Newer Model PLEASE - the older model needs serious firmware updates, but I think the BIOS wont accept the newer updates - thus the need for a newer model......

THIS model has been VERY EXPENSIVE to maintain....

Just curious, is there any woot! stats out there?

Ex.:
-Highest priced woot! item
-Lowest priced woot! item
-Highest commenting wooter(that isn't a bot or a price referencer)
-Highest woot count by a wooter
-Fastest sellout
-Highest Revenue Day- wootoff and nonwootoff(and item)
-Lowest Revenue Day- wootoff and nonwootoff(and item)
-Longest time before a sellout on a woot-off item
etc.

Silly question, and pardon my ignorance, but isn't the phone service offered in many cable providers' bundles already VoIP? (I won't name names, but my cable provider rhymes with komkast - oh wait...). I know when we switched from Verizon to Comcast's triple play, we had to get a special modem that does Internet & the phone. If that IS VoIP, then the only difference we'll notice is no more $40/month extra going to Comcast, right? I don't know... I'm on the fence (sarcasm).

Appreciate any serious insight! (Awe heck, I even appreciate sarcastic insight too!)

the quality is one thing...the dependability is another....hard wired phones work 99.99% time, where as after a storm our cable is usually not and if you need to call the police/fire/911 at that time you're sol with voip

I went to walgreens, came back... packed a box, left to the post office and shipped it.

I then went to a restaurant, waited for my food to eat, took a LONG time eating it.

Now I am finally home, and this woot is STILL here

I got a MajicJack Plus, much cheaper $69.99 and includes 1 year of service. Ooma still requires a $20 something a month charge.

MWPollard wrote:I expect you mean that MagicJack Plus doesn't require a computer connection anymore. It will still need an Internet connection.
Nowadays, Internet is as reliable as old-style phone service, and is often coming from the same provider.

If your concern is about power outages (an issue that will also affect any cordless phone), get a UPS - Uninterruptible Power Supply - and connect all your Internet connection-related devices, DSL/cable modem, router, switch, Ooma, cordless phone base, etc, to it. No more problems.

Edit: A decent UPS can be bought for $40-50 at most big box stores. It will provide coverage for maybe 30min of blackout, if you only have required connection devices connected (no computer), and will eliminate power flicker/reboot worries.

Agreed. Have my network infrastructure set up on a UPS, including the Ooma and cordless. Been running for over a year with no hiccups. Rock solid. Superior call quality and features over my old copper landline and monthly bill is $3.47. Also can access the phone account remotely via my iPhone or any web browser to check call logs and voicemail. Relying on cell service alone is just not feasible for so many reasons...

Yes, actually, we do call long distance a lot.

However, it's not to my relatives here in the US, but to my Wife's relatives in the UK. That's why I use Vonage as those calls are free. Making those calls with my cell would be cost over $100 per month.

Comments about why people still have landline phones are about as original as those asking Mac compatibility questions. Can we please stop?

I've used Ooma for years both for personal and business. I love it. I even got one of these refurb units from woot! a while back and it has worked just as good as the one I purchased directly from Ooma. Great Buy!

I have an Ooma for 2 years - the "charge" is about $4 per month - actually regulated taxes. I believe the OPTIONAL premier service (voice-mail, etc.) is an additional $10/mo.

bought one in Dec Woot, called them specifically to qualify and find out how it would work w my 2 line phone and more importantly phone line quality as I still do P|C to P|C modem where it has to be good....
Poor customer service and support, promised no issues w PC to PC, I can not get the 1st connection. Phone line quality for calls is not good, often drops out one side or the other w calls for 15-30 seconds. It would be cheap, you won't have 911 support in a power outage except if you have cell. Can't see that I will keep it even for home use. If you want half ass phone service really cheap it might be for you, w premier and all the rest the value and quality isn't there.

Ooma...at most is 119.99$/year for OOMA PREMIUM.

119.99/ 12 = $ 9.99....that isn't $20.

And that is a completely optional package as you still get unlimited US & Canada calling with OOMA Basic and after taxes & fees = $ 3.47/month.

Yes, many telcos are actually using VoIP themselves.

If they give you (or mount on a wall) a box that connects to the TV cable and to which you connect your phone (or home phone wiring), they are using VoIP. If they give you (or mount on a wall) a box that connects to a fiber optic line and to which you connect your phone (or home phone wiring), they are using VoIP.

Which of course means that questions of reliability between them and Ooma are irrelevant - since they are using the same infrastructure. And Ooma has been repeatedly judged to have better call/sound quality.

Sound quality was my deciding factor. I got Ooma because I was starting an intensive job search at the time and wanted to avoid high long-distance bills - but I needed my call quality to be good, which also excluded unlimited cell phone plans.

Have to agree. Been using MagicJack for 8 years or so. Minor glitches here and there, but for the most part, it works. Can only send one page faxes, but so...I bought the extra 5 year plan. For 120 bucks I am good for a long time to come. Just upgraded to the version that doesn't require a computer. I got the old one that still has 7 more years on it.

This space for rent.
