Exactly. That would be 90%, as I stated. Here's some evidence: http://carltonbale.com/1080p-does-matter

That is not what you stated. You stated: "Considering 90% of people can't tell 720p from 1080p". Whether or which, if the difference is VERY obvious to me when I compare the clarity of a Youtube video at 720 and 1080 on my 24" monitor, surely it would also be obvious to more than 10% of a people running the same comparison. Your assertion is not believable.

Considering 90% of statistics are made up on the spot...I just don't think I believe it. The difference is painfully obvious. Change your display settings on your computer to 1280x720, then to 1920x1080 and you will see the huge difference that it is.

This is a good camera for most users.
Price is right though I thought I saw this a bit cheaper not long back here.

Main problem with the camera is short life of battery that gives you a limited out door use and then the price of extra battery is very high. Remeber that this is one those batteries that has internal chips and you can not find the cheapo version by third party, so you should pay close to price of camera just to get one extra short life battery.

Other than battery, you will like this camera in every way at offered price.

not at all what i meant. what im saying is there are many items that woot will/can make out on with $5 flat shipping while still offering a woot worthy price it just seems to not be happening so much

the reason i was drawn into this community was for fun and randomness (so i was told, but it really seems like a best buy clearance aisle lately which is disappointing to me even the fun smiley pan is no more competitive than other prices to be found

granted there are other interesting areas found on this site that i enjoy

presenting you a subliminal message about the awesome that is sausage

We have one at work. Video files are recorded in proprietary format not recognized by some video editing software. I wouldn't recommend this for anybody who does advanced video editing.

Is 720p really HD in today's camera world?

I'd say since tv is still broadcasting in 720p and I don't need to see every pore on the faces of people I film, then yes, 720p is fine for what I use it for. Plus, I'm not sure my computer or my video editing software has the crunch power to reliably handle 1080p video and I'm not willing to spend the $$$ to upgrade them just yet.

This is why I hate mine. I don't have experience in video editing and can't get my files from the Everio to download to a DVD. I tried changing the extension (as seen by some guy on youtube), but this didn't work. It's very frustrating as I'd love to be able to take my daughter's videos and put them on a dvd to easily watch.

You need to download software to convert it into another format. Try download.com (CNET). Quality winds up being reduced when you do this.

It's not proprietary, it's one of the newer compressed formats (which may take hold or may lose the race).

What software are you using for "advanced" editing that doesn't read it? I have Pinnacle 15 and it is just fine. There are also converters out there if needed.

A: it does have a tripod mount. Also we don't typically charge right before we use the camera, but the battery life we have gotten is usually only about 1 1/2 hours.

Bought this last time around. The video quality is very good. The compact easy to use design is nice as well.
However, the battery that comes with it is clearly inadequate. I was able to buy a much larger capacity battery for $89 from B&H and there is another somewhat smaller and cheaper capacity battery available on Amazon. But expect to spend more for an additional battery or be tethered to a power outlet if you want to shoot for more than 20 minutes before recharging.

Dealing with video formats can be a pain unless you've done it a few times. Try some trial software to see if it works before you buy it. Here is a link to one that should work for you:

Correction: 90% of people can't tell 720p from 1080p when viewing from a normal distance away from a TV, such as 6'+ from a 40" to 55" TV. Of course everyone can tell the difference in front of their monitors ...

I've noticed that many lower end camcorders these days use image sensors with exactly the same size and resolution: 1/5.8" and 1.5MP, like the just released Sony HDR-CX190/CX200/CX210 and the older Panasonic HDC-SD40/TM40/SD80/TM80 and JVC's GZ-HM440/HM450, all of which claim to be Full HD camcorders (Yes, I've been doing research on budget camcorders).

Not all pixels on the Sony and Panasonic sensor gets used, as some are used for image stabilization (dual optical+digital) and other stuff. The video effective resolution (straight from the spec sheet) are 1.12~1.3MP for Panasonic and 1.31MP for the Sony. 1.31MP is around 1526 x 858 -- somewhat above 720p but far from 1080p. Yup -- these lower end camcorders upscale a 858p to 1080p (2.07MP) video. Not surprisingly, reviews state those camcorders' video lack detail when viewed up close but are fine at a distance. So the JVC doesn't sound look bad. You get an honest 720p and smaller file sizes.

You'll have to cough up at least $400 (MSRP) for a real 1080p camcorder from Sony/Panasonic.

I totally agree. I went a slightly different route though. I bought the Sony DSC-HX100V superzoom camera. This way I had a decent camcorder that can shoot 1080p at 30 or 60fps, in addition to a 30X superzoom digital camera that has more features than I can mention-this cost me $400. It might not be as good as a standalone $400 camcorder, but the fact that I combined 2 devices into 1, and it has excellent video capabilities that many people probably could not discern from a $400 camcorder, made this the better option. Just another suggestion.

Buyer Beware:
I had a JVC camcorder and it got a condensation error and never could be fixed. JVC will not stand by their product when this happens. I was on a cruise.
It is a piece of junk now.
Do some research on condensation and JVC and you should see others that had the same problem.

This is not a good test, because the LCD panels are defined to display at a native resolution- going outside the spec will make it look a lot worst than it should. If you had a CRT monitor, you could run this test accurately as you described for comparisons sake. Having said that I can tell the difference, but I could believe that other people could not. It's like some people can't tell the difference between an mp3 file and a wav file, and other people can totally hear compression artifact especially at low bitrate. The only way to conclude specific statistics would be to run a double blind crossover study- until then, we just have to accept some people will notice things others don't. For instance, my wife will notice another woman's shoes to the point where she knows the designer after looking at the woman for 3 seconds. I, on the other hand, would have no idea what she is wearing, but could estimate her bra size within 2 inches after that same 3 second interval.
