This should be on the woot off vs the entire 24 hour woot. I wonder how much money the animal knife company spent on having woot sell this stuff. It seems like a low volume, low revenue day for Woot. Not a smashing way to start off sales for the 1st of the month!

Do I have to paint my kitchen purple and listen to native african music or musicals like "the lion king" while using these ?

Seems like a good gift for a High School grad. I have a few people in mind. I do have concerns about the coating though. Seems more like a novelty than a true knife.

Oh they're quite useful indeed. I got these when it was a set of 4 with a stand, and I've actually put my knife block away in favor of these. Between these and the color-coded (food safety/kosher) paring knife set I got for my birthday - and since my ceramic knife broke - these are pretty much the only knives I use in my kitchen anymore.

No, I'm not a chef, but I'm the kid of one and I do get pretty snobby in my kitchen sometimes, keeping things like arugula, mascarpone, and cardamon on hand... so these are actually quite nice - and very easy to clean.

A lil tidbit, occasionally when slicing potatoes in half, the food does seem to stick, but that's more of a suction issue.

Another note, I'm a really lazy dishwasher, and I've let these sit for a day with tomato guts on them, and they get clean as a whistle with one swish in the soapy water, one swipe on each side with your cleaning rag-or-brush-of-choice, and a good rinsing.

And as I've been using these knives nearly exclusively for about a month, I feel it's notable that I haven't experienced any chipping of the coating or of the patterns.

Edit: Someone whined about the handle... even at my mother's house (she is a chef, and has knives that cost what I pay for rent), and even her knife handles slip if my hands are covered with oil.

It's called a towel. Keep one next to your cutting board. Problem solved.

That's obvious.

libertybelle wrote:does the print wear off when you steel the knives? I realize they come from the factory very sharp, you you need to regularly steel them to keep them that way....

or are you guys the 1% that buys new knives when the old ones get dull?

i have not used these knives, but work part time as a butcher (not the kind at the store where they cut meat that comes precut in boxes; the kind where we take a side of beef and break it down).

you do need to use a steel on knives, the edge starts to roll to the side immediately upon use. using a steel rolls that edge back straight. even after using a sharpener (like the kind where you pull it through the V-shaped stones) you need to steel the edge.

i've got wustoff and henkels at home and they did not cut as well as they do now, when they were new.

if you're not going to steel your knives, just buy serated. otherwise your just wasting your money on a good knife (not that these are good knives, i don't know anything about them).

having said all that, you are only running the cutting edge against the steel, and provided the paint doesn't FLAKE off, you wouldn't be rubbing it off by steeling it.

The best knives I have ever used- better than several expensive knives I have purchased. I bought some previously via Woot and am buying these today. Get them- you won't regret it!

I'm trying to make myself not buy these. I do not need them. I just bought Woot! Kuhn knives last month. No. Intervention. Stop.

I do like the knives, but I agree with the handle comments. They are slippery and a bit uncomfortable. I used a tiny paring knife to peel apples for making 3 deep dish apples pies and after all that - you notice.

But the blades are sharp and seem OK strong (remember the price). I do find the pattern a bit distracting, but that zebra print would really look awesome against the inevitable blood spatter. Alas, I digress...

BTW - I'm vegan and I still really like these knives. Those leopard prints are cool. And I'm not into "jersey girl" style at all.

I bought the 4 piece set last time and well, they are cheap both in quality and price.

The steel is pretty thin, which is actually great for the paring knife, but terrible for the chef's knife, which really needs a heavier blade.

The handles are also awful. I read an earlier comment to that effect and thought they couldn't really be that bad, but they are. I don't know if they'll break, but they are cheap plastic, very slick, and not shaped for a good grip.

They're sharp, and you can certainly cut with them, but I haven't used mine enough yet to say how well they'll hold an edge or take an edge, and that's where quality is measured. Every knife should be sharp out of the box.

That said, I like the paring knife, and the utility knife is fine for general purpose use. Basically, this is not your top notch knife set, but it's fine if your just setting up on your own and need something cheap, or as a second set for kicking around. But if this is going to be your only set of knives, you should really go get a separate chef's knife if you're at all serious about cooking.

Oh, and as for the coating, I have no idea what it is, but it seems like it will hold up pretty well. I haven't had them long enough to give it a real test, but it just feels and looks good. At the least they've done a decent job on the coating. On the other hand, I don't see the point of the coating. I've never had that much trouble cleaning a knife, so I don't really know why non-stick on a knife is even necessary. It's definitely about cleaning, not about how they work, because if you're cutting something sticky, it will stick until you wash it. It's not magic, just maybe easier to clean, and I don't notice much difference there because knives just aren't hard to clean. It's not like you're going to burn food chunks onto a knife.

I bought the 4 piece set last month, and I love them. I use them to cut fat from chicken breast, and dice the chicken, cut vegetables, fruit, etc. They're great for me, and those purposes.

snarp

quality posts: 1 Private Messages snarp

Oh, and this is a chef's knife, a mini cleaver, and a utility knife? Don't buy it. The steel is simply too thin and light for a cleaver or a chef's knife. With the 4 piece set it was a paring knife, serrated paring knife, utility knife, and chef's, so there were three knives where the thin steel was a feature or neutral, with these there's one where the thin steel is neutral and two where it's a problem.

whats wrong with wanting to buy american? perhaps they were just mentioning it so we would know their country of origin.

for the record, some of us would like to see american industry grow, not just the pockets of people in import all this crap from china.

curli76 wrote:I bought the last set of four Rikon knives when it was sold on home.woot. They do a decent job of cutting; I'm not picky and they're a definite improvement over some of the Target/dollar store knives I've had. I have a few other smaller Rikon knives that work well. I haven't had a problem with chipping.

The other set came with a large chef's knife, a small chef's knife, and two paring knives. This set is comparable in value--the small chef's knife is useful, but I'd rather have a cleaver than the two paring knives. And I'd definitely rather have the sheaths than the plastic knife block the other set came with. This is a good deal, imo.

I bought the other set as well, which is exactly why I'm buying this set. The chopping knife in the other set is worth it alone.

No advertising pls.

I have quite a few of the Kuhn Rikon knives and really like them now that I've stopped swearing at how well the knives cut my fingers - going from dull knives to sharp knives is quite the shocker.

I like that the knives come in colors and patterns. This way I can use knives that match my undies. Now if I could only get some knives with lace patterns on them .......

Is that unhealthy?

Very cool for novelty's sake, really cute and actually does cut well. I have the pink-handled, black-blades with white polkadots. Just know that the blades are very bendy on the larger knives and the plastic handles leave something to be desired. Great to have in the drawer, but definitely not a primary knife set...just for fun.

They could have used laser etching to create diffractive surfaces, making them reflect light in the desired wavelengths and patterns such that it wouldn't wear off, but that would have made them far more expensive.

Purchased the last set from home.woot and I love them. Despite their...color, the knives handle their job perfectly. They can slice through even the thickest of meats with very little resistance and if you're just doing basic cooking, are perfect.

I ordered the polka dot set with a stand that was offered recently and I love it.

I cook almost everyday and they've become the ones I reach for every time.

I'm not a knife snob, but for the price, these are great knives. In my opinion, just one knife is more than worth the price of the whole set.
