So much more expensive elsewhere and the reviews are awesome, saying it's worth every penny... at the much higher price they paid.

This is when they sold the XV-11 last November, for the same $299.99:

Since dbcwoot says that the 11 and 12 models are essentially the same,

We've had the XV-11 for several (2?) years now and are very happy with it.

It handles short carpet fringe, but anything long enough to get sucked in and wrapped around will need your intervention.

Twice we have burned out the gear due to too much animal hair (cats, rabbits, and dog) and the company has promptly sent us a replacement unit with a return box for the old one.

OK, so here are the main differences between this and a Roomba.

The neato is an 'intelligent' robot - when it starts out it analyzes the room with a laser. Once it has mapped out the room, it works its way around logically in straight lines, deviating only to avoid obstacles.

The roomba works by bouncing around off walls and obstacles for so long it eventually gets the whole floor (supposedly).

Further, roombas tend to need more cleaning after they've cleaned your floor - since they use brushes, hair tends to get tangled in them as opposed to the rubber 'beaters' on the neato.

The neato has far more powerful suction - as a result, it's noisier but as it works more logically than the roomba, it should be done cleaning quicker. However, it doesn't have a side brush like the roombas so it may not clean along edges as well.

The xv11 and xv12 are the same model: the latter is the model that was (up to now) sold at Target.

I was going to get a neato but I found a roomba in our local junk shop for eight bucks so I settled for that instead.

Before pulling the trigger, be aware that the rear of the case on some neatos with older firmware have melted due to a faulty docking procedure.

Welcome to the world of robots!

I have had 3 roombas and now have the XV-11. Amazing difference. Roomba is only a brush. Like a carpet sweeper. This thing has 2 motors. One to "drive" it and one to run a vacuum. Yes, a real vacuum that pulls suction. It pushes the air through a filter like any other vacuum. I was amazed the first use (and still am) as to how much dust this thing picks up. Very clean floors. Pulls dirt out of the spaces between tiles in the kitchen where the grout is lower.

Second, it does, as others have said, map the room. Then goes around it twice on the perimeter, then vacuums it in the middle in back and forth passes. When I set it at bedtime, in the morning, the whole first floor is marked with those cool "just vacuumed" lines. Just looks cleaner that way! Oh, and I discovered that it will just change the direction it vacuums from north/south to east/west and even has done diagonal a couple times. Amazing. And better overall coverage.

Also, it will vacuum an entire room, then go through the door and do the next room. In my case, it thinks that the couch and chair are close enough to make the family room a separate room from the kitchen. So it does the first room, then the next, then on to the dining room, then the living room. Mapping each one.

If it runs out of power, it shuts off the vacuum and powers back to the charging base. It's weird, cause it's very quiet when it's just moving and not vacuuming. After it charges, it starts up again and goes back to the exact spot it left off and finishes the entire floor of the house. The startup can be really startling the first time!

Also, the upgrade of firmware made it dock better, kind of wiggling it's butt until it's happy with the connection. :-)

It handles weird changes in terrain really well, as the base of "my" chair is a flat circular wooden base, and it goes up and down and around it with no issues. It does climb up onto the base easily, instead of bumping off it like Roomba.

I love this thing. Bought mine from Hammacher and Schlemmer because of their lifetime warranty program, not trusting that it would be really long-lasting. But I've had it a year (or more?) and it's no issues. Clean the beater bar and bearings once a month or so and it's happy!

I spent a lot more, and STILL think it was worth it. This price is very good.

Hope that helps!

If you have any general questions about the Neato XV-11, search the Neato Robotics Forum first, your question has most likely already been asked and answered there. There is also a ton of info about the Neato and how it compares to the Roomba and other cleaning robots as well.

Ironic how during a Woot Off the Roombas always seemed to kill the momentum. Just moved into a new place and was hoping for a Woot Off knowing the Roomba was inevitable because I hate vacuuming. Now this little baby comes along and I think I am going to drop $300 on it. Thanks Woot!

I don't think I understood why Thompson gets "250 points" just for being tall. If he were 250 _pounds_ - ok, I could understand that.

Of course: If he were a hundred thirteen and a half kilos - I'd be totally lost...

Hmm...the fact that my dog tries to kill all my children's toys that are slightly robotic tells me he is highly intelligent. He has probably also started digging a bunker in our backyard which would explain the muddy feet when we don't find holes. Gotta be prepared for the robot invasion...or possibly aliens or zombies I guess. If I brought this home I would probably have a terrier running around in a foil hat with bits of robot hanging from his mouth.

Ladies and Gents, your missing the point here.

Considering we may need to bring a real horse with us for steps A and B, there is no reason we couldn't set it outside for Thompson to see. Perhaps in said orchard where the horse can naturally feed on apples.

Then, once the Neato XV-12 All Floor Robotic Vacuum System with the precious stones is secure, we can escape and leave the horse as a consolation for poor ol' Thompson.

In fact, we should leave a horse at every caper from now on. It shall be our calling card!

Actually, it does -- and it's way easier to clean the parts afterwards with a Neato (because there's no stupid brush for all that fur to get wrapped around, and not as many teeny-tiny crevices inside the machine for dust to get trapped in). We bought a Neato XV-11 several months ago when our Roomba's motor finally died, and it's done a fine job keeping up with our Terrapoo's shedding.

I bought a refurbished Roomba during a woot-off in August and LOVE it. I have hardwood floors and several rugs, and it really does a nice, thorough job. I do make a point to clean it after each room (which is a pain) because the dog hair wraps around all of the moving parts.

I am intrigued by the Neato, and would love to try one out, but I'm not quite ready to fork out $300 at this time. Will consider it for the future, though.

I have had three XV-11s because the first two malfunctioned. Neato support is awesome and we love our XV-11. Works very well with our 100 pound Labrador retriever. In comparison the Roomba Pet model was horrible, bumps into everything which takes longer to clean the same room and missed spots. Also, cleaning out the Neato is much easier than my Roomba. By the way, Roomba broke after 8 months and Roomba support did nothing to fix it. Is Neato more expensive, yes! However it's a better machine with better support. By the way, I paid $399 for this a year ago on another site, still very happy.

After hemming and hawing for years over buying a roomba I took the plunge and bought the XV-11 and I'm glad I did.

Mr. yrguide was pretty angry when it showed up at the house, we can do this ourselves...$300 waste of money...blah blah blah. I convinced him to just try it and after a few days he was recommending it to his sister.

It's a game changer, it's smart, efficient, and Neato's customer service is second to none.

I highly recommend this vac. The reviews on Amazon are awesome.

I also advise you spend the time and make sure the firmware on this unit is up to date when you get it.

Buy buy buy. I *love* my neato.

We have had one for about 4 months and absolutely love it. With wood floors, I used to often find dust and crumbs stuck on my feet because I didn't sweep any more than once a week, but now that we have our Neato XV-11 All Floor Robotic Vaccuum run twice a week, our floors always look and feel clean.

We use it for the bedrooms, office, and hallway as well, where it is carpeted, and it seems to be effective there as well. It's nice to come home to it's "crop circles" on the carpet, and know that my house is cleaner than how I left it.

I second everything you said.. This vacuum is pretty amazing. I've never had a Roomba, but after reading many reviews, we bought Rosie (yes, we named our Neato after the Jetson's robot). We call the "just vacuumed lines" "crop circles" at our house.
