Gas Man wrote:My problem, as eluded to before, I have an Ottercase on my non-insured 4S. Most of these units either won't plug in or if they have the spring loaded plugs... they put too much stress on the connector. I just can't go in unless I knew it fit.

First of all TWSS. Now that thats out of the way.

Otterboxes always present a problem but they sell extenders that I recommend you purchase to avoid the headache of removing the case. Price: $15.73 and all your troubles have disappeared!
RadTech 13-860 ProCable Shortz Dock Extender for iPhone, iPod and iPad - Black

Now buy your extender and then go for three docking stations!!

Yearrrgghhh... if I hadn't bought the dual-dock charger a few months back, I would jump on this (that's what SHE said).

I looked through the manual and didn't see the "line-in" jack for the additional device, and it doesn't show up on the photos.

It's a different kind of HEARTBREAK for me than it is for Jonathan... dear Theresa.

Very eerie. The description has "Jonathan," and my RL name is Jonathan. It is like Amawoot is talking directly to me. I feel like I almost have to buy it.

But I won't, because who needs a docking station without speakers?

The iPad/ipad2, iPhone, iPod are all 5v. The iPad requires 1a of current, whereas the iPhone or iPod require only 500mah of current .

IPad 2 chargers work perfectly fine on an iPad 1 and vice-versa. When I upgraded to an iPad 2 and handed down the iPad to my wife, I didn't even take the charger out of the box. Just alternate charging the two on the iPad 1 charger.

So, where's the audio line-in jack that's mentioned in woot narrative & AR's web site?
I don't see it in & it's not mentioned in the AR manual. Bummer, if it's not on the unit, I just ordered one.

Can anyone think of a reason this wouldn't work with an iPod classic? It's not on the list of compatible devices, but I'm thinking this may just be because most people aren't buying iPod classics anymore? My classic is dying to the point where it needs much more frequent charging, and this may be just the thing to keep me from having to buy a new one for another year or two I hope. IF it's compatible.

In for two. One for me & one for my hubby 'cause I face one of two possibilies:

1) him saying where is mine? And then I'm golden.

or 2.) him saying why did you buy me one, i wont use it? In which case, I have an extra gift for someone's b-day later this year.

I have the same question. If it will work with my iPad2, iPhone 4s, AND iPod Classic, I'm in. I can't imagine it wouldn't work with the classic, since it works with most other iPod models, but I can't find anything that will give me a definite answer.

This made me LOL. Perhaps you should have Checked out "What is woot?" before buying from a website you knew nothing about.

If I may quote my favorite Q&A...
"Will I receive customer support like I'm used to?
No. Well, not really. If you buy something you don't end up liking or you have what marketing people call "buyer's remorse," sell it on eBay. It's likely you'll make money doing this and save everyone a hassle. If the item doesn't work, find out what you're doing wrong. Yes, we know you think the item is bad, but it's probably your fault. Google your problem, or come back to that product discussion in our community and ask other people if they know. Try to call the manufacturer and ask if they know. If you give up and must return it to us, then follow on to the next FAQ entry."

Who doesnt research a return policy before buying something online? Maybe this is a life lesson for ya. Woot gives you a chance at a fantastic deal, it's not their fault you changed your mind.

When I was customer service manager for a big box retailer I had a lady trying to return a shirt that was obviously worn (as shown by the pit stains). She snarled at me, "What happened to the customer is always right?"

I replied, "I'm sorry, ma'am, but all those companies went out of business."

Take some responsibility for yourself and your money and read the return policy before purchasing.

Did a little sleuthing re: iPod Classic.

Apple's online chat friend, Brittani W, tells me she "can't say that it will work with an iPod Classic" and to "verify with Amazon or the manufacturer."

Acoustic Research's website yields an Owner's Manual with the same compatibility information as the Woot listing.

All in all, seems like a good price for a nice little piece of equipment. If it charged my iPod Classic, I'd be in for at least one, if not more. As it stands, I have a set of $10 computer speakers from Target that work just fine until I can convince myself to buy a nicer iHome dock.

