$225... for a tablet that went on sale for $150 not long ago. Never mind the fact that this is a refurb with only 90 days of warranty.

by the way, WebOS is being open-source, with the initial code just released and more by the end of the year.

So you're best bet in buying this are those developers willing to give webos another shot.

As a webos tablet...worthless. As an android tablet, very useable, but bulky compared to the ipad. I got a fire sale unit, but if I didn't, at this price, I'd buy a kindle fire.

I got a 16gb during the fire sale for $100. I still think this is a decent price for the size and specs. I love webOS, but the app selection was lacking, and it was a bit laggy. I loaded the alpha of CM9 (basically, Android 4.0 - Ice Cream Sandwich) and I was blown away at the quality of if for such an early build. It runs faster, I haven't found an app that doesn't work, and overall the usability is much improved over my Android 2.3 phone.

If you're looking for a tablet of this size, I'd recommend it. Kind of sucks to pay $70 over the new price a few months back, but that was then and this is now. Probably one of the last chances you'll have to own this hardware.

Just get it, it's a great unit at a great price, most refurbs are like new.

No, it's not a $600 ipad, no 20,000 apps to do the same thing.

Plays flash well. Also ereader, skype video phone, web browser, picture frame, free 50GB cloud storage, free QuickOffice, and Angry Birds.

WebOS is actually pretty good and getting better everyday. to answer your question, YES, you can install android on this tablet.

WebOS can try all it wants to stay afloat, but it will never go anywhere.

WebOS is far from dead. I just got another update the the OS from HP.

Additionally, WebOS is going open source.

I had planned to put another OS on my touchpad, but WebOS really is good! It is better than the other mobile OSs in a lot of ways. It just needed more time than the former head of HP gave it.

"HP has begun to open source the code for the WebOS mobile operating system. It will release the code for the platform's various tools a little bit at a time, with all of the code becoming available by September. To begin the process, HP has released the source code for the 2.0 version of the webOS developer tool Enyo."

Not really an opinion. No one is going to want a WebOS tablet when Android and iOS are dominating the market and has way more development. It is really a dead end tablet OS. It's like Nokia trying to keep Symbian alive.

Just because you got an update from HP doesn't mean it isn't dead. They already wrote their tablets off as a loss (hence the fire sale a couple months back). They are obligated to update it because they have a certain amount of time they have to support a product they released.

Even if it does go open source, I don't see people veering away from Android, an already dominant mobile open source OS.

Cracks in the case is a big issue with the HP Touchpad. I have one and have a crack near one of the speakers that apparently is fairly common.

The last firesale on EB charged something like $20 for shipping plus sales tax so they were more like $180. I was one of the really lucky ones who tried to buy one but kept getting locked out on EB and PP. After it was over I thought I missed out even though my PP account did show a purchase but 5 seconds later it showed a refund. Oh well I thought. Then a couple days later I get an email from EB saying here's $100 for the HP touchpad issues. Went on EB and bought one for $225 with case, used the $100 EB coupon so ended up paying $125 shipped. I really like it for the email and simple web stuff.

Winner of the fire sale lottery, I really like my TouchPad. The WebOS is pretty good but my big gripe is the web browser not having tab support. I put on CM7 a couple of weeks ago and been using Maxthon web browser and it is great.

I scored some free games for the webOS and they are great, very well done. The games on Android for tablets are basically phone games on a bigger screen so they look "fuzzy".

The audio of this thing amazed me. I didn't expect much have been very impressed.

My wife has a Galaxy Tab 10.1 and likes the TouchPad. The Tab crashes a lot of software that CM7 has no problems with. And we like the screen ratio better on the TouchPad.

Yeah, I own one and can also say that it's cracking around the speakers. WebOS on the TouchPad runs great, but it's very limited with a lack of apps, especially free ones. Cyanogenmod is a good alternative, and still allows you to dualboot it and use both WebOS and Android. Cyanogenmod runs fine most of the time, but is still in development builds for the TouchPad, which is noticeable in it's stability. Lots of apps will freeze and crash randomly, or the speakers will make strange sounds, and video and music playback is slow and freezes a lot. Besides the problems, it's still quite usable, but I would just warn you not to expect that Cyanogenmod will run as good as an off-the-shelf Android tablet.

If you want your TouchPad to be stable, stick to WebOS. If you don't care and just want moew apps, feel free to try out Cyanogenmod.

Guess you're not factoring in that people are putting Android on these things. So if WebOS dies off, there are options.

WebOS road map to be open sourced this year:
January: Enyo 2.0 and Enyo source code Apache License, Version 2.0

February: Intended project governance model, QT WebKit extensions, javascrapt core, UI Enyo widgets

March: Linux standard kernel, Graphics extensions EGL, LevelDB, USB extensions

April: Ares 2.0, Enyo 2.1, Node services

July: System manager (“Luna”), System manager bus, Core applications, Enyo 2.2

August: Build release model, Open webOS Beta, Open webOS 1.0

source: http://www.webosnation.com/hp-s-open-source-webos-roadmap

By the way, Enyo is a great platform to use to develop apps. With Enyo, you write the app one time & can then readily publish it for many different platforms.

Once upon a time WOOT was a place where you could get screaming good deals on limited quantity items. My one and only WOOT was $100 savings on a $250 a high-end video card so I got two! The last retail price on the TouchPad was $150. I would think the WOOT price would be $50 by now. They are collector items now so maybe that explains the high price. Oh well I like getting the WOOT emails that way I know my email is working every day

I've wanted one of these for a while, but more towards the fire sale price. If it was refurb for the fire sale price I'd be interested, but as is I already have a Nook Color running CM7 and a ViewSonic Gtablet on CM7, so it's hard to throw the extra money on something that I already sort of have covered. Sorry, I just can't justify it as much as I really want to.

fmcwoot wrote:Couple questions... Wasn't HP getting out of the tablet business. Wasn't that the reason for the fire sale?

Yes, the TP didn't sell that great so HP abandoned the market, hence the firesale. They might come back when Win8 is around.

And speaking of "fire", isn't this a whole lot better than the Kindle Fire that sells for a few dollars less.

Well depends, I prefer the bigger screen of the TP over my wife's Nook color (7" like the Fire). I also like having the dualboot of webOS and Cyanogen9 (ICS). Despite the dearth of apps, the webOS way of multitasking was pretty slick (moving card or app windows around) and something I keep trying to do in Android. That said, with the ICS alpha version of Cyanogen installed I can't remember the last time I used webOS. ICS is amazing on the touchpad, especially the revamped gapps, browser and even has an actual task switcher!

Pricing I think this is ok. The firesale prices are gone. Considering I spent a month straight of scouring the Slickdeals firesale thread to score 2 32GB touchpads, the $220 price isn't that bad. If I didn't have one I would go with the 16GB on sellout.

Now how cool would it be if these were put in the recent bags of crap?
