Seems like a good WOOT deal! If I hadn't just bought a small Pentax I'd be in. Still might.

In any case Steve's Digicams has a great review and all the specs including sample pics. If Steve says it's OK it's good enough for me.

You must be looking at the M22. This model (M583) is $125.99 on Amazon right now.

I'm glad to see that it comes with a rechargeable battery, but curious about the fact that no AC adapter is mentioned. Does this thing get charged up by plugging the USB cable into your computer or something?

I hope that's not the only charging method.

Hey Y'all! It's not been addressed, but this has a f/3.3–f/5.8 lens that, at its 35 mm equivalent, works out to 28–224 mm. Meaning it works as a wide-telephoto zoom, so it's not a bad pocket shooter. The f/5.8 is the only disadvantage on the lens side — when zoomed in, it won't be so bueno for low light.

Kodak is in Chapter 11, not the brink of extinction. And those of us who live in Rochester, where Kodak used to be THE place to work sorta hope it dies. It's like watching your parents get Alzheimer's.

You don't need support for a $69 camera. Push the button to take pictures. If it stops working, throw it away.

OK, I'll splain it for you. It's new (Woot deals a lot in refurbs) It's a camera (Woot sells mostly Roombas) and it's from Kodak (name brand, unlike the SD card yesterday).

I think their confusion was because Woot offers cameras a lot. Far more than Roombas.

Last week's Woot-Off had 15 different camera offers. (Counting the 2 webcams.)

Because of these bankruptcy and restructuring issues don't plan on using the online features or taking advantage of any warranty or support from Kodak's end if you buy this. You will be on your own.

Kodak has always been good to me, even the cheap ones are good.

Micro cards are becoming the standard for small point and shoots so don't be worried to buy one, plus adaptors make them useful.

Would get this if I didn't already have my dual screen samsung from woot.

I've been waiting for a sub-$100 camera. This one should do just fine. I checked out the battery situation at Amazon and found TONS of them. LOL won't need to worry about that at least, got 2 of these
Maximalpower replacement batteries!

While there I also picked up:

Smart Universal Battery Charger with USB Output and Car Charger

SanDisk 32GB microSDHC Flash Memory Card

Hard Case for Kodak EasyShare Digital Cameras

And I was able to find all of them with the Super Saver free Shipping. That just makes it even better! :D

http://bottomline.msnbc.msn.com/_news/2012/02/27/10520431-bankrupt-kodak-asks-court-to-let-it-slash-retirees-health-benefits

Kodak said it wants to discontinue benefits under Kodak's medical plan for all retirees 65 and over and any who are under 65 but are eligible for Medicare.

People need to know the whole story. Would you rather the company go completely bankrupt and everyone lose their jobs? Kodak built the first prototype digital camera in 1975. They hold many of the cellphone digital camera patents right now. Their biggest error was sticking with the film format too long and not switching earlier. It's unfair to compare them unless you consider price point. Kodaks main point was to make an affordable camera that was easy to use. I have a Kodak playsport video camera, that takes excellent 1080p video and decent stills in outdoor light. My 5 and 6 year old can use it, its shock proof and waterproof, battery lasts a long time and it cost $150 at the time (now you can get it dirt cheap). You don't see the government bailing them out like they did the car companies- when that is the case you do what you have to do to survive.

That's what happens when you go into bankruptcy, if the money isn't there (unlike the federal gov't, which just prints more money, which devalues the dollar). Also I suppose you don't fly anymore, because most of the airlines either reduced benefits or got the federal gov't to take it over the retirement plan (which would cut the benefits in half).

BTW, Nice camera....

As already mentioned, extra batteries are CHEAP to acquire. Personally I used a Canon with AA batteries for a long time (still dive with it) because I liked the option of rechargeable NiMH batteries, yet able to buy AA batteries anywhere in the world if you had a sudden failure while on a vacation.
However, recently bought a Canon with Li-on battery for my wife and am constantly AMAZED at how long the battery lasts. Remember most cameras blow thru AA batteries pretty quickly -especially with the flash on.
Bottom line, I believe my next P&S will be re-chargeable Li-on.
As for image quality, as noted, a good photographer will generally take a better picture with a cr@ppy camera than a cr@ppy photographer will take with a good camera (and don't even get me started on phone cameras...)

I used to love Kodak digital cameras. I have a couple myself, and have given them to my kids as gifts over the years. However, I won't buy them anymore, and recommend you avoid them as well.

Without exception, the retractable lens assembly has failed on *EVERY SINGLE KODAK CAMERA* we've owned.

The first time, it happened while the camera was in warranty, so it was serviced and we were happy. It happened again, however, a few months after the warranty expired. The same thing happened with our next Kodak camera, again right after the warranty expired. My daughter has had two--BOTH had the same thing happen. My son had one, too, and--yup: you guessed it--he experienced the same problem. Apart from the first one, each failed shortly after the warranty expired.

In my opinion, save yourself some trouble and buy a different camera. I now own a Nikon.

Good link. In actuality the 583 has a few key advantages: autofocus assist light and macro mode.

This is a great little camera for the price. I like having USB charge-not many cameras give you that option (usually it's just a data port). This way you can just keep you camera docked at your computer and charged at the same time.

Ask your local police or fireman. I would say ask your local teacher but she has retired and is not living in the US anymore. Ha ha.

BTW, FujiFilm is doing fine, so it is not an industry obsolescence issue. Tech workers should ponder their own own futures observing how Kodak workers were treated.

I got my wife one of these recently. Our last Canon point-and-shoot was a dud, always giving us washed-out colors on "auto" and frequently capturing blurry shots of the kids (note -- I have no problem with Canons in general ... my old one was great, and my sister has a newer model point-and-shoot that is stellar).

This camera rules. 8x optical zoom is more than I am used to on point-and-shoots, and it is incredibly handy. The dedicated video button is genius, and I have no idea why all cameras don't have one. "Auto" seems to actually work most of the time (a MUST for my wife and I, who just want to take pics of our kids and don't care to learn fine points of photography).

NOTE TO PARENTS OF LITTLE KIDS -- on the off-chance that the "auto" setting is still getting blurry shots of little guys that won't sit still, there is a "children" preset made for capturing fast-moving kids. It works perfectly!

Are you sure the camera has not been dropped- or something happened (sand or debris in the mechanism). I have had at least 4 digital Kodaks either personally (or given away as gifts) and I have had no issues with the retractable lens. I had that happen to Casio that I bought years ago, but that camera had heavy use (and fairly rough) and lasted 5 years (I can't blame the camera for that).

Define "problem" and "lousy." I find most of these problems go away when the camera is used for normal shots in normal light. Amateurs expect miracles from digital cameras that they did not expect from film cameras with the same specifications. Go figure.

Thanks for the comments! If it wasn't on Amazon, I wouldn't even mention it, as that would be unfair.

But my point is that, over the years, I have dealt with thousands of beginners' questions, and you start to see a pattern.

Right now, it is critical to match the specs of the camera with your needs. And this involves checking the max ISO, the largest aperture and then seeing if this will work for the shots you hope to take.

In a few years, we will laugh at some of what is being offered today (just like all tech stuff!) But for now, we work with what we have...and remember to have fun and take a lot of shots!
