I use VOIP for my work phone (I work at home). The quality sucked bad when we started, but IT has been working for a year to get it fixed and almost have it up to the quality of my land line. Almost.

As far as replacing my home phone, we lose power too often here in the sticks (which unless you have massive battery backup kills your internet modems and routers) and cell coverage stinks, so I want something that is dependable for our primary line.

I'm not sure, but that is exactly my point. VoIP is a great concept, but overall dependability and quality are not there yet to fully engage my support. Latency and flux on download/upload make it far too difficult to be reliable. VoIP data can't get rebounded and resent the way other data can't, so when the conversion between our receiver and the net isn't flawless on the fist attorney at transmission, we hear lag and echos and incomplete words and or conversations.

This looks to be a gamble. For those of you who use it and like it terrific; for all the rest out there who bought and it failed or they returned this item, that is where this apparent never ending supply has come from.

Been thinking about Ooma lately b/c my kid is old enough to start receiving calls from her little friends... and I'm tired of fielding them all on my cell.

$35-dollar-question: what's a decent wireless phone (w multiple remote headsets) to run with this? Anyone have any good/bad experiences?

I use a cheap set of 2 Vtech 5.8's One for the upstairs and one for down...phones are a little too flat on their faces...or maybe my face is a little to fat...but they work decently...they have jacks on the side for a headset...I do use one on my main use phone upstairs. Oh and the caller ID works great.

I bought a refurb from Woot in August and had some issues. Woot and Ooma customer service departments were both amazing and I had a replacement within days. When the second one had issues, they replaced that unit immediately as well. The third one works great and I feel confident they would take care of me if there were any problems.

Make sure Ooma offers local numbers in your area before making this purchase. They did not have them in our area so anyone calling us locally would need to pay long distance. Oh, and the Ooma we received was defective anyway so we had to return it. Not too happy with my Ooma experience but sounds great if you can get local numbers and a unit that works to begin with.

True, poor Internet service (wireless broadband, satellite) won't do so well with any VoIP service. The latency with those is also poor for data services, but most users won't notice/care, especially if that's all they can get. I've provided remote support, and wireless broadband (even if 4G) and satellite are lousy for anything real-time.

Wow - I woot!ed so much my sig can't contain it all!

Long running question: what does this device become when Ooma goes bankrupt? Can we at least mod the firmware and get a router out of the deal? lol

This one time, I wooted off in public.

Once this is installed, any regular phone can be plugged into its output. This includes the base set for any of those giant multi-packs of Unidens you can get at Costco, Target or Wal-mart. What you won't need is a base set with voicemail, since Ooma comes with a very nice voicemail service built in.

[quote postid="4812690" user="chinnasue58"]We need a landline for the kids when left home alone. quote]

Nice thing about cells is the lack of telemarketers. As for the Kids at home, IMO if the kids are old enough to be left home without an adult, they are old enough to have a cell. My oldest daughter (13) has had a phone of her own for alomst 2 yrs. besides always being able to reach her if I need to, she can reach us no matter what. (theres also added features such as parental controls and GPS that have their uses) But to each his own I guess.

I just think its a short matter of time until these services are defunct

Not a great deal. Costco has it bundled with the wireless adapter for $199. (The wireless adapter sells for $50 by itself.) If the bundle works for you, that would reduce the ooma itself to $149 and it is not a Refurb. And costco has a great return policy. And it comes with 60 days of ooma premier service.

Monkeys,
My home phone bill is $15 a month. I am reading that the monthly charges for this item are about $4 and the base cost is $139. This product would pay for itself in 12.6 months, but the warranty is only good for 6 months. I would not take a $139 gamble like that on a refurbished electronic. Just a few bananas for thought.

[Q] If I use this with Google voice (somehow not necessarily directly related to OOMA) does anybody know what is the cost for dialing from outside US into the associated ph number (cell phone level charge, land line charge, Google outbound charge (this would be nice ;-), other?!?); what about the phone number "ported" to OOMA - what's the cost level for dialing into it from outside US?

Bought 2 of these units just before XMAS and have them up and running and they are great.

Units arrived in perfect condition in original OOMA packaging and setup took minutes.

Added Premium to both units took advantage of a free Wireless Adapter and Free # porting.

The Wireless Adapter works great and the # Porting took ONE WEEK.

The voice quality is better than my old VONAGE line!!

If you had any doubts about OOMA....I have to recommend you get it. It will pay for itself in months.

I agree with others that the Costco deal may be better for a lot of people. Especially since it has the wireless adapter and a longer warranty. However, there is also the sales tax that you need to consider.

I'm also reading a lot of ignorant posts in regards to why someone would need a landline (not surprising based on the forum though). Not everyone has quality cell phone service at their home, I'm one of them. Furthermore, some people actually work from home and using a cell phone for several hours a day is not the best option out there.

There are other options besides the Ooma (NetTalk being a comparable one). But the Ooma gets great overall reviews from many different sources.

I have a cordless phone base connected to my Ooma base (which is an older Hub), which provides 4 handsets around the house.

I also have a Ooma Scout (obsolete now) with another cordless base on it for another two extensions. I avoid using that one because Scouts have some echo - a inherent problem with relaying, and which might be why Ooma discontinued them. But I mostly use that phone for the Caller ID - the base is wall-mounted and very visible in the kitchen, so it serves my purposes, and the Scout gives a second location to access voicemail. This functionality has been replaced with the new Telo handset, which takes the idea of the Scout one step further by turning it into a full DECT handset, and at the same cost as the Scout.

No, but neither will a regular cordless phone. If you run your router/modem, Ooma and phone handset through a battery backup, your service will stay on as long as your battery lasts and your ISP stays up. And plugging a corded phone directly into the Ooma means you don't have to worry about maintaining power to cordless phones, giving you longer battery time.

Well...this does allow you to associate your GOOGLE VOICE # with the 2nd line on your phone and you can set it so that when you dial out it shows your GV number in the caller ID. They call it GOOGLE VOICE EXTENSION I think.

I am assuming that dialing into it from outside the US would be standard Long Distance rates depending on where you are calling from....that is unless you are calling from another OOMA device (Free calls from OOMA # to OOMA #) or using their OOMA App.
