oredith wrote:fyi, video on a DSLR is nothing like what you are used to with video from Point and shoot/camera phone/handicam/etc.

only a few DSLR has autofocus capability for video. with the canon, you have to manually focus the video. so unless you're very good at operating the focus, good luck on anything fast moving.

I was going to point out the same thing. Most people think that a DSLR with video is a do all item, but it is like saying your phone eliminates the necessity if a better camera or video camera. They do both, too! The lack of auto focus on most of the reasonably priced DSLR's ruins the video capability for most buyers.

PC Connection Express, about 2-3 weeks ago. Found the deal through deals.woot or dealnews.com, I don't remember which. It didn't last too long at that price, but I was really happy I got in.

That isn't a bad thing... Nikon has a better flash system than Canon so as you expand your equipment to include flashes, you will be thankful your stuck with Nikon.

Damn, thanks for the tip. I'm in the market for exactly that (a t2i kit), and was thinking of picking this up instead, but if there are deals like the one you got floating around out there... I may have to pass on this.

That depends - are you just going to put it in auto mode and fire away? If so and you're just looking for something cheap, this should do the trick with the addition of a longer zoom lens (although don't expect pristine pictures in auto). If you're going to make the financial investment and are going to put some time into learning how to use it, I'd probably suggest something a bit better. The newer T2i/T3i (or even 60D, which I own) have a newer sensor which has better high ISO (low light) image quality. On the Nikon side, I've heard great things about the D3100 (or D7000 if you're willing to spend more).

+1 to you for not being a "Canon great, Nikon Sux" or "Nikon great, Canon sux" person. For the vast majority, there's no great difference between the two. I happen to be a Canon guy because my dad bought me Canon equipment when I was 13 (now 40, ugh) and once I started expanding my lens collection, I just decided that I'd stick with Canon.

Look on the sidelines at sporting events - pretty even distribution between Canon & Nikon among the serious photogs. Any one of us will do just fine with either one.

Surprised that few wooters mentioned the lol ad copy, lots of comments about the wootiness of the deal as expected.

Also, I was thinking an 18-55mm lens would be great for close-up (macro) photography, until I noticed that the camera has the smaller APS-C sensor, which makes the lens effectively a 28-90mm one.

This is a horrible deal, but you can always rely on the suckers on woot to buy this. If it were the XSi, I would think its worth $300 max, but it is not.

You can get a demo D5100 for $550 shipped right now and the T2i refurb for $380 at times, which are 5 years newer in tech than this thing.

t2i refurb for $380? where to get? a beginning here looking for a cheap one to start. btw, refurb is big different to the new one. thx
