disorganised.

I am most interested in the specific list of apps this has (what streaming services it supports) as this seems to be a differentiator amongst low-end Blu-Ray players these days.

Netflix
Hulu Plus
Vudu
CinemaNow
Blockbuster
YouTube
MLB.TV
Pandora
Picasa
Twitter
Facebook
Weather

from here: http://reviews.cnet.com/blu-ray-players/samsung-bd-d5300/4505-9991_7-34491595.html

I'm a little intrigued because of Vudu. I haven't seen many others that support this. I have a Vudu box in my living room (with lots of credit remaining, and the PQ of the content on Vudu is great) so it might be nice to have this one in the bedroom. Or maybe I'll get this one to replace my living room Blu-Ray and Vudu box, freeing up one HDMI spot.

The absence of Amazon VoD is disappointing, as are all the negative comments. I'm suffering a bit of buyers remorse (so soon, lol), but I pulled the trigger already, based on thinking of this device as a combination of

1. a streaming media box like an LG ST600 (Samsung doesn't seem to make a stand-alone box like the ST600, but its Samsung Apps seemed similar to LG's Smart TV);
2. a media player like the WDTV or Patriot Box Office;
3. web-browser functionality for the TV; and
4. a Blu-ray DVD player.

Since either #1 or #2 alone could cost $50 or more, it's like getting the other three features for free. In that sense, I'm satisfied with this device, though the deficiencies in the available services may irk me enough to get another Roku.

The other pluses of combining multiple features into one device are lower total power consumption and only one HDMI port is needed (my TV only has 3).

No.

It has to be compatible with this blu-ray player. If wireless is a major deal and you don't want to buy the Samsung adapter, I would pass on this deal if I were you.

And if you are brave, I'm betting you can find another adapter that will work with this device, but it will involve some digging.

Seems awesome if you don't need the internet. Just got a player for xmas, so I don't need, but I got a basic player like this cause I didn't need wifi(not enough time for Netflix, etc.).

Edit: Checking, I have the Samsung 5100. No wifi, but network ready with a little cable. Only Netflix, Vudu, CinemaNow and Youtube apps.

For what its worth, the noise factor is, well, a non factor. This model is quiet no issues. As for speed to play, I can wait 20 extra seconds for previews to come on.....

Refurbed Samsung is not a good bet when you can pick up some new blu-ray players for around the same price. I would expect to see people taking the risk on a refurb at $40, but not $60.

As have I.

I have never had an issue with Wal-Mart's site to store. It is a little slower getting the product to the store, but I've always had the product in my hands within a few minutes after going back there.

I am betting it's based on the store.

As others have said, no, you can't use just any USB adapter, and possibly no non-Samsung adapters.

But as has also been said, you can use almost any WiFi router in bridge mode. If you don't know how to set that up, it does you no good, but if, like quite a few of us, you have some old routers sitting around doing nothing, you'll be set.

However, that doesn't speak to the quality of the player as a player, and it does add some ugliness to the setup, but, in general, anything with an Ethernet port can be used "wirelessly" once you connect it to a bridged router.

Yup-- I picked up a WRT-54G at a garage sale for $5; I use it all the time, Since most people have 10MBit internet or less, a 11/54MBit wifi link is NOT the slowest part of their network; It's usually their crappy Windows PC.

I still use an old-school XBox with XBMC, connected to the LAN at my Home Theater; streaming media off my PC upstairs; Newsgroups /Usenet is still alive after all these years, and an excellent source for media.
