I have CyanogenMod9 (Ice Cream Sandwich) on mine, and it's great! I literally never boot to webOS anymore.

I paid $99 for my 16 GB model and $200 would still be a bargain thanks to Android. The browsers available for WebOS are pretty sad and not compatible with a lot of sites. You know, little niche sites like Yahoo Mail. Once you install Android it's like a real computer. The wireless has been dropping lately which has been the only downside. Hopefully when I move to ICS that will be fixed.

I have one, purchased refurbished from the "final" ebay sale. Running Android 4.0 (ICS) and loving it.

I seem to have a relationship with this tablet. I got 2 when HP first sold them off new; one from HP directly, and the other from the BestBuy website (another interesting story). These were both $99 for the 16GB. I used one and sold the other on ebay.

I quickly learned that 16GB was not enough storage for my usage and when I found out HP was running a refurb sale on ebay, I jumped on it again. I got 2 32GB units at $149 each. I once again sold one and the used 16GB, keeping the remaining 32GB.

For this one, I didn't really need it, but figured I keep the streak going. Applied a Jumbowoot discount, and it's mine for an even $200. Should be able to flip it for a $60-70 profit.

I bought one in the firesale, and I'm very happy with it. Even happier after I got an iCade for Christmas (on sale for $60 at NewEgg right now, BTW). Load up Android and MAME4Droid works great, it even has an iCade setting built in.

That's all I used the current Android install for, though... it's really buggy. Wifi in particular is a PITA. For everything other than MAME I switch back over to WebOS.

Yes I did get a 32GB Touchpad at the firesale price of $150 (taxes/shipping $170) from best buy however these tablets are still a GREAT buy at $225.00. The hardware specs of the touchpad are comparible if not better than the ipad2's. It'll be darn near impossible to get a tablet with these specs & 90 day warranty for $225.00...also its 32GBs.
As stated by a few its not difficult to dual boot w/ Android 2.3 via CM7. I will update to CM9 (ICS) once its more stable. I have an ipad and I rarely use it. A must have for techies.

This looks to be about 10% below the average clearing price for refurbished webpads on ebay. Even slightly used webpads are going for over $200. So it looks like a reasonable deal.

Still, I wouldn't buy it intending to run webOS even with HP's open source plans. Way too limited an application base. And be careful, even the applications that are there are no longer supported. Facebook app was last updated in March 2011. Do you honest expect any more updates for a dead platform?

With Cyanogen close to an Android Ice Cream Sandwich release (there is one now but it's not yet full-function, i.e. consumer-ready), this would IMHO only be a very good buy as an Android tablet.

Either way, you're looking at a community-supported platform. I'll go with the community that has the most members and the best base of applications.

I've been burned on open source/community developed software in the past. Right now they're missing graphic acceleration if I remember, so good luck on hi-def video. And it could be the community gets bored of the touchpad and moves on to new projects before you ever get it.

Might be a fun toy, but not something I'd expect to be supported by community or HP in 2 years.

Graphic acceleration is supported on Gingerbread (2.3), so I believe they'll also get it up on Ice Cream Sandwich.

If you want full function on your webpad today, run 2.3.

I got one on the $149 blowout, too, and I love, but it is a little unfair to complain that Woot is charging more than that. When HP dumped inventory, it was more like a Black Friday special. Heck, some folks bought all they could charge on their credit cards and were reselling on ebay for nearly $300.

The correct comparison is what other tablets can you get for $219 that have similar build quality? And frankly, I like the WebOS much better than the ipad.

I am sure I will take a whooping for this, but I have 4 touchpads, one for everyone in my family. I also have an ipad. In many ways, the touchpad is superior, as it has a better sounds system, and is much more compatible with Flash. Yes, you won't find every possible app for WebOS, but the apps that do exist are excellent, and cover just about everything an average user would want to do, email, twitter, word processing, web browsing, etc. I hope that an open source webOS can survive, but as it exists, it is very reliable and user friendly. Of course you can hack it for Android as well. Buy this if you just want something that works well at a great price. Make sure you get the HP case for this, as it's quite good and you need it to hold it at a proper angle. It is heavy after awhile.

