...a Pioneer VSX-521-k 5.1 surround receiver! Now, this can't be a working receiver I thought, so I ran and grabbed a couple speakers, some wire and hooked it up. It seems to work great!
Congrats on the Pioneer receiver!

I don't think that there's been a letter in many months.

Update on my Sherwood Netboxx.
It appears to work fine, though I can understand why it was returned. I would never spend the money asked for this thing but it's not too bad. Now I'll rag on it a while...
I have 5.1 speakers. I connected the FR/FL to FR/FL, C to C, SW to SW, and SRR/SRL to SRR/SSL. Auto speaker setup played the tones through all six speakers and promply told me I had FR/FL, C, and SW. Trying to adjust these settings I found that I couldn't turn on SRR/SRL without also turning on SR/SL. The auto setup then failed when the Left and Right Surround speakers failed to play. I set them up manually, figured I'd lose the sound that should come from those side channels, and moved on.
Much later in the manual there was a table showing how the speakers were utilized by the different DTS/Dolby modes. I noticed that the 7.1 modes used all of the speakers (duh) but that the 5.1 modes didn't use the Surround Rear R/L speakers. Ohhh! Even though there were no instructions for doing this you have to hook the Surround Rear R/L speakers to the Surround R/L jacks if you only have a 5.1 speaker set instead of the intuitively-obvious action of hooking rear speakers to rear speaker jacks. Manual Fail. After I did this the auto speaker setup was successful (and then I promptly boosted the base). Now, this does free up the rear speaker jacks for the supported separate zone if have one (I don't).
(Being as this is my first non-PC streaming device, aside from Netflix-via-PS3, I can't really directly compare it to anything else.)
The VuNow "pod" is a little underwhelming but usable (due to the artificial low-definition restriction on the PS3 playing YouTube VuNow beats the PS3 hands-down for that purpose). I think there's a software problem because when you start VuNow it'll sometimes go into a boot loop at about the point it says "starting server". (If I were debugging the code I'd look at what happens when the attempt returns an error that the server's already started.) Once this happens a simple power off/on seems to fix it and VuNow starts fine.
When I first started VuNow it sounded like an echo chamber. Selecting stereo and then back to Auto Surround cleared that up. I think that it happened again so the sound selection may be something that I have to do each time I start VuNow.
VuNow is limited to a max of 720p, but that's no big deal. The USB wireless dongle is 802.11g but I have it wired (it's apparently 10/100 but streaming video easily fits into that) to my media center router (I have two WNDR4000 routers set up in client-bridge mode with the triple 5GHz N channels dedicated to the link) so the obsolete/slow/congested WiFi-G is unused and no worry.
Supposedly this will work with some PlayOn server software that you run on your PC to get Netflix, but I use my PS3 for that. VuNow is DLNA 1.0 compatible (not certified) so it should be compatible with any modern server software (including Windows Media Player). From what little I've read 1.0 is client (pull) driven only while 1.5 supports "playing to" the device (push) from media server.
YouTube works pretty well, though if you select "Channels" from the side menu VuNow reliably crashes and reboots. I experimented a little with the "popular websites" and online TV/radio selections. Workable but definitely not like a PC.
I haven't yet tried playing a Blu-Ray from the PS3 but my daughter's Skyrim gaming didn't seem to take an arrow in the knee.
What this thing really does for me is:
- High(er)-Def TV YouTube without hooking up a laptop,
- Combining the audio digital cable/TOSLINKto the receiver and HDMI to the TV into one connection through the receiver (must still use TOSLINK from the TV to the receiver for over-the-air play),
- I can get 5.1 sound via HDMI when I hook up my gaming laptop for 65-inch gaming (the Olevia only passes through 2.1 or 3.1 via TOSLINK), and
- Elimination of my only rationale/excuse to upgrade my VSX-1015 to a VSX-1021 :-(