Go ahead and buy the stuff you want but don't need and once you have enough stuff seal it up and send it to yourself after a wootoff and pretend like you just won achieved immortality and have it show up on your porch. Question - under compatible devices you don't list the iPhone 4s 64GB (or any 4s). You also don't list the iPod Video 60GB (or any iPod Video). I gave my daughters my older iPads/iPods, so want to make sure the Video iPod works with this dock (I figure it would, as would my iPhone 4s 64GB, but had to ask since you have an extensive list but excluded these models and the dock will be for my 6yo daughter who has my iPod Video).

Actually, that particular rumor regards the next iPhone. The iPad 3 is widely expected to have a 30-pin connector. The leaked back casing photos clearly show it. So, it looks likely this will work with the upcoming iPad.

A few points for the sake of clearing up some fog:

1. It does indeed have a "line-in" (despite no detail of this on the posted PDF manual).
I called AR to confirm and they assured me (by actually product in hand) that it does have a single 3.5mm line-in for auxiliary input.

Edit: Woot, I noticed the correction on your post and was confused since I spoke with an agent at AR this morning who ASSURED me that they had the product in hand and that it did have a line-in jack and that I could make note of this with absolute confidence.

Well, I just called again seeking clarity once more, and as stated in the post now, the device does NOT have a line-in. I spoke with another agent and they sincerely apologized for the confusion.

2. Regarding compatibility--for those models specifically stated as compatible you need not worry about the amperage draw of your device vs. the output of this unit. Basic power principle: As long as the VOLTAGE rating is consistent (+/-5%) with the required value of the input device--in this case 5 volts, and the input requirement of your device does not exceed the output capability of the charger it WILL NOT matter not how much amperage the charger is spec'd for.

iPhone supplied chargers are typically 1 amp (5 watt) output.

iPad supplied chargers is 2.3 amp (approx. 10 watt) output.

The ARS13 charger is spec'd at 5 Volts and 3 AMPS. Thus it will fine for charging the items listed as compatible--regardless of what the amperage input requirement is on your device because the 3 amp output exceeds the requirement of these device.

For worriers: The device being charged only draws the current it requires. It's not a 'push' dynamic, rather, your device will 'pull' what it needs.

Some may ask: "well, then how come I can charge my iPad with my iPhone charger..?"

Answer: Because they are both approx. 5V chargers and won't cause harm. BUT, because the iPhone charger outputs a max. 1 amp the iPad will take longer to charge when using an iPhone charger since it's input requirement exceeds the output capacity of the charger.

And..no, the converse is not true. Your iPhone will not charge faster if you 'give it more juice' with an iPad charger that outputs 2.3 amps because, again, your device will only DRAW the maximum input amperage it is stated as spec'd for.

3. Personally for me, the deal breaker here is that this device does not have a LINE-OUT. Yes, the speakers on this device are certainly going to yield a 'better' sound vs. the onboard speakers of any iXxx device. But I'm looking for a single drop in dock device that charges and links to my stereo system (amp+full size speakers) via 3.5mm jack to RCA Audio jack inputs (or higher level digital format if possible).

Yes, I can connect to stereo via the onboard 3.5mm jack. But I'm seeking a multi-function drop in cradle that has an on board output which I would leave permanently connected near the stereo system. Otherwise it requires that I plug in the 3.5mm cable just as I do now--in which case it will serve as a charging device which I don't need.

If #3 isn't a concern for you, it looks like a fine unit at a good price.

I got an iHome dock at Christmas that has this same design. It is perfect for a multi-device family. We have an iPad, iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4S and 3 iPods, all in various cases. The dock works for all of them since the connector swivels just a bit and there is a support to lean against. I don't have the AR unit, but looks to be the same design. If it had a remote, I would be all over it. Does show line-in capability on the AR web site. http://www.acoustic-research.com/dockingstations/?sku=ARS13

Ok, I emailed early this morning asking if someone at HQ could put their hands on this thing and find the Line-In. Uhm, guess what? They couldn't.

The sale has been corrected.

The photo appears to show an iPad sitting on it in landscape mode. But it looks like the design of the product is for the device to plug in at the "bottom". An iPad in landscape has the port on the side. Will it work portrait or landscape?

Without going through the 7 pages of comments... The problem I have with most docks like this is that they only dock 'portrait'. When I watch my Netflix, I have it 'landscape' (sideways for those from Little Rock Arkansas ... Just kidding!!).

But anyway yea, I rarely use my iPad 2 'standing up'. Oh well...