I picked the 16 gb version up last time woot had the touchpad up for sale just before anyone even heard of a firesale and while I still paid more than the firesale price, woot was nice enough to either give me a $100 credit or return the tablet, since I really like the tablet in its OEM form I took the credit.

After being an owner for awhile and never owning a previous webOS product or palm product for that manner here is my take on it. The webOS operating system is a beautiful OS. The card browsing is a great feature and is great for multitasking and stacking/organizing. I personally like it because I can surf the web and listen to iheartradio at the same time. The just type feature is a great as it does what it states. A couple of updates back HP opened up the camera to additional functionality allowing for self portraits. The long awaited Quickoffice is here and HP has finally unlocked Bluetooth to allow for speakerphone calling for non webOS phones. The idea of being able to print to HP printers is awesome and I have used it my share of times. Having flash integrated into the web browser is great as well as it eliminates the need for 3rd party apps to do what you want to do and you can watch movies in browser that are flash based. (sorry netflix users keep moving if you want to watch these movies on a tablet).

In regards to apps I wouldn't even bother comparing because HP loses but in my opinion its enough to be satisfying. You can run any of the programs for the pre on the touchpad and the app store is still growing. My only real gripes are minor but no netflix integration, no Pandora app but thanks to flash you can play that directly from a browser. The speakers get very faded and tinny after playback and heavy use but usually rebooting fixes it. And I can't open zip files. But overall I feel that the touchpad is a great tablet, in fact I just wrote this whole review on it while listening to pandora.

Bought a G-Tab on Woot, screwed around for a few days. Glorified toy, not stable enough "rooted" and OE OP.System awful!. Kindle Fire was cool, but still a Toy, not a good Ereader, not enough to replace a Laptop.
Wife loves her Ipad 2. I didn't want to buy it, but is the only Tablet I could give her that I wouldn't have to constantly screw with.
Until someone makes an affordable Windows tab we're stuck with Apple as the only Tablet viable for an average user who doesn't want to root or do work arounds.

Actually am rooting Android 4.0 (CM9, ICS) on to one this weekend.

Get one if you can and put Android on it. Makes it a full Android tablet at half the price.

My touchpad has been completely hijacked by 4 year old twin boys and can keep them occupied for hours. Their favorite thing is the PBS website which has many curious George and Cat in the hat games. They can even google and find it themselves and can play about 95% of the games on the touchpad (some would be better with mouse). Downside is that there are not a lot of options for viewing movies: you pretty much have to cough up the $ through Roxio which runs the touchpad movie program if you want to rent a movie to watch on the road. It is possible to stream netflix through but that requires a wireless connection and some creativity.

pfffft!

I ultimately sold my rooted Touchpads running CyanogenMod in favour of my Acer Iconia A500 tab. The touchpad was awesome, and I prefer the shape of it more, but it couldn't compare with the performance of native Android custom ROMs. CyanogenMod is an awesome display of open source dev, but it is still very buggy.

I wish when they are labeled "Refurbished" they could specify what was wrong. I expect that most of them were returned with the same defect. You know, sort of like the the TV pharmacutical disclaimers, "This pill, recommended to ease social anxiety, may cause blindness, flatulence, heart arythmia, paralysis, insanity or death."
"This tablet may have an adapter jack that will break loose from its PCB connections, there may be up to 10% of the pixels non-functioning, etc."

You're comparing the *8Gb* rather-slow kindle Fire to the *32Gb* Touchpad, saying the Fire is $20 less.

You do realize that the 16Gb Touchpad has *double* the memory that the Fire has, and is on sale at Deals.Woot for $30 *less* than the Kindle, and *isn't* a cut-down version of it's OS? ...Not to mention the details of how each OS runs...

These were $150 on the first sale, when they were selling them at a loss. These are the 32Gb versions, not the 16Gb versions. If you want the 16GB version, they're on sale at Deals.Woot for $170.

If I were choosing between this and Kindle Fire, I'd go with the TouchPad.

Don't forget, if you get Splashtop for WebOS, you can remote desktop into your home PC, and pretty much do anything you want on your home computer. I crank out photoshop edits from my Touchpad.
