iPad charger is 10w, which is 5V and 2amps, 4 times more powerful than this thing. So no, it will not charge iPad or anything that requires more than half an amp.

for those of us without electrical engineering degrees... assuming the proper connection is used, is this safe for charging any cellphone and usb device?

Anyone know how long will it hold a charge, and how long does it take to charge an iPhone 4 assuming the iPhone is turned off while charging.

Could you buy two of these, hook them together and let them charge themselves back and forth indefinitely?

ibexris

quality posts: 0 Private Messages ibexris

For those who ask 500mA isn't enough to charge an iPad. It's probably not even enough for an iPhone 4s.

NO, this will NOT work with an iPad. I own one of these, and it DOES work with all phones that I've tested, and an Ipod Touch.

Just a heads up, while this is handy, the battery isn't very big. 1150 mAh is about enough to charge a typical smartphone (iPhone, HTCs, Samsungs)from 0 to about 75% charged.

I have used this to charge my Samsung Intercept phone and a sansa fuze clip.

The chargers work as advertised. If you are going hiking, or going to be somewhere that charging you phone will be a hassle, Its a nice unit.

The chargers themselves charge pretty quickly, about a couple of hours if its drained, and it charged my phone in about 20ish mins. I could have used the phone in about five or so...

Good price for what it is...

Highly recommend to anyone who is out and about AND a phone power user. I work full time and go to school at night, so I'm using my phone to read articles during my commutes and checking email for my side business throughout the day. A battery like this is the only way to survive through to my trip home in the evenings. *Edit to add: I do NOT own this exact model, just a similar device.

Aw, was hoping it was the twofer from last month again. Larger model than this, too...

Assuming some constants between the two models:

> i* devices and most smartphones will not charge off this, some may be able to run off it but not charge further. If the phone is off entirely it may charge.

> USB speakers (like the HP usb minis) should work on this, though if there is a sudden silence in the song the usb power supply may enter a glitched state where it has to be unplugged and replugged for the speakers to work again.

> Some devices (sony usb recorder) may only power themselves off it while giving the appearance of charging. Unknown cause. Think it's due to the boost converter only kicking in when drain is detected.

> Good for about one full charge of a phone or kindle (or two hours charging).

> Battery indicator is poorly, at best.

> Any included USB cables are power only; do not expect them to work for data.

> Yes, you can plug them into each other. Unfortunately does not result in infinite power.

> Charge holding: battery tech is long duration. In this application? Unknown. Likely 6 months reliably (ie, with usable charge left).

These are great for old school mp3 players - ie, the ones without a touch screen and lcd big enough to off of.

Don't count on them to work with your smartphone.

EDIT: Looks like this one uses a switch instead of detecting drain; it will probably not glitch with speakers and some devices the 1800ma unit does glitch on.

Just a heads up, this will not work with ALL Blackberry phones. I have a Torch 9800, which has a micro USB. So if you have a Blackberry and are wanting to use this, make sure you have a mini USB port.
