Wow, what breed and year is your cat? Mine totally don't have that function but they're 2006 shorthair and 2007 longhair models.

On the actual media player - it might convince my daughter to stop stealing her dad's Droid and my media-capable phone. Of course, if my cats have existing functions that she can learn to use, I'd love to know about it.

or maybe this from CNet yesterday:

So it's roughly as beefy as the Samsung Intercept that I got from Virgin Mobile, which has a MicroSDHC slot, a slide-out keyboard (on-screen keyboards suck), custom ROMs available, root exploit available without tethering, and can even be a phone if you really want it to (but not required, though no contract if you do).

Those retail for $99 and can be found on sale regularly through VMU's website or Best Buy for $59-79 depending on the retailer's mood of the week.

It's missing one thing, though, which actually has bugged me just a little. The Intercept doesn't have easy media player control through physical buttons. I have to unlock the screen and hit something on the touchscreen, which sucks if I have it plugged in to the car's audio and just want to skip the track. After one close call, I'm not trying that move again while driving.

Dammit.

In for three.

HD video playback (720p) for crisp and clear video quality

720×480 (as mentioned in the specs) is 480p; 1280x720 would be 720p, which this device is not.

HVGA, 480 x 320, 262k Colors

Even though it can read 480p video, it would hardly be "crisp" on HVGA.

I've got a ShoqBox from Philips which I adore.

It only has 256 MB of storage so it requires regular rotation/maintenance.

It was all, if not more, the price of today's offering at Sam's Club when I bought it. I use the ShoqBox to listen to OTR (Old Time Radio) to drift off asleep.

I'm going to toddle off, but if this is around in the morning, woot may be lacking one for sale...

Does anyone know if this works with a Skype/Google Voice app to actually make phonecalls?

The official Google Voice app requires a phone since it still uses minutes to make calls and only uses data to set up the connection. There are a few paid apps on the market like GrooVe IP and gVoice VoIP that will let you talk using only data, which should work on this device, at least in theory.

If you're using custom roms (say, like Cyanogen), you should be able to set the volume up and volume down buttons to be track skip forward and back in the cyanogen settings. A lot of other custom roms have this feature too.

The sad part is that I've actually been pining for a toaster with built in breadbox for a while now - can't get the old one out of my mother-in-law's hands, and all of the ones I gave away as wedding presents are still in use as well.

I ALMOST jumped on this. But then I read the comments. Yeah, 8 gb is just not enough... I have another music device with that much and I ran out before I even got my obscure music on there. =/

I would want 20 gb or 30 gb. =/

For a tainted/bad (i.e reported "stolen") esn cell phone off Fleabay...I won't consider owning anything "stigmatized", even for free.

You'd pay north of $200 for a good esn Nexus..

Yes, actually. My recommendation would be the original Motorola Droid. Prior to selling it for $60 4 months ago, I used it as an MP3 Player. I used Liquid Gingerbread, overclocked the phone to 1.1GHZ, was able to play music/games/browse on WiFi like a pro. With it's unlocked bootloader and nearly indestructible screen and metal case, it doesn't get much better than that, and you can get them brand new for as little as $80. You might be able to get a used one for $40. www.swappa.com is a good place to purchase them.

To add to the comments recommending used Android phones, I recently purchased a used Droid Incredible (good esn, excellent condition) for $80 total for my son to use as an iPod alternative. If you can live without Angry Birds, a Droid Eris can be had, hacked, and overclocked for half that. All thanks to eBay.

For both, skip activation, turn on airplane mode and Wi-Fi, and you've got great, inexpensive Android media players that I worry less about my kids breaking ... AND, they never ask to play with my wife's or my phones!

And, if you (or your kids) can't live without Angry Birds, I recommend the Mattel Board Game, Angry Birds Knock on Wood- peels you away from electronics, and lets you build and knock down buildings and pigs in the "real" world. My five year old carries the board game around with him like it's a PMP.

I highly recommend squeeze commander. Installed it on my wife's kindle and it makes controlling a squeezebox a joy. Not sure if it would work quite as well on the smaller screen but would still be an improvement over the remote you are using now. I also have ipeng on my iPhone and that works well on a similar sized screen as this.

I see no mention of rhapsody. I know some other Phillips players are compatible. Anyone know if this one is? I would love to upgrade my sons Sansa.

Two answers to one question:
A wooter would say: "Why? Because it's on Woot."
Woot would say: "It's on Woot because 'Why?'."

(Did you have to root your cat, by the way?)

Wondering if this would be a worthwhile stand-in for the ipod touch my 9 yr old son keeps asking for. Certainly a more financially feasible option... and he would finally leave my android phone alone!

Answer: you can run Spotify on this. I assume.

If you can run Spotify, this things becomes much more than just another mp3 player.

I don't even bother loading tunes onto my iPod Touch anymore, I just use it to play Spotify all the time.

One last comment from me on the cat with the built in MP3 player. You know how cats do that slow motion tap dance thing with their front paws, well how cool would that be if kitty played music at the same time? "Singing in the rain, singing in the rain...."

Aiptek made a HD video camera that also played MP3s. It also took stills. No zoom, no AF.

I think that depends enormously on what he wants to do with it.

From the point of view of playing media, I'd say that it is - and certainly so for less than half the price. The fact that the iPod has substantially higher resolution (960x640 vs 480x320) probably won't matter at all to him. The view quality of the iPod is better, but, again, he likely won't care.

From an apps point of view, they're similar. Yes, there are apps on one store that aren't on the other, but for kids especially, I'd say the Android and iOS app selection is comparable. Not identical, but a wealth of options in both.

However, it lacks the front and rear cameras of the iPod, and I know that what my daughter uses the most are those - to take pictures and HD movies, to video chat with her grandparents, and so on.

I have no idea if it's worth $100+ to you or your son, but I do know that the fact my daughters (the older has a hand-me-down iPhone) video chat with my parents all the time makes them all really happy, and it's nice to get pics at work that they've sent after getting home from school.

Edit: also, the touch uses 802.11 b/g/n, whereas this uses 802.11b/g, meaning this can slow things down in some cases if everything else is running 802.11n but your wifi has to accommodate this at 802.11g speeds (not true of all routers, but certainly true of some).
